Just wondering the going rate for shoes these days. I pay $190 for all 4. (I live in VA.) I wasn't sure if this was in line with the rest of the farriers in the area or not.

I have a GREAT farrier here in MD, he's from VA
I pay $100 for a set of four, $70 for fronts only. $125 for my reining mare who gets shoes and special pads as well as sliders. My farrier is fabulous, shoes stay on, he's taken NQR horses and made them sound, works well and quickly. I love love love him.

I already thought my farrier was the bomb, but I like him even better now!
$60 for fronts ($50 for reset) for my TB. $20 to trim my barefoot pony and I believe $120 all the way around. (I don't have a horse that is shod all the way around.)

about $20 for a trim and about $50 for front shoes. I say 'about' because I think he makes it up each time. I think one time I only had two twenties on me (I thought the $1 was a $10) and he took that....another time I made a joke that I only had $5 in my wallet and he seriously said he would take that if money was tight and that's all I had.....best farrier ever! (he knows his job well enough to be invited to fly down south when the racehorses go south for the winter).

With my horse it varies depending upon what he needs, so $150 - 200.
Love my farrier. He is extremely fussy and he and the vet have worked together to do wonders with my horse's problems. Horse is currently in eggbars with clips and pour-in pads in front and rim pads (for snow) behind.
I am usually not there when the farrier comes ( he likes to come midday when I am at work ) so I literally leave him a blank check and tell him to do what he thinks best!

I pay $100 for fronts only. Others at the barn have all four shod which is $200. Farrier is wonderful, I've never seen a farrier really get angles right the way this guy does. Also, the shoes stay on!!! (I'm going to knock on some wood now!!!)

I pay $35 each to have mine trimmed but I have 6 to do. Not sure how much he'd charge if I had less to do. I may have to get front shoes on one tomorrow due to a possible resection and he said it'd be $60 for fronts. All of mine are barefoot thank goodness (I couldn't afford to shoe them all).

I love my farrier!
I pay $95 for a basic shoe all around, $65 for a half shoe, and $20 for a trim
He does a great job and comes right out if my 'problem child' needs special attention (like the time he pulled a shoe in his stall).

Wow, I love my farrier now!
$100 for shoes all around, $120 for four shoes and stud holes.
My OTTB also gets clips on the front. The Pony gets clips on all four.
My farrier is also really nice and took the time to show me how to take off a shoe when I needed to know it for Pony Club. And he would drill me on the tools when I sat down at the barn to watch.

The one good thing about the economy right now is that there are a bunch of decent farriers here willing to cut their prices to get more business. I just started using a new farrier...he is charging me $20 for a trim and $40 for front shoes. With 4 OTTBs right now, I am very thankful for the price break!

Our farrier charges $90 for four, $65 for fronts, and $35 for a trim. Cold shoeing, does a good job, handles the horses very well. I don't think he's ever asked for one to be sedated, and we have a few that weren't very good for other farriers but behave beautifully for him.

Using the best farrier in the area, for 10 yrs- 105.00 new shoes on all 4. 95.00 for resets.
In all of the years he's done shoes for our barn, never had a hot nail, and he's only forgotten about an appt w/me once. He's always on time, good with the horses, and usually out w/in a day, if a horse pulls a shoe and replaces it at no charge. I love my farrier!!!

$60 for a trim and new fronts, $55 for a trim and reset fronts, and our farrier is marvelous. I believe he charges depending on how much of a handful the horse is, and I am very grateful that my OTTB is a model citizen because I'm pretty sure our rate is the lowest. :D

I wouldn't own horses if I had to pay the prices you folks do.
Mine four horses are all barefoot and I trim them myself.
I have the farrier out once a year to make sure I'm keeping them trimmed proper. Farrier charges $40 to trim and $70 to shoe all 4 with keg shoes.

I think my farrier charges $25 for a trim and then $100 (even when re-setting) for shoes on all four. I'm not sure what he charges for shoes just up front. My guy now has plates up front and eggbars with clips in back (farrier did cold shoeing up front and hot shoeing in back for the eggbars the last time) due to some suspensory problems and it's still just $100...love my farrier!

$100 4 steel
$110 alum front steel hind
$120 4 steel with rim or full pads
$120 with stud holes add another $20 with pads
$150 for hot 4 steel
$100 racing plates
$110 no vibe racing plates
$70 alum fronts
$60 steel fronts
$25 trims
We have a barn full, so usually the farrier is here once a week all day. So I thnk we get better rates than a small private barn.

Just wondering the going rate for shoes these days. I pay $190 for all 4. (I live in VA.) I wasn't sure if this was in line with the rest of the farriers in the area or not.
Trim: 25
Front shoes: 50
4 shoes: 75........keg shoes he does heat in a forge if needed to get the right fit.
Extra 40 for the one mare that occasionally needs her foot puttied if the shoe does come off and breaks up (the one noted below)
He does a very good job
He is bad about returning phone calls if it is not an emergency but in an emergency (lost shoe the day before a show or the one with a poor quality hoof from a coronary band injury that goes to pot as soon as the shoe falls off) he is there pronto no matter how busy he is at no extra charge.
He is fairly new to shoeing (only been doing it for about 3 years/was previously a horse owning truck driver) but he apprenticed with the really expensive other local farrier group and still shoes for them one day a week since on of the big race barns he worked for while an apprentice there really liked him...so he works for The Pricey Farrier Practice 1 day a week and on his own 4 days a week. Since he is good and (relatively) cheap word had gotten around pretty quickly and he has built up a good sized following. Since we were one of his first clients when he got started (our former farrier moved out of the area when he was starting up and we gave him a try) he has been super about keeping us a priority client if we need something.
He could charge a lot more around here....but his theory is that as a horse owner he could not afford to pay well over a hundred bucks a horse per shoeing. Most of his clients are normal folks with average paying jobs/are not wealthy so he figures he should charge what he could afford to pay as Joe Average. Amazingly the dentist I use has the same theory.
When our young un went to the local trainer who uses the Other Farrier the mare needed to be reshod while at the trainers. It was 102.00 for fronts only. I about choked being used to half that!!! Next time we had a kid to go to the same trainer I made sure he went freshly shod right before he left~~

I love my farrier. $85 for steel all the way around, $100 when I switch to aluminum up front for the show season. He is absolutely phenomenal about getting the angles right on the feet and getting hoof to grow in the direction he wants in in accordance to the conformation of the foot. Recently did x-rays to double check that everything was lining up and the vet didn't think anything should get changed. I'm the only one at my barn, and there's only one other barn on the Peninsula that he does... so I'm totally lucky! He's a retired military type who shoes horses for fun; apprenticed under an older than dirt farrier so he knows his stuff but keeps up with and understands current trends and technology improvements.

When Tiger Lily was getting shod, it was $250/all four. Now that she's a barefoot convert, lol, I pay $90 bucks a trim. (Which is understandable, since the trimmer comes up from Florida every 5 weeks. I live in Massachusetts.)

Bangs head on desk...but he's worth it.
My wonderful farrier who actually keeps shoes on my horse is $245. That's for four shoes, side clips, squared toes and rim pads on his fronts. Borium is $300. Luckily he bills!
He travels more than two hours from NH to me. I'm the only one in the area he does.
He's wonderful and a good farrier is worth their weight in gold!

Thanks for all the responses! It surprises me that price are so varied. Although, I guess it shouldn't.
I do love my farrier. He is the only one I have ever had place shoes on my horse, so I was clueless. On the other hand, he could charge me whatever and I think I would still pay it since he is so great.

85 for four (cold shod keg shoes no clips)
70 for fronts only (same as above)
40 for a trim
Love love love my farrier. He lives in a fairly cheap part of the state and I'm on his loop for when he heads way south and works his way back home.
Some of you guys are paying more b/c of the cost of living in your area. Example, property taxes on my 32 acres and 1800 sf house is way less than
2K a year. Move one county over and I don't even WANT to know what I'd pay.

150 for reset I think. And 195 for new shoes with borium.
75 for fronts (reset I think?)
Only my family's hunters get shoes. I try to keep mine barefoot as much as possible because there is no way I could afford to keep them shod all the time. I have a little extra $$ and I like to use that for fun stuff like shows if I can.

$110 for steel, $140 for aluminum fronts. I forget what I pay for drill and tap, but I think it's around $200. Considering where I live, my shoer is a bargain.

I pay $125.00 for four steel shoes with clips. $35.00 for a trim. I live in Southern California and my horse is a jumper. I have used the same farrier for over 12 years. He will come to any barn I am at and even to my house when the horses are at home. I pay him extra for gas and travel time when he has to travel out of his way to accomodate me. I do not know what I would do if he retired from shoeing. I tell trainers up front that I have my own farrier and vet.

Nothing. I do my own. Back when my farrier told me to learn now. It's really not that hard, and is something everyone should learn to do. Then I discovered my horses are sound and don't need shoes and stopped putting them on. I trim them, everyone's barefoot, everyone's sound.
And my horses have done everything. I compete through Grand Prix on barefoot horses, all over the place on all kinds of trails and hills, jump, walk on cement, rocks, no problem.
Lucky for me. I am not so rich like a lot of people around here who ride, and couldn't afford it!

My farrier charges $125 for 4 shoes, new or reset.
The farrier we use at work charges $45 for 4 trims, I'm not sure about shoes since they are all barefoot.
Another local farrier charges $85 I think for 4 shoes, but doesn't do a very good job...
And yet another charges $235 for 4 shoes, and IMO doesn't do any better than the farrier I use.

I have my foals, weanlings & yearlings checked and trimmed (nothing drastic, touch-ups for handling/training purposes primarily) every 2 weeks, $15.00 each. If there ever is a potential problem he catches and addresses it immediately.
My farrier is fantastic. He has the patience of a saint. We have NO issues with foals behaving badly on this farm. Some unknown farrier down the road will thank us!!
