Well, we had our first casualty with the weekend's snowstorm.. my boys' run in

They live out but I am fine with that, temporary loss. And my boys are blanketed well.. but now we're looking at 16" more (on top of 24"). No place to put them that does have shelter.

Do you change your blanket routine in a situation like this? Blanket heavier? They likely won't use the treeline for windbreak since it's further out in the field. I expect they'll huddle around the roundbale and waste energy arguing over who gets the best snacking spot .

I'd perhaps throw a neck rug on them, but otherwise they should be fine for the time being, especially if they do have trees to huddle under if they so choose.

I would probably throw a waterproof sheet over their turnout blankets if I had a spare one--that way the blankets don't get icy and take forever to thaw/ dry. I wouldn't worry about adding layers for warmth beyond what you'd use anyway.

This is what I do - works beautifully without adding too much extra bulk or unnecessary warmth.
