View Full Version : what's in your semen tanks?

That you want to sell? Do you have a dose of this or that that you have decided to sell. I am just getting into this frozen breeding thing and am looking for various stallions to have on hand. I particularly am interested in dressage and jumpers but others here may also be interested, so telling me about hunters is OK too, for others to see.
Thanks

Good topic! I just bought a new tank, and now the temptation to fill it is looming. LOLOLOL!!!

Residents include
Parco
Lingh
Sancho
Goodtimes
Rhodium
Furstenreich
Van Gogh v. Numero Uno
Ruiz Soler

Licotus is on order.

Only challenge I can see is shipping, unless you or the person you are buying from has a vapor shipper.
ETA or you find one to rent/borrow. :)

Would really love to add
As di Villagana
Jupiter

Several of the VDL stallions and more and more.... I just need to get braver about using the stuff!

I'm fortunate to have a repro-vet who stores mine for me. I actually have "extra" doses now that I'm looking to re-home, from dressage sires Hotline (Hofrat/DeNiro), San Rubin (Sandro Hit/Rubinstein) and Rosario (Rubinstein / Castro) All good semen - and all sires who make great babies, with the right mare.

This is a bit of a spinoff - but why does it cost so, so, so much to ship frozen semen?

This is a bit of a spinoff - but why does it cost so, so, so much to ship frozen semen?

I wasn't aware that it does!

I rented a dry shipper for $50. Had it Fed Ex ground shipped to the vet that was storing the semen (west coast about $50) and then shipped from the West Coast overnite to my vet (around $100). So I gues I don't think $200 is so,so, so much $$. I bred to a stallion last year that the collection fee was more than that:eek:

Contender frozen??? Is it any better than it was 10 years ago? I tried FIVE (chiching chiching chiching - get the picture?) times with frozen Contender w/o success. I would have been better off shipping the mare back to germany to breed than those 5 wasted cycles. Her mother was a full sister to Cassini I - I wish I had bred to someone else and gotten a foal from her! Of course I didn't - sold the mare for next to nothing and moved on...I'll admit there were times I was didn't know what I had or what I was doing in thoses days... At the time, although the semen looked good, it was hard to get a pregnancy from frozen Contender.

This is a bit of a spinoff - but why does it cost so, so, so much to ship frozen semen?

It is reasonable IF you plan ahead. The dry shipper tanks weigh about 30 pounds, so if you need it overnight or the vet you use doesn't have a nitrogen tank (I'm always suspect of anyone that claims to do frozen semen, but doesn't even have a nitrogen storage tank <sigh>) it means you're going to pay a premium for that. Or if you order in the height of breeding season, chances are the tank will be need to be over nighted to you and over nighted back. The tanks are EXPENSIVE!!! So most shipping facilities will have a limited number of them on hand. Plan ahead! Right now, we ship out frozen semen a few times a week. But, during the height of the breeding season, as soon as a tank comes in, it gets charged and goes right back out and we need them back for the next breeder to be able to get semen in time! I figure that even with everything going correctly, I expect a one week turnaround when I ship out frozen semen. At $1200 a tank, I expect it to take at least 2 years to recoup our investment on a tank. And, if the tank is damaged, well...there goes our investment <rolling eyes>. The advantage is that you can have multiple doses shipped at once, so the cost can be deferred out over several insemination doses. The ultimate costs is usually less than if you are ordering fresh cooled semen AND with the added advantage that it can be sitting there in the tank ready to use when your mare is ready to breed. No worries on whether or not the semen will be lost, the stallion doesn't collect, it's a Sunday and you can't get semen, etc. :D But the take home message is to order early so that the shipment can come by ground...

Oh and edited to add, we've got too many to list here <LOL>....but mostly domestic boys :D

Hope that helps!

Thanks Kathy! I have semen stored at a clinic in CA from last year (my mare out there didnt catch on frozen and we switched to fresh), and it needs to go to VA for a mare there - it's only one dose though, so if the mare doesnt catch the first time, I need to get more shipped from Foxfire. . .

So, if I rent a dry shipper, does it come charged? and how long does the charge hold? and if it comes charged, can you open it to put the straws in and close it, and its still good to go? or do you recharge it each time you open it. . .

Thanks for any help - I always appreciate your posts on COTH.

Best,
Dina

So, if I rent a dry shipper, does it come charged?

Depends on who is renting it to you. Some will have a flat rental fee that will include charging. Others will send you the tank and it will be your responsibility to charge it.

and how long does the charge hold?

Depends on the tank. The dry shippers we use have a hold time of around 14 days, depending on exactly which tank it is.

and if it comes charged, can you open it to put the straws in and close it, and its still good to go?

Yup.

or do you recharge it each time you open it. . .

Depends on how long it's been since it was last charged. If the charge time gets down on it, you should add nitrogen. We typically will top off a tank that comes in and let it sit overnight before shipping it out just to cover ourselves. Nothing worse than thawed semen arriving.

Definitely NOT for sale...
One dose Gonzo I
One dose Zeus...still heartsick that we got our premium Gonzo I mare in foal last year and she foaled a GORGEOUS colt with four high whites, tiny face, belly spot and huge blaze...only with an 8 inch where his gut didn't close and a bunch of his intestines on the outside...I still wonder what he'd be like if he'd made it....sigh...I think I'm going to save that dose for a knockout Palladio filly with a nice quiet Palladio brain that I have here that is out of a champion hunter mare. Wish there was tons more of that around!

Have Palladio frozen put up just for safety....

My wish list...Wouldn't mind getting Voltaire and Raphael to play with....
