I had a feeling this was going to happen, thank God I didn't sleep through it--I have been so sleep deprived. My poor mare Lauren has been HUGE and keeping me on foal watch for the past two weeks (making me totally miss Decoupages foaling!) I swear if your mare is BIG and looks like she's going to foal every night for days on end be ready for twins. This is the third set I've had born here over the years and it was the same scenario each time.
I have two lovely colts by Blonder Hans born between 2:30 and 3:00 am this morning, one is a bay the other smaller/weaker one a buckskin. They are both well conformed, pretty good size and can get up on their own. I am worried about the buckskin so jingles that we will beat the odds and have two healthy babies. Will keep you all updated!

So far so good, they have both nursed, though the buckskin or maybe he's a smokey black--can't tell haven't had any of either before is having a harder time. He will probably have to be tubed. Vet due here any minute to check IGG levels. Here is a photo of my boys...

hey Liz - congratulations. Himalaya's dam - the late Party Doll had full term twins before he was born. Both about the same difference in size as yours (one filly, one colt) They both survived and went to be 16H+. Though the mare ended up with a HUGE udder after that and we always laughed that the three foals produced after that were all HUGE boys!! Including Himalaya (by your Art Deco) and his full brother Kilimanjaro who was 11.3H at birth!

Well, as far as I know he made it through the night--no news is good news right? His prognosis at Marion DuPont seems pretty good, though they didn't make any promises and these little guy can have big problems FAST. He went down hill so quickly yesterday, from being able to stand nurse, nicker and sort of running around the stall to being unable to move and being practically comatose. His mother and brother are here at home and doing well though we did have some scares with them as well and are still keeping close watch on them. If the coltie pulls through he has a good chance of being totally "normal" and healthy, if this had not been the case I would have made the choice to put him down. His hocks (which they x-rayed to see how "mature" they where) are fully developed, if they had not been his prognosis would have been poor.
We have nick named the little fellow "Pooh" for Winne the Pooh, since is mothers nick name is "Tigger" and his brother is "Piglet" (very fitting, since he pigged up the placenta and is a milk hog)
A cute side note, everyone at the horse hospital was oohing and ahhhing over his coloring, he is cute as a button and looks like a stuffed toy.

No matter how this turns out I really want to thank some SUPER friends, horsemen and of course all of you for your good thoughts and jingles.
Lauren Dearlove, whom many probably know in this area--she's an excellent handler, horsewoman, breeder, etc. Is the owner of "Tigger" and she and her family have been a tremendous help. Yesterday after Lauren had what I'm sure is a long hard day showing at Morven park breed show, came zooming right over here and took over, which I REALLY needed, I was dead at that point. Not only did she help out tremendously but did it with a smile on her face. Then both she and her father trailered the little guy over to the hospital for me, Lauren stayed in the back with the foal and let me take a break up front! We didn't get back here until way after 11PM and Lauren is off at the show again today. There are so few people nowadays that are SO generous of time, energy and spirit. I also want to thank Helen my "barn girl" she too was off at the show helping some other clients and came over several times yesterday to help and then spent the night to help me monitor Tigger and Piglet, she too had to wake at dawn to return to the show. There where/are many others who help out through at the past few days, too many to mention. I really love these guys--they are so great THANKS!!!!!!!!! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Well, no news on either as of this morning. We arrived with Piglet and tigger yesterday evening, they immediately put them in isolation, which is freaking me out. They are very concerned about somesort of contagious something or other because of the diarrhea. Now yesterday I was swapping stalls, messing with Piglet and Tigger messing with my other horses!!! They told us to totally strip down the trailer, and bleach out/disifect everything in it and at the farm. The trailer we took care of but everything else...well a little too late, I wish I was thinking more clearly yesterday, I would have been more careful. At first they wanted us to bring Tigger home--I said NO WAY, I am not separating this mare from another foal, so they did take her too.
I wish I had better news but of yet I don't. The only good news is I did sleep last night actually it was more like a coma...ahhhh it was good, two or three more nights like that and I might feel semi normal again.
Will call hospital in a few, hopefully will get to talk to someone who will tell me something, usually that's not the case http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/sigh.gif

Liz - get one of those bottles that hooks on a hose for putting fertilizer around the grass, plants, etc. Put bleach in it and just cover all the surfaces in your barn. It will come out in a nice mist. We've done this just as a general cleaning and it works great and is fast and easy to do. Plus you don't have to haul buckets, brushes, etc.
Esprit
Jun. 6, 2003, 04:55 AM
Liz it might not be too late to disinfect the barn - with a pressure washer you could hose it down with bleach and a blast from the washer in no time. Your horses at home will have a higher tolerance (more developed immune system) so it's not too late. Good thing that you got some much needed sleep even though you need more of it I'm sure.
Hang in there the best you can, knowing that you've done absolutely everything you can - it's now in the hospital's and fates hands.
We're all still jingling and praying - that won't stop. All the very best.

OK the latest is good news on Piglet he is doing great and is pissed he can't nurse (no surprise--he is a piglet after all) He will have to stay in the hospital at lest over the weekend.
Pooh on the other hand is not doing well, I think I may have him put down. On top of everything else he is now septic which will up the already astronomical bill to twice the estimate, I just don't think I can financially swing keeping him going (I am going to throw in a shameless plug, I'm desperate...moderators can remove if they want.) I have drastically dropped stud fee prices on my website to help generate funds fast for this hospital bill. Liz, if he's at a research/teaching university, you may be able to sign him over to them and avoid putting him down. Basically, they take over ownership and medical decisions and take the case over as a teaching case. If the foal lives, he would be put up for adoption (there is generally a waiting list). My sister adopted a foal this way, and now he's a very happy horse!
Best of luck to you.

Jun. 6, 2003, 12:40 PM
Thanks for the suggestions guys...I don't want to do a donation thing, I'd rather give folks a great deal on a stud fee and earn the money for their care, it's a very nice thought, but just doesn't seem right to me to even consider. Also the colt is currently at a university/vet school, that's what Marion DuPont is, but they have a lot of horses donated to them and usually they are used for disecting http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif + right now they are so filled up with horses and foals that I doubt they need any to teach on http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif seems like its a bad year not just for the board/forum but lots of folks. If Pooh truly has a fair to good chance of making it I will do what ever to see he has that chance, but if his diagnosis is fair to poor then I can't see doing it, not just because of the exspense but the poor little guy, how much can one foal take?

Liz, I will email you re your stallions. As you know from my other post our mare lost her baby this morning. We were going to breed her back to our stallion but if there is any way I can swing the finances perhaps we could rebreed to one of your lovely guys instead.
VERY sorry for the trouble you are having. Such tragedy and then the huge bills on top of that...been there, done that. As an aside, I had a full term foal a few years ago that was an odd presentation and very large, had to have the vet pull him out with chains. He looked OK for the first few hours and then went downhill in a hurrry. Was so out of it that we actually picked him up and put him in the back of my Jeep Cherokee and drove off to the local Vet College with him just laying in the back with a blanket on him. He too became septic and despite a huge effort and a huge bill, around 5K as I remember, he did die after about 5 days. It's such a very hard thing but septicaemia in a newborn I think is pretty tough to fight. I feel so badly for you and I guess I have a soft spot for your little buckskin guy since we just lost our little palomino girl...I am new to the dilute breeding so they just seem a little extra special to me!
Best wishes and check your email!

First let me say before this next update the generosity of folks here and in the horse community is simply amazing. I have had offers from complete strangers to come help me on the farm, donate money, etc. As I have said before even if everything goes to hell in a handbag, this whole situation has warmed my heart to know that there are so many kind, generous and helpful people out there. Just as I was getting cynical in my old age, you all have renewed my faith, sometimes bad things happen for good reasons.
OK here is the latest, Pooh is still not making positive progress, I'm going to give him another 24 hours to show some sort of improvement and not go any further down hill. If there are no changes or things get worse--then vets are advising me to put him down and I will follow that advice. We could go to heroic measures, which has also been suggested but I don't think that is fair to the colt, nor can my business afford it. Financially we are well into the $5000 mark with both colts, if Pooh makes a recovery I am looking at over $11,000 which come hell or high water (which we seem to have both right now, with all this rain and the way I feel right now--OK a little cynicism is still lurking) I will swing it somehow, but I could also rackup a bill into the tens of thousands by trying to save a foal that will not make it, so I have to draw the line somewhere and make this painful decision, I think the 24 hour mark is the only way I can do it otherwise I will just keep hoping and hoping and days will go by and the bill will mount and the colt will suffer. I thought that after all these years of breeding I'd be a bit more hardened to these type of things, but I'm not. I hope this is the right way to do it, but I can't think of anything else. I'm sorry I don't have better news, I wish this could turn out as a positive post on this forum, when they where first born I thought maybe it would be, the miracle of healthy twins, but that usually is a true miracle, very rare indeed.

Liz, you are doing the right thing. You have gone far beyond what most are able and willing to do to try to save the life of your dear foals. Jingles and prayers from AZ. We are thinking of you and keeping positive thoughts for Pooh. I hope the next 24 hours brings better news but I will add my opinion that you have to draw a line and you are doing the right thing. I have been in this or at least a similar situation. It is tough. I think most of us on this board have gone through a loss and know how much it hurts and how hard you have tried to make this work. As to being hardned after all the years of breeding...NO, I think it hurts just as much each time. Each time we try our best and hope for the best and then do what we know we have to do. And that is for the best. Please know we are thinking and praying with you and for you.

Poor guy... and many hugs to you, Liz for all that you're going through. Unfortunately sometimes we need to make these rough decisions for our animals. We all know you will do what is right and not put Pooh through anymore than he can handle. It's always so hard with the babies... but in our hearts we know when they have had enough when on this fine line as you are. Sure hope he pulls through though... he's such a cutie! I'm very glad to hear that Piglet is making progress though!

Liz, that is exactly the reason that YOU keep breeding, because of your tender heart and love for these strong, yet so fragile creatures! It breaks my heart that Pooh is gone, but I hope you can rest at least a teensy bit easier that youo didn't have to make that decision for him. Happy Frolicking little Pooh!

Breeding is a rough business and only those of us who have had to face the inexplicable losses know how heart wrenching it can be. I've come to believe that we really don't own these wonderful creatures - God does and he entrusts them to us. Sometimes he calls them back and we can't understand why but we must believe they are all in a better place for a better reason.
Pooh isn't suffering and I'm sure he will be a guardian angel for this "bubba" Piglet!

Liz, I am SSSSOOOO Sorry. Believe me- I KNOW how you feel. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
I am still exausted from my ordeal at Leesburg. Everything happened at once for me too- all very fast, not alot of time to think, and many hard decisions. Now I am trying to pay off over 12K in vet bills. Luckily mare & foal are home, but there have been 2 bouts since they came back, and they are still on 24 hour watch basically. I just got laid off a month ago so, I am here all the time and can watch them.
I tried to push for discounted breedings & also tried to get some jobs doing website design- no monetary or additional "help" with my barn routine either. A few pick me up letters from some kind COTH members, but now I am in VERY bad financial shape. I may have to sell all of my guys because I can not afford to feed them. My husband is having a fit. I just sold one to a nice family at a price that makes me SICK- just to buy some hay. It was either that, or sell at the auction- which is the point I am getting to. I can only pray to GOD they bring a high enough price NOT to go for meat. It makes me sick. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/cry.gif If I knew I was going to be laid off would it have made a difference to try & save my mare? I don't know. I would have had a 10k buffer, but now, I have nothing, and still am trying to find $2,500 to pay off the remaining vet balance.
Please know Pooh is in a better place now, and be so thankful for the friends you have that are there for you in your time of need. Things could be alot worse...

Liz, I was so optimistic for your twins when they were first born. I am so sorry for your loss of Pooh and now Piglet's troubles. I am jingling like crazy for you. My heart goes out to you and poor Tigger.
