Hold on there Piglet!

Now I was told that if a horse gets septic infection that if you clear it up fast enough with antibiotics they won't have permanent injury. Is tht true? I certainly hope so for little Piglet...

Not to be negative, but this year SUCKS!!!!!!

You are getting more than your share of bad news this year Liz, next year you are due for some real payback in the other direction!!!

LEP, yes it is possible for a horse to COMPLETELY recover from a septic infection. My mare did two years ago---after a month in the hospital and 6+ months of "rehab" via MOI. Everything was fine.....of course that was until she decided to slice her other leg up and spend 3 more weeks in the hospital this year!

GOOD LUCK little Piglet http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif I have just been advised by the vets to give the OK to put Piglet down. He has not made any progress and is getting worse, he is also starting to be unable to get up because of the swelling in his joints, none of the antibotics have worked.

Good bye my boys you will be together now like you where before.

I am so sorry to hear about Piglet. Sometimes the best thing for them is the hardest thing for us. I'm sure they are happy to be together again and will be waiting at the rainbow bridge when you get there.

We also lost 2 foals this year and it has been extremely hard. My thoughts are with you in this very difficult time. Hope Tigger is coping.

Hi there,

I have been through many struggles like you have undergone with foals and broodmares. It is truly a tough business on the heart. It is so hard to choose to draw the line with regards to HOW far you will go versus the chance that the foal will have a productive life. I truly am sorry for your losses.
If there is one thing we can learn as breeders from this, i believe heartache like this can be avoided and at least minimized if we routinely ULTRASOUNDED several times during a pregnancy. We ultrasound 14 days after breeding(to be able to pinch off twins), 24-26 days after breeding, ultrasound or palpate at 42 days, as well as 60 plus days we palpate to quadruple check. We also do a December palpation on our pregnant mares to ensure they have remained in foal. If at least two or three ultrasounds are given, there is virtually no chance of "missing" a hiding embryo. I'm not saying your situation was intentional twins, or failure to ultraound enough. I do not know your situation, but some people cause this to happen in the hopes they will have two "cute" foals on the ground. I think if people realized how dangerous and foolish it is to intentionally allow a twin pregnancy to carry on it would never happen and pain and suffering like this would need not happen to innocent horses.

Once again i am truly sorry for your loss.

I am very sorry to hear of the loss of both boys. We invest so much time and money into this dream, not to mention the investment of ourselves and especially our hearts. We take away from our families, and our future. It is such a huge gamble, and when it ends tragically like this, it is hard to justify going on. Hopefully you can comfort your self with thoughts of the good results, like your other surprize this year, and the loss will become not too much to bear.

Perhaps you don't know Liz. She is a professional breeder who stands 6 stallions and about 10 mares of her own and has been doing this for quite a while. Unfortunately, even the best repro vets occassionally miss twins. This is just a tragic outcome of that eventuality.

Dear Liz,

I've been away from the boards for a bit and am so very, very sorry to hear that you lost both of these babies. I know how much emotion, effort, time and money you put into trying to save first both, and then at least one of the babies. My heart goes out to you and the mama mare. HUGS to you both!

And to Independent Gal --

You are mistaken. Multiple ultrasounds do not always reveal twins. I know because several years ago I had a mare abort twins after many checks, and after what seemed to be a single, not double ovulation. I am sure you mean well, but Liz knows what she is doing and this sad result was never intended.

Dear Liz,

I am so very sorry for your loss and all of the sadness and difficult times you have been through. You did everything within your ability to keep those little guys going, and I hope you can find some comfort in that. Being in the breeding business means that there is the inevitablity that these things will happen simply because that is the way of things. But the mere knowledge of that can never make the experience of it any easier. You have quite a bit of support here on the boards Liz, and we are all sending warm thoughts your way.

Tigger is going home today with her owner Lauren. Tigger must be kept in isolation for a few weeks, they are afraid she maybe harboring the bad bugs that the boys had. I'm sure she will be OK but don't want to jinx her or her owner--seems like every time I was thinking things where getting better with this they only would get worse.

This whole thing has me so tired and sad, what a roller coaster ride it has been. Financially it has also been a hard hit. I just don't want to think about it any more for a while, I haven't even told my husband or daughter.
I did do an evil thing with the pig and my barn girl Helen today and that cheered me up a little.

I appreciate the post about sonogramming, believe me when I say this was not something I wanted, nor did this mare go unchecked. She was sonogramed both before and after breeding and it is something that got missed, it happens even to us "pros" and even the best vets can screw up.

Thanks again everyone for all your good thoughts, wishes, jingles, prayers and tears. It has helped tremendously

In the beginning I was so sure they would make it. It is so terrible the suffering you and the foals have gone through. I hope that the financial aspect will work out okay.

I have to say it makes me feel a little better about myself to see such a wellknown and successful "big-time" breeder be so emotionally involved. Often, as a "small-time" breeder, I blame myself and feel so alone when things don't go as planned. Your story and the support that you have received here makes me realize that none of us are alone in the suffering we go through in this business.

Your foals were precious and will not be forgotten by any of us that have followed your day by day struggle.

Good luck with any remaining foals! And good luck to all here for a more happy season next year!

I'm so sorry...with my own disaster I hadn't had time to read the latest on poor Piglet...what a total bummer...what a shame that they couldn't get him through it. Keep in mind you did all you could for him...and be thankful that you still have the mare!

Also...just to second some of the responses to Independent Gal....we just lost one of our best mares and twins on Saturday...our mare was full of cysts so an excellent repro specialist checked this mare with FOUR! ultrasounds between 16-32 days...and still one got missed...sometimes twins are just sneaky the way the look and yes, even the best vet can miss them despite all precautions. Just part of the risk we all take.....

Liz...I think we should both just hop on a plane to the Bahamas...or perhaps Hawaii....and and go have a good stiff drink....
