Our pony had a mild choke about 6 days ago......we have had her for 4 years she is 10 now and she has basically been on the same type of hay since we got her, a medium coarse local hay....she usually leaves the real coarse stuff behind but not always. I fed at midnight that night and came down at 7:00 am and found her choking........my vet figured she ate all the good stuff and then in the wee hours of the morning started to munch on the coarser stuff and some of it got stuck really far down closer to where it empties into the stomach.....(she did manage to clear it on her own 15 minutes before the vet arrived)........so she is now on a really fine non stemmy hay.
From a previous float by this same vet we know that this ponies mouth only opens about half way......which makes it very difficult to float.......and we are thinking this restriction in her jaw might have contributed to her choke......has anybody come across this before?
