Hello:
I was wondering if anyone had an suggestions for taming my TB wild cowlicky mane. He has a cowlick that is about halfway up his mane that either flips to the opposite side and/or all the hair points straight forward.

This is what I have tried. Right now I have his mane plastered in gel and hairspray, with a Jammies hood over top. I have tried the whole gel and braiding technique, but the braids just make his hair stand up even worse.

His cowlick gets worse when I have his mane pulled to the proper lenght. Right now its too long (about 8" long) and its not quite as much of a problem.

I need this problem to be GONE. Competition season starts soon.

Thanks!

Roach it!

That's what I did with my guy's mane, at it looked great. His mane was thick and went all different directions. It looked great braided, but not great the rest of the time. I gave him a 2-3 inch mohawk and never looked back.

What sort of competitions do you do with him? Is it not appropriate to braid his mane if it bothers you that much? I'm not sure it's possible to change the results of a cowlick's influence on what direction the hair points.
I think horses with pulled manes look kinda cute when the hair stands up a bit :)

Never Roach a Mane...
PULL it very short. make sure you keep it even and consistant.
Then,, braid it down to end. SOME people even use dippity -do or gel to make mane heavy for braiding. Take yarn and tie off the ends as if braiding.
Then, simply leave braids in for about a week. and redo.
I had a pony that had a WILD mane . Did this and it is now perfect. He has a wonderfully laying down mane and it is on the right side. ;)
Good Luck..
DO NOT ROACH the mane !!! pleeeeze

space out the hair and band it down the mane so you can trian it to fall to one side and leave the bands in, for a couple of days when you take them out it should be all on one side , to help it you could also pull the mane so its short and easier to malipuate

Thank you everyone. I will try the braiding down technique again (I tried late fall, but I didn't stay very persistent at it).

I event, so I can show either braided or with a pulled mane. I will show in braids, but the mane sticking up drives me nuts!

Anyway, he is faultless in every other way, so I guess I can't complain!

Thanks again!

I have the same problem, so I feel your pain. My TB doesn't just have hair that splits on either side. Like yours, he has some cowlicks that make it go every which direction and he looks like a goof. :)

I have roached it the last couple of summers, but I think this year I'm going to just pull it short and say to heck with it.

Unless you play polo! Then it's just a matter of do you roach the forelock or not. Marriages have split up over this!

My TB's mane goes left, then right, then left, then up then right. It's all over the place!

When it gets longer it will start to lay flat. I have tired lyrca hoods, braiding etc. They're just temporary fixes. When I pull his mane it's almost like a mohawk. It looks very cute though. ;)

I event also and when I show braided his mane looks very nice but the rest of the time it's just wild. Suits his personality though.

On certain breeds I don't mind a roached mane..drafts...draft crosses but it's rare that a TB would look good with a roached mane, IMO.

So, basically I'd just run with it. Not a big deal.
