View Full Version : Radnor anyone?

I know this got tagged on at the end of the Pan Am thread, but Radnor needs its own thread, donchathink?

I'll be there to help Jenna Schildmier with Tumble Dry, we'll be stabled with Holly Hepp and crew.

I'll be easy to recognize, tall blonde, fat lip with bruised chin (although I'm hoping it will look better in a few more days). If not, I've already discovered it's possible to drink coffee, diet coke, water, and most importantly, beer, through a straw!

I'll be there helping Garry Roque with Marmara and My Romance (aka 'Lips'). I'm hoping (reallyl, really hoping!) that it is drier this year than last. I'm not sure where we'll be stabled, but I'll look you up LAZ - we can have a beer together and you can tell me how you got your fat lip!

Note to Fred - I'll post or email you when we get back and tell you how Lips did. He looks great by the way - ready to rock and roll on the cross country. (Although, I think he'd rather skip the boring, horrid dressage phase if he had his way.)

Janette,

I'm so sad I won't be there this year. It was fun meeting you last year, despite the weather. I still don't feel 100% dry. Do you?

I can't wait to hear how Lips goes: it's just killing me that I cannot watch it firsthand. I do hope his flatwork will be given proper attention over the winter - particularly if he's going to move up to Advanced next Spring. Will he go to Florida this winter?

How is your young stallion?

Eat waffles and omelettes and think of me!

No Robby, I still don't feel dry....you should see the raincoats, rubber boots, sweatshirts etc that I've packed. I had so much stuff, I sent it in the horse trailer as I'm sure it won't fit in the car. I'll be driving down tomorrow and I'm watching the weather forecast like a hawk.....sadly, it looks like rain on Friday.

It's too bad you won't be there, as it would have been fun to visit in the sunshine, sitting around eating waffles and drinking cocktails....oh well, maybe next year.

Lips is doing much better at the dressage. However, as is the case with many horses, there are ups and downs until it is really confirmed at the level he needs to be going. When he's on though, he looks great. When he's arguing, well, let's just say the entertainment value is high, what with the antics and all.

My guy did his first prelims this year and was really good. Checkmate was his last one and it was a huge course (so big, I refused to go look at it and was horrified when I saw the pictures...my poor baby!). Forrest just had one greenie run out at a tough combination. However, he pulled a back shoe somewhere on course and really bashed his foot up. That was Sept. 6th and we're still poulticing, soaking etc as he's still not sound. Hopefully, once Radnor and Fairhill are over and I have time to ride, I'll have a sound horse to ride.

Again, I wish you were coming, but I'll fill you in with all the scoop when I'm back.

I am being coaxed by the new man in my life to go up there and watch Xc this weekend while he is working. Sooo I am about a 60% chance of going now. Looking better by the day.

Soo I am up for a whole bunch of Omelettes and waffles!! And don't forget the shopping!!!

Ps: I can also do a quick write up from the show and might be able to snag some digital pics as well if that helps everyone.

Thanks Janette, and give Lips a big hug and kiss from me - and best wishes for a safe trip for my little boy!
For those who don't know Lips, aka My Romance, is a 6 year old FULL TB http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif A Fine Romance baby, who I bottle raised when his mommy rejected him.
A couple of weeks ago, at Intermediate at Glen Oro, he came SECOND, with another A Fine Romance baby (not bred by me) coming third at her first outing at Intermediate. This is 'Romancing' , a 7 yr old - from AFR's first crop - ridden by Penny Rowland. Does anyone know if Romancing/Abby is going? Romancing is 3/4 Tb 1/4 Trak.

anyone going with a video camera.. would it be possible to get anything of Lips going XC or stadium?

Please keep an eye out for me on the horse Center Stage, ridden by Melissa Silverman. He's a little grey horse that I owned for five years and took from baby green to Prelim horse trials, and he recently won the Open Intermed. Division at Poplar Place Horse Trials. He had a very bad suspensory tear a couple of years ago, so it's amazing that he's competing at this level.

eventingetc.com (http://eventingetc.com)is briefly covering Radnor. They have listed the top 10 as of Thurs afternoon.

But I can't find an order of go listed anywhere! I am very dissapointed in the Radnor website!! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/sigh.gif http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif Many smaller events have much more up to date information. One would think that an event like Radnor would be up to par with regards to info like that! I volunteer for events whenever and wherever possible, so I do my share. (not to be flamed for complaining and not helping http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif) I wish I knew that they needed help in making the site more current! It might attract more spectators if it were (not that there isn't a ton of people there already, but the more the merrier).

Wendy Lewis is in 2nd so far. Go Wendy!!

I'm happy though, a rider from my former barn placed 35th! And it was his first 1*. I think it's admirable he finished all in one piece!

I was with a fence judge at the frog pond (18 and 19) and saw some very scary stuff going on there, I think the footing wasn't all that great. While I was watching I saw at least 3 people get elimnintaed there, and was there when the poor girl had to be taken to the hospital. I hope she's ok!

Jess, thank you very much! We are beyond thrilled: other than throwing a minor temper tantrum in the dressage ring (horse decided that the red Cadillac judges' truck was not to be tolerated), he was almost foot perfect throughout, and was very clever on some new questions. It was a lovely weekend, the weather held perfectly, and the crowds and kids were alot of fun.

Final results in the International are:

1st: Mighty Mite, Debi Crowley, 49.6
2nd: Rampant Lion, Wendy Lewis, 50.0
3rd: Brindabella, Phillip Dutton, 53.6
4th: San Salvador, Darren Chiacchia, 53.6
5th: Top Deck II, Kerrey Philhower, 54.6
6th: Mackinac, Sara DAvis, 54.6
7th: Idalgo, Buck Davidson, 57.0
8th: Stina, Bonnie Mosser, 57.4
9th: The Tracker, Paul Delbrook, 58.4
10th: Mr. Freeze, Katie Evans, 58.6
11th: Napalm, Ian Roberts, 58.6 (Best Conditioned)
12th: Amazing Odessey, Phillip Dutton, 60.4
13th: Presto, Allison Springer, 60.6
14th: Cahir, Emilee Libby, 60.8
15th: Southbound, Darren Chiacchia, 61.0

In the National, it was

OK well so much for my "live" reports.. I was beat butt tired each night and new SO and I basically went to dinner and collapesed.

Here's the bits and pieces I noticed over the weekend:

First off for NMS and TLE, I rode with Ralphie and Petey in the horse ambulance off the course. In fact I caught Petey after they slipped and fell on the grassy turn to the gallop lane back up the hill from the back field. Ralph tried to grab him as he was getting up but missed, petey came galloping up and I stood there saying "Whoa Petey" and he looked like "Oh well she knows my name, I'll stop! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif" He was great during the vet lookover and the trailer ride back to the barns. Stayed very calm throughout and looked much relieved to just be around his grooms when we got back to the barn. Ralph was great, I told him to just stand still and when we trailered backl to ride in the cab and relax. He never said much but he did thank me. Honestly it sucked for him since he and Petey had been giking butt to that point. He just missed the turn a bit, remembered where he was late and pulled and petey couldn't hold his footing at that speed and turn.

OK on to the rest...

Holly's fall with I Spy... just a bit of a fluke thing, though those of us at the water (2nd to last fence) thought he looked a bit tired.

Debi and Might Mite were fantastic looking all weekend and during theirn entire xc round Brian kept announcing "IF she goes clean she'll be the new leader" No pressure there.

Umm Wendy and Darren looked great on XC, but Darren was a bit overly handsy in stadium with Southbound, and looked to be disagreeing with San Salvador a bit too.

Buck and Idalgo also set the course on fire, he rode a very nice trip and was brilliantn through the double corners and the frog pond, where I was at that point.

Stina and Bonnie Looked awesome and really rode well throughout but after stadium when i congratulated her she mentioned that she was gonna have to work on a better dressage test. mmm Bonnie on a mission, look out next year!!

Sara and Mackinac have looked great all fall and won some and this weekend she really showed how well they have clicked. Look for her to be a threat at the 3*'s next year.

Ok well I am being summoned for some pancakes (Oh darn)

It was a great Radnor with great weather.

Another Radnor XC eye witness rehash http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Saw Duncan and Tip at 5c (Fox & Drop) and the last, they looked totally awesome!

Settled in at the Frog Pond for awhile, so I saw Eleanor Brennan and Baily II's fall. I had been following each pair's approach from up the hill to the jumps in and through the water, and the only thing I notice a little different in Eleanor's ride was that she didn't start kicking like a demon once in the water (most of the other rider's did) Baily II seemed to be stalling out when he came to the bank up and made a good effort, but stumbled badly and rider was catapulted into the bounce. Horse was fine, and politely stood and waited for her to remount, which she stood and seemed ready to do, then clutched her chest and collapsed again. Ouch! Anyone know the full report on her condition, hope she's okay. Horse was fine, his attitude was like "was that my fault? I tried, honestly!"

So if anything can be taken from that one, it's be sure to kick on through deep water! Especially since the footing seemed sticky in there.

Saw I Spy too and agreed he looked a bit tired, she cracked him over each bounce in. But not that tired, and the jump judges at the one before (the double hedges) said he looked fine there. So it probably was just a fluke.

Well, now we get too look forward to Fairhill CCI***! Great time to be on the east coast for eventers! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Neat that Debi won! Last Thanksgiving I was at Meadow Run Farm and Jim was teaching a clinic and she had two horses there, one of which may've been Mighty Mite. It was a big bay, sort of hot-to-trot, who was jumping huge into the water.

That Mighty Mite is a cool little horse! And I'm amazed that she made the time. I was sitting over across the road watching the corner option, the bank (#15) and the double brush... they looked great all the way through. Took the straight route at the corner, but the long way at the bank.

BUT... as you headed back up toward the road, the riders were supposed to turn into this lane between two split-rail fences. Debi missed the turn and galloped up the wrong lane, which dead-ended at the road, so she had to turn around and gallop back the way she came, and then go the right way. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif She must have lost a good 15 seconds there... I figured there was no way she made the time, but I guess she was really cooking everywhere else! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

You have to draw your own conculsions on "cooking". I believe Imtiaz has either the fastest or the second fastest steeplechase ride.

Beau (Mighty Mite) is only 16hh and pretty quiet, probably not the horse you saw Robby. Though he might really light up in schooling, he was an angel in the 10 minute box and for cooling out.

Congrats Spot!

Erin: I didn't realize she missed the turn up -- I thought that road crossing was slightly confusing when we walked it. By the long way at the bank, do you mean she did not do the bending four strides from the log to the bank up? How did her approach ride? I've been curious about how the corners rode: they kept moving the trees in between them during the week and the riders had readjust their plans between first and final course walks.

On time, I think everyone was surprised at how fast the course rode. We were expecting alot more time faults, and even thought our horse would have been closer to the time instead of 20+ seconds under.

Thanks Gry. So great to see you, and sorry we didn't get to spend more time.

Everyone I saw do the long way at the bank made it look pretty smooth. They just jumped 14 and then swung left and made a circle and came back to the bank.

I never made it all the way down there to see the bank up close... I was watching from up on top of the hill near the corner. That fence seemed to ride well for most people, although there were several glance-offs among the 20 or so horses I watched go through there. More people went the long way out of the group I watched.

Yup, that turn toward the road was confusing. Po Tatham also went the "wrong" way, but she just went back up the way the riders had come down, so it probably just added a couple seconds to her time. Poor Debi missed BOTH turns and really had to backtrack.

Robby the horse you saw was probably String Bean who always takes a huge leap into water. She's moving him up to Prelim in a few weeks.

Beau may be Appendex but you'd never know it by looking at him. He's got a great stride and she rarely has trouble with time if she decides to go for it. He was slow a couple weeks ago at Poplar Place where she won the Advanced dressage but it was her second try at the level and she didn't push him. With time though she still ended up second.

Simon and Beau did both their first one star and two star as barn buddies. Debi could not be move deserving! I talked to her this morning while she was driving home and she was pretty cute. She said it hadn't really sunk in yet because she always figured if she ever won anything that big she was sure she'd feel like a different person the next day. This morning she feels like the same old Debi.

I told her that after this she wouldn't get to be the "unkown rider from Elkmont, Alabama" anymore!

From what I heard on the girl who had to be taken away from the frog pond.. I was with the Dr. who looked her over before she left, and he thought that she just had a bad bruise on her hip and elbow, but wouldn't know if there was a crack on her hip or not until x-rayed. No broken ribs or anything it appears, thankfully. She really got smashed between the horse and fence.

I agree I didn't really see bad riding there, just an unlucky slip out of the water. Although there were quite a few horse who looked like they were getting stuck in the middle but got out ok. It was definatly an interesting fence to be sitting at all day.

I saw Duncan and Tip at the Fox Drop and Duck Pond. They looked great! He must be soo proud of the guy! Hope to see them at more things next year. I felt bad I was at the Fair Hill and PLantation Fields earlier in the year and missed him go BOTH times!

I got there just as he was going out on XC, so I saw him over jump number 6, I think... the feed stand. He looked good there. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif From what Brian announced, it sounded like the rest of the course went well for him, but I really have no idea.

Steuart survived a scare with a fat tendon on day one, but passed the jog, and the swelling went away... no idea what caused it. Dressage was "better than recent events but not as good as the last few days".

Willie jumped around clear cross country, and about 20 seconds over the time. And they jumped around clean on Stadium, rapping the last fence hard but it stayed up (unlike very many others who had that fence down!)

It was an awesome week, and it's fun to come here and see Duncan and Tip mentioned! They were great, but I may be a bit biased http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

TLE -- I saw his dressage warm-up, which looked nice, but I gather it didn't quite hold together in the ring. He show-jumped clean, but with a couple of time penalties, and also had a few time faults on x-c. I saw part of steeplechase and it looked fine, but missed his D. Flashy horse.

Does anyone know how the spectator that was run over by the duck pond is doing? Also, any updates on Eleanor Brennan? Hope everyone is ok.

Yep, a little kid was run over. I'm totally spacing on which horse it was, but he ran out at the last element, dumped the rider, plowed right through the rope marking the galloping lane, and over a little kid who was sitting right on the other side of the rope.

I left the jump as the emergency vehicle got there, but I'm assuming it was that little kid who was the injured spectator, since he (?) was screaming his little head off. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

That's what I heard too -- a rider I was helping in the vet box for was passing by on C and saw it happen, though we didn't know the end result. We did hear them send out the ambulance, but nothing about what happened. Hoping that everything ended up ok and he was more frightened than hurt.

Thanks Libby. We were very pleased with him (and he is very pleased right now to not have to have another @#$% bath for a few days).

Fred, I watched his dressage and his show jumping. In dressage, he just seemed a bit tense and not very through: maybe just a touch of I'm too fit and feel good? However, I was watching from the top of the hill where I was hand grazing, so someone else closer up may have had a better look. He had two stops x-c and some time, but I didn't see either of the stops. His show jumping was fairly smooth, though he had a bit of time. He certainly has some of his dad's "look" (including a lovely head and eye), but I think his dam comes out more in his jump, at least based on what I saw. He finished up in 67th.

Fred, I saw a bit of Lips', XC. I think I even have a photo or two (will have to check). He looked pretty good, but not totally in to it. He jumps really well, but it looked like he and Garry were having a bit of a discussion vis a vis, speed and line, etc. Towards the end he also looked perhaps a hair tired. He's got a great jump though, and what a face!

Fred, we were very pleased with Lips at Radnor....well once the dressage was over. Actually, Lips did pretty much as good a test as he is capable of at this time. He is built a little downhill and he is only 6, so it will take some time and muscling to be able to hold the frame they are looking for. He did however, do a nice quiet test (apart from a small hissy fit at the reinback) that really was one of his best to this point. (Although the dressage doesn't necessarily come easy to Lips, he certainly tries to do a good job.)

His cross country was awesome. His two quits were of the green variety. Fence 5 was a huge drop to a skinny. Lips still likes to launch off of drops and that's what he did! (Huge gasp from the crowd...) Garry got him to the skinny, but due to the large leap he took, and due to him being somewhat distracted by all the people, he didn't see the skinny until the last minute and ran out. He jumped it beautifully on the second try. The other run out was also a green type moment. Once he had the first runout, Garry didn't push for time so that Lips could have a positive experience and I think he did. Finished beautifully, and recovered well. (He does need to learn to gallop with his nose off the ground.....not a sign of fatigue, it's just the way he goes right now - he did steeplechase that way too!)

Lips jogged sound Sunday and Garry was pleased with his show jumping. It was a toughish course to make the time and leave rails up, so we were pleased with 0 rails and just 6 seconds over.

Fred, you would have been very proud of your boy. He was an absolute angel to handle all weekend. It's like he loves three days - we clipped him without any problems and he was wonderful to handle both in the 10 minute box and after he was finished. (He hates, really hates, cold water and we had to use ice water on him when he was done. All he did was a) flap his lips at us or b) stamp his feet on the ground! No kicking or jumping around.)

Overall, we think Lips was a star at Radnor - he's only 6 and will only get better. (I know I'm biased, but he really was a good boy!!)

By the way, Garry's other ride, who's normally a wonderful dressage horse, was in heat and very unhappy for dressage. Hence, bad test. On cross country day, she was having a wonderful round until she shipped and fell turning from fence 14 to 15(??). Up she jumped and ran away....revenge for being clipped and being tubed I guess!!! Oh well, that's eventing.

Robby, too bad you weren't there. The weather was fabulous and I've got a sun burn now. (I had every piece of rain gear I own with me this year, and apart from a slight drizzle early Sunday morning, I didn't need any of it.) Hopefully, the weather will be just as cooperative at Fairhill!!

Fred, email me privately if you want any more info on Lips at Radnor.

thanks GotSpots, Heather and Janette for the update on Lips - if you did get a picture, Heather, I would LOVE that!! I'd like to think he gets his jumping ability from his Dad, but I'm sure it could have come from either or both of them. He certainly is brave though. We've never seen his Mom jump, - I got her off the track, but she is a big athletic mare, not a great mover, but a handsome athlete, (with some jaw-dropping leaps and bucks in her repertoire) and a wonderful mare (rotten mother though, poor little Lips) Lips now has a baby full brother, named True Romance (Trueman) and at least Mac has sort of accepted him. She is in foal again for 2004, so we will keep our fingers crossed that all goes well with that.

The photographers that were there that typically sell to competitors (or owners) were Mary Phelps and Brant Gamma, neither of whom, to my knowledge, have websites (I think they only shoot film). I had heard someone say that Ted and Christine Tchir were there, though I never saw them myself. If they were, the photos will be up at sporthorsestudio.com after awhile.
