View Full Version : I feel like this can NOT be true - somebody tell me the truth! (Adequan)

So I heard the other day from my roommate's boss (who is admittedly crazy) that the regular recommended 5cc of Adequan pertains only to actual joint injections, and that you only need to give 1cc IM for it to be just as effective. She apparently heard this from a well-known racetrack vet in the area (which could mean ANY number of things.....). I feel like there's no way this can be true! Has anyone else heard this?

Not true. The Adequan label specifically states 5cc per injection, 1 injection every 4 days for 7 injections :)

This is true, but what about all the people who use it off label? Is this just another weird off-label thing?

(I've also heard that doing ANYTHING off-label, like giving it once a month, is like flushing money down the toilet.)

The studies were done that showed the 5cc, with that protocol, was what produced the most benefit. Not 1cc. Unless that vet had a way to look at cartilage uptake, he can't know that 1cc was doing the same thing.

It's not that doing ANYthing off label is a waste. This isn't an exact science and not even the studied max uptake is going to work for all horses. For some horses, twice a year loading is what they need. For others, another shot every 3-4 week is what they need to keep comfy. Yes, monthly shots is off-label, but in this case it doesn't mean it's dangerous, it's just not what was studied.

Perhaps this was heard backwards? 5cc is a large volume to inject IA... The labeled dose for Adequan IA is 250mg into the joint, which is 1ml. It makes perfect sense that more needs to be given IM to have positive effects on the joints.

Ah, good point about numbers being reversed.

That is a good point. I was thinking 5cc sounded like a ton of stuff to put in a joint. That wouldn't surprise me to hear that this woman in particular got her information backwards!

Interjoint would take the smaller amount not the larger.
So if anything 5 cc for IM (gets spread generally all over the body) and 1cc or less for inter joint where there is far less space available.

Thanks for clearing that up. That makes perfect sense. I knew something sounded fishy!
