For those that have experience with polyglycan injections, is it crucial to the effectiveness of the injection to pair it with the Tandem oral supplement they market along with it? Have you found that you've still had good results with the injection alone or paired with a different feed-through joint supplement, like Cosequin or CortaFlex?
TIA:)

When I was using Polyglycan, I was directed to bute my horse for a couple days before injecting him and the day after. This was to reduce inflammation so that the Polyglycan could be most effective.
Out of curiousity, what is the Tandem product you mentioned? What is it supposed to do?

I've never used polyglycan with any kind of supplemental oral product, and it has worked quite well for my mare. Most vets suggest a loading does of 5 cc per week for 4 weeks, then 5 cc a month, and I found it to be most effective this way.

ex-racer - It's appears to be a feed through joint supplement that you can use along with the injections. The ingredients are HA, chondroitin, and a form of glucosamine. My vet mentioned it to me in our polyglycan discussion but I'd never heard anyone say they were using it while using the injections before.
Here it is:

There is a lot of research out there showing poor bioavailability of oral joint supps. Go to www.thehorse.com for some really good reading.
After spending plenty of money on orals years ago, now we just use injectibles. MUCH more effective and I KNOW that the drug is in their system.

My horse got his first polyglycan shot a couple weeks ago. Another soon. Then I'm trying once a month for the rest of the year.
I did get Tandem, and think it is helping.
I've tried many joint supps on this horse, and do think Tandem is good. Plus it's cheaper than Cosequin.
I am using MSM, too.

Tutt - Thanks for the info. My horse is also on Cosequin and I was suprised to see that the Tandem appeared to work out cheaper per month than the Cosequin. Glad to hear that your horse appears to be doing well on it.

I use the polyglycan to replace traditional oral joint supplements as my horse responds really well to it. Orally he receives MSM, silica, grape seed extract, Selenium and vitamins A,B1,D3, and E but no longer gets expensive oral HA, glucosamine, and chondroitin. He has been doing fabulous on this program. However, every horse is different and you have to find out through much trial and error what will work best for your own horse.

PS my horse's protocol on paper is:
Loading 10 mg dose followed by 5 mg every 2 weeks. In real life he gets the loading dose before a big show or after a long vacation and gets the half dose whenever he "starts to feel it" for more than 3 rides in a row which tends to be every 2-3 weeks.

I have been using Polyglycan every 2-3 weeks on my now 20 yr old 17h wb for the last 2+ years, and started using Tandem Oral as my every day joint supplement after speaking w/ Arthrodynamic's vet on staff.
My horse had been on Uckele's Arthroxigen prior w/ great results.
All seemed fine at first and then about about 4 months in he started to get really stiff behind. I made an appt to have his hocks & stifles done at his regular every 6 month mark and went back to the Arthroxigen. I see a huge difference w/ my horse on it. He's more comfortable and fluid under saddle w/ that combo.
This being said, my friend uses Tandem as an everyday supp w/ Polyg once a month on her 8 yr old TB and sees great results, results that she didn't see when the horse was on Cosequin ASU.

roxy - I wish I had a crystal ball so I would know which combo would work best for us! I want results as soon as possible for my horse's sake but I hate to change too many variables at once without knowing which one actually helped. So many decisions! :)

Skip, I could use that crystal ball to predict me some lotto #'s so I can afford the Polyglycan & the Arthroxigen... Yay me, my horse only thrives on what may be the most expensive joint supp out there lol.
I tried the Tandem b/c I've had such great results on the Polyglycan that I figured it was certain to age regress my horse by 5 years! I kick myself for the 4 months I had him off the Arthroxigen, but I really am thrilled that my old man is still going strong.
