I currently have a TB that needs a new blanket - I'm used to buying for the short, stocky, well sprung types (Morgan, Arab, QH), and not sure which style will work best for him (I currently have him in a Schneiders but not sure which model - got it on bargain basement clearance last year - and not really happy with the fit on him). He is a very typical TB build; decent withers, deep through the chest but not broad, long but not wide. Measures an 86 but seems to fit better in an 84. He's a tall guy at 17 hands and the blanket I have for him now has a longer drop and it is actually too long.
He has a marginally decent winter coat but to keep his weight we blanket him when temps drop below freezing and this has worked out well. Likely looking at a midweight since he isn't clipped.
Suggestions? Durability is a higher priority than attractiveness.

I like Rambo's and Rhino's for my TB. They fit him very well. The Rambo is more durable. Him and his pasture mate enjoy dragging each other around by their clothing.
I also like the fit of the Pessoa blankets and Dover Northwind's. If I couldn't afford to get a Rambo I'd look into one of those.

Amigo's (same company and design of Rambo, Rhino) fit my TB great. He wears his MW all winter and it never rubs or shifts and wears like iron. This is his 3rd winter with it and it still looks brand new after a good washing.

Rambo seems to fit better than Amigo. One of mine has a rub from the Amigo. Have a Rambo Supreme and it's great, but pricey. Going for the originals next time.

Weatherbeeta, Orican, I think?? Fits my typical-built TB really well and is very tough. Lots of nice features.
I have found that Weatherbeetas fit huge though. This horse measures between 78-80 and wears that size in other brands...but the 72 fits him fine!

I've got an Oricon Freestyle and a Smartpak Thinsulate for my TB, although he's a shorty at 15.3! Both of those have pretty long drops, though. The neighboring TB, who is closer to 16.3, has a Rhino Wug, and that thing looks like a miniskirt on him!

Has anyone here tried the Tough1 blankets on TBs? They got raves in a 2008 Horse Journal review which did not cover many blanket manufacturers. The one they liked has buckles in the front for fit, but also velcro and snaps.
The 1680 denier blanket, which is the one they tested, is on sale at Chicks Saddlery for $99.95.

Weatherbeetas - I have two TB's and that's all they basically wear - only ones that don't rub or twist on them. :)

My TB has several Rambos. They fit well, keep her warm and dry, and never shift with all her antics outside all day.

Love the Rhino's, I'd buy Rambo but I'm too cheap...
I also tried Weatherbeeta and the fit was also good, but it started getting tears the first winter it was worn.

I bought a Buca a few months ago. So far I love it. Has not shifted at all.

I have a Rambo Wug for my narrowish, but deep with a big shoulder, 16.3 TB and although it is short (compared to the overly long fit of other blankets) I love its fit on him.

My TB mare wears a Rambo. INvest in one - they're worth it in the long run, and should be on sale at tack shops soon.

My guy is 16.2 with a big sloping shoulder. Most blankets rub the snot out of him. Horseware blankets are just a weird fit through the shoulders for him except for his secondhand Rhino with an integrated neck cover. Weatherbeetas aren't too bad, but his Smartpak thinsulate is the best fit. Plus it's not heavy to throw on him, which is so nice after I've been doing barnwork all day! I've only used this blanket for about a month and my boy is pretty good on his blankets, so I can't really speak for durability yet. I would definitely buy another one of these, though. Good value for the money.
ETA I don't think the drop is overly long, but my guy is pretty leggy. And his Rhino looks like a miniskirt on him too!

I've got 2 shoulder guards I rotate under Tony's blankets - never have problems with any blankets then.

I have a very small framed TB, but long and I found that Dover's Rider blanket fit him well!!!

I got my narrow OTTB a Rambo original turnout this year... someone else at my barn said they don't stay put well on TB's, but this one seems to stay in place just fine. Also, no blanket rubs this year whatsoever. And it's holding up well to the roughhousing my boy does with his pasture mates, so no complaints other than the price tag, haha... but if it lasts me a number of years, it will definitely be a bargain in the long run.

Dover's Riders International Supreme -
No shift, no rub, no leak and you can get a hood to go with it that will cover their whole neck right up to behind his ears!
Our guy has both the sheet and the blanket and stays warm and dry all winter.

Nobody has used the Tough1? The one I'm interested in has a gusset for the shoulder and gussets behind the elbow and in front of the stifle.
Guess I'll start a new post. :)

I love my schneiders stormshield euro cut - both the sheet and the blanket don't shift or move at all and it's not super lofty huge overfilled, but very warm. Mine's the burgandy 2 year warranty one which I think is discontinued, but the stormshield eurofit or adjusta-wither are all good. Just don't get a TB a cut back or other style fit.
Now I will say that I bought my now 3 year old TB the super duper cheap dura-tech schneiders blanket last october and I wasn't thrilled about the fit, BUT it was $65 and it is warm and waterproof, and $65 for a blanket that is only going to be used one season works for me. I will concede that part of the cheaper blanket's fitting issue might have to do with the chunkitude of the youngster. The blanket is a 75 and that's generous for what he measured when I bought it (and he hasn't grown in height a lot since then), but the schneiders 80 liner actually fits him better everywhere but the length and that's just barely off and my BMB 80 stuff - runs small - is TOO small ... he's not quite 15'3 yet. His TB pedigree? By Tank out of Mac Truck.

Rhino's or Rambos! I had a Rhino on my old TB mare- never got a blanket rub and the blanket always stayed put!
