View Full Version : TB Pedigree analysis for jumpers... anyone?

Curious about this mare's pedigree. It appears that far back she had pretty good lines for producing jumpers, but I honestly don't know much about TB pedigrees. Anything special at all or worth preserving? I've had someone mention that this mare might be worth breeding to produce eventers or jumper types. Beyond any pedigree significance, she has an excellent mind and is a very good jumper.

Thanks in advance.

First 2 generations: nothing of real note; third generation: Grey Dawn is the big name there; 4th generation: Nashua (one of the more "level headed" Nasrullah lines) , Prince John, Northern Dancer (who is everywhere...so good but not "special") and Double Jay (who IS getting harder to find/needs preserving). I tend to stick with the first 4 generations looking for noteables.

Thank you, camohn! Very interesting. I knew that Grey Dawn II was good, but didn't know much about Grey Dawn. And, thanks for pointing out Double Jay - I had no inclination at all that he was the great Dam-sire of Gem Twist. So, I guess even though the notable names are quite far back, it makes sense that the mare turned out to be a good jumper, no? Or, in terms of dilution, do you think that is overreaching?

"Dilution" down the generations is why I don't bother too much with pedigree past 4 generations....though that is not as much of an issue with a few very prepotent for type producers like Bold Ruler and Raise A Native. Are you looking to breed her to a TB or non TB? If you are looking TB I would look for Alydar lines (very prepotent for the jump and no other crosses in the mare to Raise A Native to worry about line breeding) or linebreed the Double Jay. Grey Dawn gets his jump from Herbager.

I personally am not, but she is for sale and I've had a suggestion from someone interested that they might use her for that, so I thought I could at least look into it a little.

When I saw that she had Grey Dawn/Mahmoud on both sides I became even more curious and thought perhaps her jump ability and brain could be attributed to her breeding. That of course begged the question, for me - who else in her pedigree contributed to those attributes, if anyone? I saw that her sire was a good stakes winner, and her great Dam-sire was known as a sire of stakes winners, and didn't know if they were known for producing jumpers or not.

Anyway, I'm starting to ramble. Now I know a little more about it should someone ask about her breeding and prospects as a broodmare. Thanks so much for your insight.

My mare (who was a superb jumper), was descended from the Herbager/ Grey Dawn sireline. I don't know if her talent had anything to do with that, as she had other jumper-producers in her pedigree as well.. Herbager was a gorgeous sporty-looking horse if he does look somewhat light in the bone in the allbreedpedigree pic.

I like the Danzig and Double Jay in Species Memories' pedigree too.
