I am hoping to have a coming 5 year old colt complete a Novice level event by the end of the year. I wanted to send him off to get him re-started and "ring broke." (He was started by a race horseperson) I would hope to then ship in for lessons/tune-ups. Would need someone w experience w management of colts/stallion. I have one person in mind but I think they are too far to "commute to" for lessons so I would not have the continuity I was hoping for.

The other thought is --go with one person to get him re-started (can be beyond lesson commuting distance) and than find an event barn I can ship a colt in for lessons within hour or so from Baltimore.
(My main desire is I want to be able to keep him home once he is restarted but get some help.)
Any suggestions appreciated under either option.

For getting him re-started under saddle with basic good dressage work, I would highly recommend Inga Janke, Renee Carter or Benny Pfabe. Inga is in Warrenton and works with many stallions. Renee is in the Middleburg area as well, but I don't know if she takes stallions. Benny is in that area too. He is a beautiful rider and just the greatest person. He trains out of an event barn, but is primarily a dressage rider. I'm not sure whether he would take a stallion, either, but it's worth asking.

In S. PA there is Hank Hutson, who has both an eventing and dressage background and is excellent with both. He deals very well with stallions.

Let me know if you'd like contact info for any of these folks. Best of luck!

Ryan Wood, Boyd Martin or Phillip Dutton work with stallions at True Prospect Farm. Ryan is riding two of mine right now.

Angela Sasso has started most of our horses...She is in Adamstown, PA., and is wonderful with young horses.....Try Googling "ANGELA SASSO DRESSAGE". ANGELA started young horses for ISF for many, many years, and then got more experience in Holland.

Hope this helps....
Warmly,
Karin

Another vote for Angela. She has been wonderful for our horse, and those she has started for our trainers. They talk about how good a foundation she gave them. While I know she has kept young stallions there, I expect you should check with her first about that.

Renee does a stellar job, and she is in the Orlean area, closer to Warrenton than to Middleburg. Benny and Inge are great people, too, but I know Renee better. She'll be starting my baby!

Abe Pugh of Cedar Creek Stables in the south central PA area is a great one with starting, re-starting young ones, and he is experienced with colts. His assitant trainer is an eventer as well, and also a good hand with young horses.

They are just north of the MD/PA state line, and not far from I-70, nor too terribly far from NoVA either.
