I called an organizer to inquire about getting an eligible filly inspected and the person said, "American breeders are amatuers. The Europeans are profesionals." DFW area.

I felt very warm and cozy about the organzaiton after that. We didn't discuss any of my bloodlines or the specific horse and after that remark, I didn't want to even go there. Needless to say, we're staying home.

Donna, do you mean you called someone who was hosting the inspection or you called the office?

In defense of the Gov a host's ignorant comments should not be held against them. I would however bring this to the offices attention as soon as possible as this person clearly should not be a host.

Uggghhh!!!! I have several words for them, none of which are printable....

In what context was this said? I think this person should be excoriated publicly. WHO WAS IT???

What pisses me off even further is the fact that this person almost certainly SELLS horses in the American market.

I'm sorry this happened to you Donna -- I hope you told them to lick your boots!

Edited to add: Would this inspection be listed here? (http://www.oldenburghorse.com/inspections.html)

That is pretty bad. I really think that some people dont know how to treat others. One Inspection I attended recently had some comments made that I felt were less than professional, and did noting but make the person saying them look like a heel.
The hosts and inspectors need to realize that as a REPRESENTATIVE of their breed groups, they are a huge influence to people and should act as such. Setting as good an example as they can. It is just plain courteousy.
Rudeness is a major turnoff for me.

Hansiska...I just thanked her for her time.

Context...let's see, the example of women huffing off after inspections...she told me about a foal so ugly that a European would not have even brought it to the inspections...about how the person from Germany doesn't have a lot of personality and people have trouble dealing with that...

Call the GOV office...not worth it to me. In time I'll start her after I start her under saddle, take her to approvals (not GOV) let her have a foal, then get to real work. Of course...this probably ISN'T how the professional brfeeders in Europe do it (is there an icon for "gagging now")???

Dray, just to clarify your last posting a bit...
Were the items listed under "context" all comments or actions made by the host of the inspection? Thanks!

Sorry you came away with a less than stellar impresion at the GOV inspection you attended based upon this particular host. All I can add is my own experience. I live about equal distances from two inspection sites, but I will never go to one hosted at a particular farm because of my impression of the attitudes of the host (I think snotty would describe it conservatively http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif)...and I've gotten the same negative feeling when I attended clinics at this facility, too. I think I'm lucky because I have the option to go elsewhere where everyone is friendly and supportive.

I think people that make comments and behave as you've described would do well to investigate the self-improvement section of a Borders book store or to catch a few episodes of the Dr. Phil show. Good manners can take you a long way.

And if that doesn't get them maybe throwing out the finacial consequences of their immmature and unprofessional behavior may have more impact. Who want's to do business with this type of person? In my opinion, its not worth it to me to have any personal or business relationships with them no matter how great their horses might be.

I think your issue is with the host and not GOV itself. If you would like to contact the main office maybe you can find out what is going on. If not I understand how this has left you with a bad taste in your mouth.
All I can say is 2 years ago I went to a GOV inspection (had no foals as I had just moved) run by a stallion owner that was trying to get his stock approved GOV. It was the worst inspection I had ever seen. The judges were very unhappy with the unprofessionalism shown by the host and the site being unprepared. Basically he just wanted to host it to show off his own horses and didnt give a hoot about anyone else. In the end they did not want to come back to my area so I asked if I hosted the next one would they come back and they stated yes. So now inspections are run very differently and our turn out has been very good with people leaving much happier. What I am getting at is you might have talked to someone who has their own adgenda...I dont know, but its possible in any registry. So please dont be put off, tell the home office as Im sure they would be interesting in hearing your comments and I hope in the future that things will work out for you.

I'm very sorry this happened to you. It's quite discouraging to say the least. Honestly, GOV, ISR/Old, AHS, AHHA, whatever, the local registry office needs, and I'm sure would appreciate, a telephone call or an email letting them know you have had this negative experience. It helps us all to voice our concerns and constructive criticisms. Personally, I would have phoned or emailed Holly Simensen immediately about this. I'm not criticizing you because you don't want to do that, but it does help the registries and all of us breeders to report this kind of rude and inhospitable conduct.

I agree with reporting it to the GOV offices. Holly would be appalled.

Bring your filly on down here. We are not that far and the GOV inspection will be at a nice facility with a sweet owner.

Donna,

I am also sorry that whoever this person was was rude to you- but please DON'T hold it against the GOV. They cannont be responsible for what other people say -site hosts or not.
no- we do not have a "perfect" system in place in the US but the various breed orginazations try to accomodateas many as many different kinds of people as possible. Goodness knows in horses, breeding in particular, everyone has their own strong opinion and lots of times it causes people to not easily get along. We just have to make the best out of it, IMO.
Some people like to talk like they are know- it -alls and instead of arguing with them I have learned to smile, nod, and later laugh about it.
I really hope that you still bring the filly, if the mare is going to be coming- there are plenty of nice people there, too!

To all...
Thank you all for your positive feedback. I was on the road to an interview in North Dallas this morning. I called home and checked messages and had a telephone message from Holly. This was about 8am! I called her back and we had a productive, lengthy discussion and I must say that my impression of the GOV did a total turn around at that point.

The fact that Holly got right on top of this and wanted to know about it and actually took the time to call me spoke volumes. She provided me with information regarding the future and we spoke of bloodlines, etc. Very nice person.

I know that there are so many quality horses registered with the GOV.

Thank you all again!

Donna

LOL to funny i just got off the phone with Holly myself and had a very negative phone call. I will never and i repeate NEVER reg a foal with the GOV !!!!

It appears to me that if you are not a huge breader with them and stand some of there stallions You will get NO respect.

So I will take my Fienbrand filly to the ISR and never ever will have anything to do with the GOV again.

And just to let everyone know i saw all the posts about ISR and the GOV and i never posted beacuse i never had a reason too, well people now i know first hand.
IMHO buyer beware when it comes to the GOV!!!

I know the flames are going to start but this is my thoughts and iam sticking to them.

Well I have two mares so I can't say I'm a big breeder and I've had tons of help and support from the GOV in the last few years. Can't say enough good things about them. I guess it comes down to you can't make everyone happy and you individually just have to choose the registry that you feel at home in and be happy there.

Y&A... could you be a bit more specific?

We are not a big breeding farm and have had very good treatment from GOV. I find myself wondering exactly what it was that Holly said that made you come to that conclusion.

YandA Farms, I just spoke with the GOV office. Your issue has to do with a dispute with another breeder. Issues like this do not directly involve GOV. As Holly suggested, you might want to consider arbitration to settle the matter privately between you and the other individual. It is not fair for you to come on this forum and malign Holly or GOV simply because the registry will not side with you on an issue that has nothing to do with the registry.

Cartier
Aug. 21, 2003, 12:41 PM
Chris,

I think Y and R was intentionally vague to avoid discussion of the specific issue… rather, she was commenting on general impressions. And now you come along with what can only be second hand information and someone's biased assessment. Unless of course you were part of the phone call to Y and R.
Otherwise, it seems like the the Office Manager likes to tell tales out of school… and then you post details which should have remained private.

I can't imagne other registries spreading stories this way... it seems unprofessional.

1st I did not do anything of the sort! What I said was mho on what i shared. I have a right and so dose anyone alse for that matter.

2nd for her to release any info of my coversation to you or anyone for that matter just shows how messed up the whole GOV is. And HOLLY for that matter!

I never said anything about my situation on this mb just exspressed my opion on what i feel!

So with that said i sugggest that you back off me and move along ! I have seen your posts all over this bd about how freaking great they are. But if anyone says something bad about the GOV you are right there to BLast them for there h o. What the conversation between Holly with the Gov and I is NO oNe's biz. So all i did was give my humble opion and that was it. Now if you would like to start the flames with me. then i would suggest you do it privately and not post anything that deals with me on this bd!!!!

Cartier,
I don't think Chris's account gives out any details whatsoever of what Y&A's problem is. It simply says that there is an issue between Y&A and another member of the GOV and that Holly didn't feel it was the GOV's responsiblty to settle the dispute.
We don't know from what Chris posted exactly what the issue is between Y&A and the other breeder ..

I cannot believe all that ranting going on about the GOV. If someone has a private squarrel that has nothing to do with the GOV and I think it is unfair to blame the Verband if they do not take sides, it is professional, but it is unprofessional to blame the Verband for being professional. And in my eyes it is defamation of a Verband when there are bad things said but not given proof or specifications. If one does not want to put the truth in full on the table - as we say here - then better do not write anything at all. I have had enough of that hateful b... sh.. against the GOV!

Sorry, but to paraphrase Y and R, why would Chris H have any business knowing anything at all about Y and R’s private conversation with the North American Office? And frankly, Chris' description of the issue seemed a bit contrived and self-serving to me … makes me wonder if the scenario Chirs H portrays isn’t skewed for effect.

Your post was inflammatory. I don't think that Chris or Holly trotted any of your private business out in the open. If they did, then we'd all know who you had a problem with and what the nature of the problem was.

People, can we please have a discussion about an issue WITHOUT it morphing into a discussion about the individuals who are part of the issue?

It's really not that hard. The other forums manage it ALL the time! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Rather than fling insults and innuendo around or make allegations, why not simply address the issue at hand?

Y&A, you most certainly are welcome to your opinion of the GOV or any other registry. But when you are broadcasting your opinion for others to read and using your experience as an example of why the GOV sucks, to put your opinion bluntly, don't you think that in fairness you should give the readers as many details as possible? You're welcome to your own interpretation of events, but it doesn't seem fair to extrapolate them, in public, to a reflection of an organization as a whole without giving other readers the facts so that they can come up with their OWN interpretation of events, which may or may not be the same as yours.

Geez, you know it would! http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/winkgrin.gif

Folks need to be aware though that if they start tossing around vague accusations and insinuations about being "mistreated" by GOV, that someone is going to notice. No matter how anyone feels about GOV or its "people", it is simply not fair to make a comment such as "I had a very negative phone call and will never and i repeate NEVER reg a foal with the GOV !!!!" when you don't even tell half the story of why you called GOV in the first place. Although I do not know all the details, I do know that YandA's issue is not a registry matter, and is instead a private dispute between her and another breeder. It is **not** GOV's problem to solve, and it is very unsportsmanlike for YandA to publicly condemn GOV because the registry won't jump in and help her settle the issue to her satisfaction. We've already got enough of that kind of stuff going on elsewhere. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

For dessert, A Russell Stover's Cookies and Cream Bunny...nice waxy texture, but reminiscent of childhood in a way that Godiva can never touch. Followed by pure yellow peeps and a Pepsi Slush.

I would like to know who owns the Maraschino Cherry Dark Chocolate studbar. Because I think it's an employee of the Marshmallow and Almond chocolate registry - which to me belches loud and clear of a conflict of interest. Okay, so one chocolate bar has nothing to do with the other but I think it only fair that all be disclosed - purely for my own self-interested dark chocolate purposes.

Spot, I think it's okay to have a chocolate bar on the South Beach, as long as you're not chasing it down with pasta.

Don't you all get it??!! that GOdiVA owns a stud??!!! why the heck do you think they have a horse--which is really their stallion (that is being subliminally advertised) on every single box! But what about that White chocolate Macadamia Nut? I heard that its pedigree contains 1/4 peanut butter fudge, and you know how the Marshmallow and Almond chocolate registry feel about accepting the peanut butter fudgies! First they took em, now they say they dont. If I put up enough of a fuss, perhaps they'll see things my white chocolate way.

Belgian chocolate???? You must be kidding, everyone knows that DUTCH chocolate is the best. Nothing even begins to compare to Dutch chocolate. Canadians can't seem to decide which chocolate they like best, Americans just seem to accept all kinds of chocolate. And both Americans and Canadians seem to have an obsession with chocolate with white designs on it. Don't you realize white chocolate designs do not make the chocolate.

Chocolate? This thread's about CHOCOLATE??? What a surprise! I couldn't imagine a GOV thread going on w/o moderating for 5 pages ... if anyone decides to go back to the original topic I'm a bit unhappy with the GOV right now too... AND the ISR/OLD NA. The papers of a 12 year old gelding I bred were stolen when our farm was robbed several years ago... I've been trying to get a duplicate. ISR/Old NA won't even respond to me; GOV responded and then disappeared... at least I can give very specific reasons for happily having moved all of my horses to RPSI http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Sorry about hijacking this thread, but the importing factor tempted me:

I have made the following obeservation: Swiss chocolate (the best in my eyes...) of the brand Lindt taste differently depending where bought. No kidding. That same brand and taste (?) bought in German shops is different from that bought directly in Switzerland. and the Airport chocolate of that same brand is again different, even if bought at Zurich Airport.

So how is a thorough evaluation and inspection of imported chocolate possible ?

Hmm Alexandra,

I have noticed that too. Perhaps it is manufactured under another factory and therefore only the mother factory can deliver the non plus ultra taste? I also think that the Swiss chocolate is the best in the world, there is nothing in Germany that can compete with them. I love Lindt and my favorite is black and white coffee chocolate and the famous Toblerone too. God, I wish I had some here now.....

I love milk chocolate, I am not too fond of "Mocca". But actually I import the Hershey chunks. Well at least I try. I tell everybody coming from the other side "please please bring me those hershey bars...". Mostly it works an they have room in the luggage. I recently attended a GOV inspection in Virginia and found the host to be so busy helping participants and guests, she could not present her horses, she had to hire a professional.
I found the GOV inspectors not to be as organized as I would have liked. I was transferring ownership of a horse and they did not have a proper receipt, so they wrote me a receipt on the back of a piece of paper and had to make change from their personal money. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif You would think they would have forms/receipts for transactions as much money as they take in from inspections, registrations, and transfers!
