PSA on trailer, dogs, and my crazy life!

I believe 100% in karma and I actually know what I did for this to happen.. but I won't post that here!

Today I decided for the first time since moving to my new farm to leave Jay at the farm and actually go ride Juice. I gave Jay some "Jesus Juice" and hoped he'd still be there when I got home. The farm right next to to mine has 3 horses so he had friends right over the fence line.

I loaded Juice and went to pick up my sisters horse and I also had my dog Bella who was going to be walked on the trail by my sisters non-horsey boyfriend.

After I picked up sister's horse we were driving to Fair Hill on a normal, 2 lane 45 mph road. I had the window cracked so Bella could poke her head out.

I called my other sister to ask her to check on Jay (flashes of him jumping the fence or having a heart attack were going through my brain.) She was in the process of telling me she couldn't see him in the field when I heard a ruckus in the back seat.

I look back and Bella is hanging by her stifles out the car window. :eek:

I freak out and start screaming at her to stop but she's too far gone, I can't slam on the breaks because I'm trailering 2 horses and going 45 mph.

She leaps out into on coming traffic and I pull over as fast as I can.

As soon as she sees me jump out of the car she runs toward me and I'm relived to see she hasn't gotten hit. I throw her in the car and she's bleeding ALL over the place.

I catch my breath and pull back onto the road since I was stopping traffic (thankfully sister was following me in her car and she knows not to tailgate a horse trailer) .

I pull back onto the road and with in 2 mins ANOTHER dog jumps out the window of a car going the opposite direction as me and almost gets hit. I slam the breaks again and pray the other dog doesn't get hit.

He was fine and got caught too.

I dropped the horses off at Fair Hill, took my sisters car and took Bella home.. no hike for her today!

I wash her paws and legs in Nolvasan scrub and wrapped her up. Other sister babysat her while I went back to Fair Hill with the horses.

Thankfully she's fine and besides road rash and a few nails ripped off I think she's going to be ok. I'm gonna get her some pain pills and SMZs tomorrow.

I had no idea she could squeeze through a crack in the window, she has a big pit bull head! I am going to buy a barrier and make her stay in the back from now on!

The best part about today will be when it's over!

That was a very close call, poor dog.:(

We had a norwegian elkhound, that did the same.:no:
We were barely moving thru the pasture, so she just bounced off and was not injured.:rolleyes:

Thanks! She's taking it easy but doesn't seem to be in pain, she's not even "lame" on the paws.

She didn't actually get hit and landed on her feet so I don't think there's any chance of internal bleeding or anything like that.

We have an emergency vet clinic 15mins away if she seems to get really sick.

Gosh, I am sure glad your dog is okay. This must've been the day from H-E-double hockey sticks all over the place. I've read of so many crazy mishaps today...and I had my own, as well!

I'm with you...can't wait to start fresh tomorrow!

and I do have to add that Jay was fine!

My sister didn't realize that my pasture when up and over a hill and he was standing on the other side staring at the horses next door.

The only good thing that came of today is that he was a big brave boy and survived being left at home! :lol:

my cousins dog did that years ago when they were driving past a cemetery....had to chase the (luckily unhurt) pooch amongst the headstones.

riight?!?! My sister thought maybe there was a deer carcass on the side of the road but how could they smell that going that fast :confused:

We were near the Tasty Kake factory.. that makes me want to jump out of the car sometimes! :lol:

And thank you.. she's a really sweet dog when she's not jumping out of cars. I adopted her from Animal Control (http://photos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-sf2p/v309/126/48/5705150/n5705150_39999898_9256.jpg) 2 summers ago and it's been an adventure ever since!

Wow! Glad she's okay and yes, she does look good in pink. Will be watching
how much I crack my windows when toting Jake, the Aussie, along. He can wiggle over and under a lot of stuff that look like "no way could he fit through
there."

One of my dogs did this too! I had the backseat windows cracked - and I think he accidentally hit the button to lower it - and seized the opportunity and leaped. I was going about 35MPH and in the end he was fine - luckily there was no oncoming traffic. He ran across the street behind me (the truck behind me also stopped) and started sniffing at what must have been a very interesting stop sign post. :yes:

So to extend your PSA one step further - now I always activate the electric window locks when my dogs are in the car. That way they can't accidentally lower the window themselves.

I had a freak accident a couple years back...one that still makes me shudder when I think what COULD have happened.

I was driving to the barn on a summer morning, was in rush hour traffic/four lane road. Windows down, dogs enjoying looking out each window. Guy in front of me hits the brakes going down a hill, I had to hit mine...and I see my dalmatian sailing out of the window onto the pavement. I was in such a panic. He was stunned and started running up an embankment. Luckily everyone was kind enough to just stop and let me get out of my car and call him and get him into the car.

I pulled into a shopping center...got out and checked him, he was bleeding, so I immediately called my vet's office and took him in. I was trying hard not to be hysterical...but I was shaking all the way to the office. Poor vet had to deal with a bawling pet owner as she looked him over and decided he was okay, just had "road rash".

He's fine, but I am very cautious now about windows down in the car.

I should have known! I had such a good day on my mare yesterday, I should have know that karmic energy would translate to some craziness within a few miles radius.

I'm kind of annoyed today because I forewent doing homework yesterday because it was supposed to rain today anyway....now no rain and I'm stuck in the house attempting to be responsible!

Well to make matters worse me and my sister ended up going on the trail ride (once I made sure Bella was ok) and got lost for 3 hours! I don't know HOW I always get lost in Fair Hill, even when I think i'm staying on the marked trails.

Thankfully we got to the parking lot right after the sun went down and we weren't roaming around in the dark for too long.

I routinely get lost in Fair Hill, then give her her head and homeward bound we go! I am actually quite amazed at her ability to find the trailer.

I had an escape artist. I adopted him when I was grooming in NY for the summer. His first escape was wiggling out of what I thought was a barely open car window as we drove up to the farm one early morning. He saw all his farmdog friends--and gone!

I had a half-day off that summer, and decided to do a small roadtrip of the area. I was crossing the Tappan Zee Bridge and stopped at the toll plaza, rolled my window down, and out he jumped into the busy traffic. I just about had a heart attack. I jumped out of the car and after many frantic attempts to catch him, caught him. Little bastard.

His ability though was the very reason I had him for almost 18 years. That summer, I was at the farm by myself while the rest of the crew was at a show for a couple of weeks. My mom came up to visit, and while we were out to dinner, he escaped from the house through an unbeknownst to me open cellar door.

We got home and the LB was gone. We had just moved into the house and didn't have phone service (no cell phones back then). I begged my mom to go next door and call the police--that's a whole other story unto itself. Very upscale neighborhood.

Someone had dropped the dog off at the police station, but the officers were very suspicious when we arrived. Seems a driver saw the LB jump out of a car window, picked him up, and took him to the police. The police thought that maybe we had thrown him out the window! But, when they brought him out, and saw me break down into a million tears, and Arrow so happy to see me, I guess they figured we wouldn't have thrown the dog out a moving car.

If we hadn't been so diligent in finding him that night, I'm not sure we ever would have. Needless to say, we always traveled with windows up in the car!

Oh my gosh! I've always thought that I was paranoid to worry about the dogs jumping out of the car window. They do crazy things sometimes though.
Glad your dog is okay. She looks like she had a hard day.

I had my Boston Terrier attempt this once, but luckily he got stuck when his "man part" hit the window and I was able to pull him back in through the crack. He was trying to jump out and attack a field full of Bison. That wouldn't have ended well for him. :(

these aren't FREAK ACCIDENTS. Big pet peeve of mine: NO dog should ever ride loose in a vehicle! incredibly dangerous! really stupid thing to do! Aside from jumping out, loose dog can jump on driver and cause an accident; if there is an accident or sudden stop, loose dog can go through windshield and get killed, etc. Dog in vehicle should be crated or seatbelted in or securely confined behind a grill. Period.

I grew up in Elkton, rode in Fair Hill since I started riding (around 8) but I have NO sense of direction.

I started hiking with my dog this summer and I would get SO lost. One time I lost my way on the yellow trail (Appleton South) and ended up in Sawmill field 4 hours later. :eek:
