so i was schooling a horse for a friend on Tuesday night and I went to jump a x-rail with him, and i noticed that "Tomahawk" has a habit where right before he's going to take a jump he whips his head up and charges the jump...does anyone have any suggestions on how to correct this?

It will depend on why he's doing that... if he's green and worried about the jump, keep things small and repeat your exercises a lot until he gets comfortable. If he's just being excessively enthusiastic, or this is a habit, try exercises such as cavaletti, gymnastics, and placing poles before fences. Also, make sure you are not being too restrictive with your hands before the fence and causing him to react that way.

Flat work and more flat work, umpteen transitions between gaits and within the gait, add in poles and tiny cavaletti, and insist that the tempo and rhythm stay the same, until ~you~ ask for a change.
