I have two maiden mares that I am looking to breed in the spring and a competent vet. I guess I am trying to decide about whether to try frozen on one of them and whether you guys would try it with a maiden or not.

Need more information than that. How old are the mares? Have you had a culture and cytology done? We certainly breed a lot of maiden mares with frozen semen, but we also try to make sure that they are young, healthy and reproductively sound - e.g., good external repro conformation, no windsucking, urine pooling, etc.

I was going to have a culture done next month prior to starting. They are coming 4 and coming 5. They are both lovely with no conformational issues...no wind sucking or bad vices either.

Make sure you have the cytology done as well as the culture.
I have had great luck with maiden mares and frozen but all mares were under 10yrs old and each caught first try.

Since you mentioned you had a competent vet also make sure the frozen is good/proven quality frozen. Some stallions don't freeze well!

Ditto, EquineReproduction.
Never had any problem getting a maiden settled with frozen...but the semen was extremely well- proven for high conception rates. Most important, the mares were excellent breeding candidates physiologically and confirmed so through proper repro exam/lab work pre-breeding.

I've done it successfully as well, but follow above mentioned testing of mare first.
