Does anyone know when the KWPN in Europe stopped branding foals? I'm wondering if my new gelding was branded as a foal or was a stallion prospect at one time? Thanks!

KWPN did not brand foals. Branding was only done at age three and over, if horse was accepted into studbook or deemed to be of studbook quality (in the case of geldings).

Foals have never been branded (NE and US.)
Star and above stallions were branded in NE prior to 9/00 (so, effectively, 99 was last year.)
Inspected stallions and geldings were, and still are, eligible for branding in US.
Imported stallions and geldings, with prior approval, can be branded at an inspection in the US.

Interesting! Thanks for the info. My guy is a 1997, so I guess its possible he was done in NE as a 3 year old before the cutoff. I doubt he was done here as he was imported quite a bit later.

Could be a star stallion branded as a two yr old in Nov, 1999 at the first ring. This in and of itself is an accomplishment. The papers will say "2bze" or "3bze" if he passed the second ring, or "angwe" (I have that abbreviation wrong, but you get the point) if he went further.

It's possible. He's a cool horse. I don't have his original papers, but am planning to try to get a duplicates. Apparently he did well in the Pavo Cup, but I don't know where to find old results and google didn't turn up anything for 2001 or 2002. Any idea?

I have a 1997 mare with a KWPN brand, born in the US. I am not sure when or how she got it, but the brand is there none the less! I believe she may have been imported in utero, but as per her papers, she was foaled at Iron Spring farm.

Mares three and above inspected in the US and awarded 2nd premium or above can be branded.
I saw the dam of your mare in her stall in Holland while in foal to your mare. January 1997.

Very interesting. I know she is STER, so perhaps that qualified her to be branded. I just wonder where it was done, when, and who did it, if they do not brand here in the USA!

You have it backwards. You still can choose to have your horse branded in the U.S. They don't brand in the Netherlands. So no big mystery, your mare was surely branded at the keuring she earned her ster predicate at when she was 3.
