View Full Version : *Fractured Hock-the saga continues........

I've had my OTTB since August 1st. I had her 2 weeks when she was severely kicked and ran through a gate. She has had her hind leg wrapped, no riding, and turn out in a small paddock for over a month. This was the first weekend where she actually looked like she was making progress.
Turned her out this morning and with in 10 minutes she was trotting around and slipped and her hind end fell out from under her. She continued prancing around and looked okay. I left for lunch and came back and she was 3 legged lame and trembling from head to toe. I called the vet out for an emergency visit and he did x-rays on her hock.
I just got a call with the results-
She pulled the ligaments from the bone in her hock and pulled off bone chips with it. In addition she fractured her hock. The vet said he has never seen anything like it and is going to send the pictures in to the vet school tomorrow to get their recommendation on how to proceed.
I've border line lost my sanity at this moment (just got off the phone) and really REALLY need some jingles and support for my little filly. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/cry.gif

ooooohhhhhh! What a nightmare! Do you have insurance? I know a woman who has a horse who fractured her hock. She survived, however she is no longer ridable. If your mare has good breeding she might be eligable to be a broodmare. Or, they might try something revolutionary and she may be as good as new.
Good luck, jingles. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/cry.gif

YoungFilly- I was going to get insurance on her, but the insurance company said they needed a bill of health from my vet saying she recovered from the first pasture attack before they would give me coverage. Since that injury occured pre-insurance company, they would not cover her. And the results of that have still not completely healed- it was a pretty nasty puncture wound that actually went to the bone.
The puncture was finally scabbing over (after over a month of proud flesh) but she still has some swelling from it (LH ankle).
Now, the fracture is her LH hock. The vet wrapped her whole LH, but after only a couple of hours yesterday had swollen from stifle to hoof.
I'm supposed to hear from the vet today, so I will let you know what he says I need to do. I don't think I got a wink of sleep last night. Waiting is the worst part.
I did get a phone call from the stable and they said she is still munching away contentedly on hay, so that makes me happy. I was afraid she would be in a lot of pain and go off her feed, etc etc.
Poor baby just turned 3 years old in May- hopefully that means she will heal faster (I know human kids bones heal faster than adults do).

Here's a fractured hock story with a happy ending to inspire you http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif
Friend's horse was kicking at another horse in the trailer on the way to a horse show in February of this year. Got the first horse off the trailer and noticed that this horse had a lot of blood and wouldn't put weight on his LH leg at all. Opened the divider to take him off and noticed where all the blood was coming from, promptly got the show vet, closed the divider up and got him to the closest horse hospital pronto (1.5 to 2 hour drive, poor horse). Prognosis was not good, he broke his hock!
Horse went into surgery pretty quickly and they removed half of the bone that you can feel (the round point - don't know the name except the 'hock bone' http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif). The next day, he could rest that leg on the ground. and within a few days was walking and trailering back home again.
The vet was still pessimistic about the prognosis but I'm happy to say that he's now been cleared to lunge (w/t/c) and they'll be able to ride him soon, too. He's not showing any lameness http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
He may never be a show hunter again or may just be low level (beginner/long stirrup) but no one really cares - we're all just glad he's had such a good outcome!
That being said, lots of jingles for your horse and hugs for you http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

jingles! jingles!
but on a good note, I knew of a pony who kicked a brick wall (long story why she did it) and cracked/fractured her hock. After many months she did get better, and was able to actually show and jump later. I don't know how bad the injury was. But I thought you'd like to know there is a possiblity for a good out come, (I know most people think broken leg = put down horse... but not so!)
But jingles anyways.. keep us updated!

Let's see. It happened in the early part of February and he's started back in w/t work on the line I want to say, in early July?
So it was a long time. He was in his stall for the first 5 weeks or so (had to close off his run) and then he could go in his run, and then he got lots of hand-walking. It has been a really long road but I think that taking it nice and slow really helped his outcome!
Keep us posted!

If anyone else has been through something like this I could really use some support. I just talked to my vet and he had a top surgeon look at her x-rays and said it's really bad. He suggested a cast for a month to let it stabilize and then surgery and a cast again- and gave that over a 50% failure rate. He said if they did surgery now, the leg would collapse and she would have to be put down. He said if she is not moved to a clinic and put in a cast, the hock will rupture and she will have to be put down. He said even with the cast their is an over 50% chance that the hock will rupture........sorry, I'm loosing it right now......I don't know what I will do if they say I need to have her put down- http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/cry.gif http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/cry.gif http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/cry.gif http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/cry.gif help, need words to help me regain sanity here

I concentrate on the issue, and concentrate on clearing my mind and letting peace come in....I visualize the stress melting off of me, going out through my feet, and peace coming in and covering me with a violet light. NO LOL I promise I"m not some weird California freak (I learned to do that in Texas, from an animal communicator, btw that's how to set up a communication opportunity).

Hang in there. This is a horrible situation and you seem to be doing the best you can. I do hate to say this but you should really have a heart to heart with the veterinarian about the long term prognosis here. Is there any way the fracture was related to the prior injury. What will be the return to function for this filly? Will she eventually be pain free? You seem to need to make a lot of sacrifices here to do this and I applaude you for your willingness to do so, many would not even consider it. But, make sure before you do this that you have a good understanding of what you are getting involved with. I wish you the best and my thoughts and prayers are with you and your girl. (((HUGS)))

Sep. 30, 2003, 09:05 AM
JB- I have had 3 opinions, all the same. A vet school, another vet, and a surgeon and they all said the same thing- basically her only chance is to hope the hard cast and month/two/three of rest will allow the hock to stabilize enough on it's own to be able to perform the surgery. Basically the further along she makes it the better her odds get.
Rubs Not Pats- I did have a heart to heart with him. I know this is going to set me back financially big time, but hopefully be something I can manage with a loan- I was serious about selling my car. I would rather give her every chance she has to pull through this and get rid of the Saturn. My vet is very good, and brutally blunt- so if he thought my best option for right now was to put her down he would have told me that. He did caution me that the odds are stacked against her, and that if the hock was to completely rupture it would most likely be within this first month, prior to even getting to the point of surgery, and that my only option would be to put her to sleep. So basically she is at her greatest and highest risk right now.
I also asked about pain, soundness level, pasture soundness (broodmare), riding, and he said if she makes it to the point of surgery and pulls through that- I should be able to ride her/compete her low level. The surgeon said the same.
For everyone else- please keep those jingles coming. I will keep everyone updated as this progresses.

Well, we get to bring her home from the clinic this weekend. She made it through 2 weeks in the hard cast and then broke it off. They did x-rays and said it looked surprisingly good and they think it's b/c she is so quiet and patient about the stall rest.
So bring her home, keep it wrapped and re-xray in 2 weeks to see if they need to do orthroscopic surgery to clean up any chips. I'm so happy right now, the diagnosis gets better everyday and she made it through the critical phase with flying colors- YEAH! Thanks to all for the jingles and support!

Great news, Okggo! FWIW, I just noticed your request for hock fracture stories and remembered an old polo pony I knew years ago. He went by the name of Scamp, which I'm sure he had been in his younger days. By the time I met him, he was only playing polo once in a while, and was mainly the favored trail pony of the farms "senior" owner.
Well, Scamp was kind of lame for a while, and no one took much notice. He continued to be turned out with the herd and go for intermittent hacks (he must have been 18 or 19 at the time). Then he seemed better and kept doing his thing for several more years, during which time he also took on responsibility for teaching his third generation how to ride.
Finally, one day at 23 or 24, Scamp decided it was time to retire and refused to let anyone put a saddle on him. He was perfectly happy to do anything else, just didn't want to be ridden. They called the vet out who did radiographs and lameness checks and etc. Turns out that bout of lameness Scamp had way back was a fractured hock, which was now quite healed, and the vet thought that acculmulated arthritis there and elsewhere was what made Scamp decide he was through working. He lived out his days, doing as he pleased and well loved.
I was never sure if, in Scamp's case, it was the continued moving around that kept him going. I am pretty sure that he would have let everyone know if he didn't want to!
Clearly, your mare has a more significant fracture, and I'm sure that the care you're giving her will result in much better function once she's healed, but it's nice to know that horses can and do recover from some of these injuries.
Continued jingles and good luck!

That is such great news! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I'm sure you are planning to, but be sure to follow the vet's instructions to the "tee." (Even if they seem a bit over cautious and become a pain in the rear.) Hope the next 2 weeks go well and she won't even need surgery to clean up chips!

Hanging in there right now. The hock is still not stable enough to operate- so they will re-check/x-ray in another 2-3 weeks and go from there. Definately in for the loooong haul. The biggest battle right now is keeping her quiet. She is quite fresh and hyper as can be. I can't imagine in 6 plus months where her little brain will be!!

Have you tried her on some kind of valerian/calming supplement? Hilton Herbs has a great product called Rest & Recover (or something like that) to help horses who are on stall rest. I found it most effective if you can dose at least 2x per day or even 3.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Good luck to you! You may want to ask the vet about giving her a shot of reserpine to keep her quiet. It worked wonders on our "layup" friend, and we didn't have to keep resedating everytime we handwalked, etc. One shot lasted about 6 - 8 weeks. You can't show on it, but it is great for layups. You have to be careful of the dose, as it causes diarrhea, etc. Anyway, ask your vet. Also, there is a site called www.imom.org (http://www.imom.org) that may be able to help you some with your vet bills. It's worth a look. Good luck to you! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Well, it has officially been over 2 months now and things are looking pretty good. She has calmed down a BUNCH and is seemingly content with being confined. Still have a full leg soft cast on, but I see progress http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Vet comes out next month to do more x-rays and make a final determination whether it will be 6 more months of stall rest or surgery!
But, after many conversations with friends and my vet- she is officially on the 2004 booking list to be bred!!! I'm so excited about that- as much as this injury sucked, I will now be getting a baby out of it!

onetempies- It was a tough decision, but I'm going with O'Leary's Irish Diamond. He has the bone, attitude, conformation, and performance record to make a great cross for my toothpick-boned mare. How did the colic surgery go? Scary stuff!
Thanks to everyone again for your interest in this, and for your kind posts!

Colic surgery for my mare... actually went quite well considering it was her second time. First was Feb. 2001 for a gas pocket and this last time was foaling complications (270 degree torsion of bowel, impaction, and gas pocket... 4.5 months post foaling). But she healed up much faster from this surgery (which was more involved) than the first time. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
I HOPE to be done of colic surgeries now! http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif
