I have a new TB mare that is due to foal Feb. 13. This is her first. She is unvaccinated and has not been wormed in years. What is the recommendation for worming and vaccinating a mare that is so far along? Also, what do you vaccinate the foal for when born? Does anyone use the Equine Coli Endotox and when do you worm?

I vaccinate the mare about a month out from foaling. I have a mare who will probably foal when yours is due, and she was vaccinated last week. For your mare, I would vaccinate her for the basics ASAP. I would worm her now with a mild wormer, ie, Panacur or another drug in that class, and then worm her within 12 hours post foaling with invermectrin. The foal needs to get immunity from the mare, and isn't vaccinated post foaling. An IgG should be done for the foal to determine the level of immunity from the mare. Do you have a vet you can consult about all this?

I do have a vet. Just always like to hear what everyone else does. Would you vaccinate her for rabies and west nile now also?

Rabies and WNV are both given to my mares in their pre-foaling shots.
