Actual genes and how they affect performance have been identified. The chief researcher is starting a business to use what they have learned to evaluate foals and also sires and dams.

I got this from a link on a Pedigree Query post by one of their genetics mavens.

Very cool! I'd be interested to see the spread of genes within the thoroughbred group. How do elite runners like Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra (to name a timely few) compare to the low-level runners? Or non-racing thoroughbreds? I wonder what their sample group of horses consisted of?

Sorry, this brings out the scientist in me :)
