Is there a protocol for when a vest/body protector should be replaced?

I have a Charles Owen that I love, but it's at least 8 years old now, maybe closer to 10. It's only hit the dirt once, but otherwise has been used (on average) 2x/ month for either schooling or showing. When not in use it lives in my trailer or truck, out of direct sun but definitely affected by temperature & humidity etc.

As I write all this out... I think I've convinced myself that it's probably time for an upgrade.

What sayeth COTH?

I was always told to replace helmets (unless you have a bad fall, of course) and safety vests every three years, as the technology gets better, and they tend to wear down from temp changes, etc. Not sure if that's true or not...

A helmet's life is 5 years - without a fall, as SuperEventer noted.

However - the materials used in helmets are very different from those used in vests.
