umm... well.. we just found out yesterday that the pony we bought 8 months ago, broke, and evented is PREGGERS! Not only preggers, but about to foal any day now. In the past few days she's gone from "she's a little tubby" to "She's gonna explode". All the signs showed up very suddenly and have progressed rapidly. What a shocker! None of us had any idea. But we're very excited, and mom is a great pony, so we're looking forward to meeting her new baby.

Here's momma schooling Training level water about a month ago (see, her baby is already an eventer)! Of course we felt terrible about riding and showing her when she was so pregnant (even though we didn't know it), but the vet said not to worry.. apparently it happens more than we think. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

I went out with my vet today, and had a blast. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gifAnd I told her about COTH. She may be joining the ranks or at least reading RIGHT NOW!

I agree, I am sick and tired of people whining about the cold!!
Hummm, I got my omnibus yesterday and I am having great fun planning my event season!
Today was the perfect tee shirt riding in the snow day! I also had fun watching my horse snooze in the snow (because I took his blankets off during turnout for the first time in two months).
Also, my mom is almost finished making my new show jacket, and with the money I saved by having her make one I bought a lovely new bridle. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Okay, I am REALLY supersticious, but this seems like a good cause...

Edgar wiped out in the indoor a week ago Tuesday, but he is BACK and going better than ever. We leave for Jim Graham's in one week and he looks like an eventing MONSTER! His walk pirouettes rock and we have even gotten a few clean changes (when I am NOT asking).

My taxes are almost done.

My husband is being supportive even though I am leaving him for 10 weeks. He is going to remodel my bathroom while I am gone. The cabinetry and tile is almost as old as I am.

My best friends are coming to VA CCI* to groom for me.

All the events I am going to this spring are new and I am moving up to Int and shaking in my boots.

I have actually gained weight, but expect to lose a lot once I get to Jim's and start training again, instead of sitting behind a desk. Nothing like cleaning stalls and packing and unpacking the horse trailer to take the weight off.

Thanks for the topic GWV - I am looking forward to the next 10 weeks with every fiber of my being.

My wish for everyone...Stay between the mane and the tail, dirty side down!

I had a really good ride yesterday on a mare I've just started riding recently (I do Equishare, halfway between schoolies and leasing). I'm going to jump her in a lesson with instructor #2 on Monday, and hopefully take her in a couple classes at the barn's mostly-internal hunter/jumper mini-show. This mare is petite and a little fussy with the bit (probably more me than her), but is generally sane and enjoyable on the flat. I can't wait to jump her! http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif I'm riding her again tomorrow, and hopefully jumping another steady-eddie, as my klutzy, exuberant project horse is off.

I will probably go watch/help instructor #1 at at least one event in April, and I hope to join the ranks of GWV's sometime this season.

The fact that the horses are shedding means that the days are much longer than in December and spring is on its way (albeit slowly). It has been in the 40's here in Maryland -- practically T-shirt weather!

Life is short; make fun of it.

Got my first event of the season a few weeks ago (The water obstacle had ICE in it!) My time novice, got 3rd (woo!) We're introducing pony to mr. shoulder-in which he finds rather easy actually, should help him get even lighter. Been focusing on stadium scince we're both crap at it. We're learning to land from a jump and sit back on our butts for another jump. Unlike usual where we land on our forhands and go willy nilly on the approach to the next jump and pray to god that you'll never lie again if you can just make it over this max. oxer lol. So I shooting for my next event in April at The Fork. I'm hoping to convice my parents to take me to Five Points later on this year. I'm so excited about this year. Maybe next year we'll be good to go for Training! And then... The Olympics! (I can dream can't I?

I haven't been riding much, but the weather has been GORGEOUS and i started going out every day and I am a much happier person, and I've been having such good rides, even on my crazy mare who is extremely fat and out of shape. I don't know about what events I am going to do yet, but I'm just happy to start on a good note, and feel encouraged to event this season! yay... so glad I've started really riding again and realizing the power of the horse!!!

Well, my board is already paid for March!

One of our cats, little miss Zen, was diabetic and has not needed insulin since November 13th. Cats are one of the few beings in which diabetes can be transient, and Zenny is blind, and the cutest kitty ever made. She deserves a great life!

My mare is SUPER happy at her new barn, she is fat and sassy and has that content look in her eyes.

I've been able to take time off between jobs and not worry about money (even though it's tight).

Yesterday the weather was almost 50 degrees, which made me hope that we are on the downside of winter.

I'm getting fairly excited about the junior scholarship that Deltawave and I (and others) are working on for this summer -- a free entry and stabling at a big HT.

Regardless of anything else that may (and knowing horses will) happen, the Spotted One went around a recent event like an old pro, even after almost 6 months off with pneumonia and recovery. Absolutely priceless.

Okay, I'll play!

Found a great equine dentist who has a partner who does Equine Touch, and are reasonably priced, who will come out to my place! Appointment set up for March 26th so I'll be starting the season without worrying about teethies and with a great support team to help them feel good. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Got my truck unstuck all by myself this morning - didn't even have to call my buddies with the backhoe! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The snow is down to 1 foot deep (from 2 feet deep). http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif

I am almost caught up on my bills, so I'll be starting the season in financial control and even have a lesson/entry fee budget! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I'll be getting back my full benefits starting April 1, no worrying about riding & competing without health insurance this season. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

All my horses are sound and still at least baseline fit, in spite of a nasty winter - at least we won't be starting from square one when things get better weatherwise! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I'm on track to run my first marathon on Mar 30th, something I've always wanted to do - I'm fit, sound and its going to *happen*!

This is so much fun!

--Several of my close friends came over last night and we just hung out all night-- no pressure of parties, going out, etc.

--It's raining like crazy here, and I took the opportunity to sleep in and lounge around all morning without feeling guilty!

--Spring break is next week, and my dad is letting me use frequent flyer points to go home. Yay for my second horse, my family, and my dogs!

--While I'm at home, I have a job interview! Yikes! May 18 and the real world will be here any minute!

--my mommy is coming to visit in less than a month!

Well even though I board at a barn with a huge heated indoor arena, having to tack up in -20 weather with wind yesterday at a show definetly got me wishing for summer.

My plans for the season are to start Pre-Training and move up to Training by season end on my TB mare. I have 9 events planned for us, from May-September (2 out of province).

My green 5 year old will start Snurf (2') and I'll hopefully have him going strong Starter (2'9") and maybe even move him up to Pre-Training. He'll only be doing 5 events this season.

As for new tack, I'm going to be getting my brand new custom fit Jaguar close contact in about April-May..I can't wait!

I also have a few clinics planned, I attended one with Chelan Kozak last month and have a jumper clinic with Marilyn Dixon (Irish SJ Team, some years ago) March 8-9. My mare will be off to train with Val Hellerud (Pan Am games competitor) for the last 2 weeks in march while I'm away, so hopefully I'll have super dressage horse for the spring. Then come May, I'll be doing an outdoor XC clinic with Chelan. I absolutely love her, shes so much fun and just a great teacher all around.

Anyways theres my good news. Oh right and I just got back from the first show of the year and I got a 4th and a 6th in my 3' jumper classes.

My good news lately:

Bonnie is turning out to be a little angel, with really nice movement and looks to be growing up sane, sound, and athletic...just what I wanted (right, Denny?--loved that article in "Eventing")

Gwen just knocks my socks off on a daily basis, and I'm positively DROOLING over show season! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Kelly is hanging out and enjoying semi-retirement. She might be a "DQ" this summer.

My little boy is healthy, happy and keeps us in stitches. The latest: we were watching horse racing on TV the other day and as the jockey trotted up on the winner standing in his stirrups, Evan (who is in a "scolding everybody" phase) stood up and yelled "SIT DOWN, MAN! You're gonna FALL OFF!" http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

It's going to be a wonderful spring!

I have an armload of "just starting eventing" students and horses to take to the unrecognized events.... several students doing recognized Novice, a couple students moving up to Training this season, one who just needs to get her Training qualifiers to go prelim (and then one *, this horse will ABSOLUTELY do it!). And all but one of my students (one of the Novice riders) STARTED eventing at my barn, and trained their own horses.

My stallion's arthritic hock is doing MUCH better with the new vet's injections, so I am going to start taking him to some unrecognized events and work him up from the bottom again..... we will try Prelim again one of these days if it will hold up!

And if that fails, I have my stallion's very fancy three-year-old daughter, who is gaily trotting 2' courses with one of my students after about ten rides, completely unconcerned by the weirdest-looking obstacles. Next year, look out!! She'll take up where daddy leaves off. The 2 year old is for sale (can't keep everyone), but I'm hoping to keep the 7 1/2 month old ISH filly, who is almost 14h already.

And I'm getting married in June, to my farrier :-) How much better can it GET?

OK--here's my happy Sunday news. I jumped today, for the first time since July, on my new horse Willie. Steering is an ongoing issue (he's way green), and we had a discussion about the application of the right leg, but to the jumps he is a heat seeking missle--point and shoot. I can honestly say I've never ridden a horse like this, and I had a BLAST.

And it didn't feel too, too out of it and rusty. A little bit, but not too bad.

Also, I've lost ten pounds, but I'm not going to reveal how many more I had to go, LOL. Let's say, I'm not half way to my goal yet, LOL.

So I'm smiling, despite the furstration fo the weather.

Boy do I need to do this!!!! Esp. since the freezing rain on Sunday turned the paddocks into a skating rink and the walk to the barn is truly dangerous. Don't know when I'll be able to turn the boys out - thank goodness for the indoor. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Good news is that before Christmas I lost 15 lbs. Probably gained a couple pounds back on a week long Carribean cruise. Lordy, cruise food is GREAT! http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif

Better news - I stopped smoking on the 27th of January. Anyone that knows me, knows I have a cigarette hanging out of my mouth just about all the time. I was a 2 pack/day smoker. I'm using Zyban to keep from killing people and Nicotrol Inhaler to get my nicotine fix but give up smoking. The interesting thing about the Nicotrol Inhaler is that they expect you to use between 6-16 cartridges/day to start with and I only used 4 cartridges the first 2 days! Now, hopefully I can stick with it since it's been a month!

My happy news is about my jumping lesson yesterday (first since February 5th!) - in which, for the first time in the 3 1/2 years we've been here, my trainer told me to SLOW Prozac Pony DOWN... Generally, it's "KICK HIM!! GET HIM MOVING!!!"

And even better, I wasn't scared that he was going too fast (although this was stadium, not x-c, where I'm still a weenie ;-)

And best of all, I'm scheduled for a semi-private lesson with Eric Smiley on Thursday.

I had some great rides this weekend. In particular, I had fun with one of the greenies. I was thrilled with his flat work on Saturday -- his balance and rhythm at the canter have come so far. Over fences on Sunday, he was a delight. Soft, eager, and absolutely cracking his back over every fence! It was all I could do to stay out of his way in the air, which says something for the strength of my position these days, but at least he was happy with the ride I gave him http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Beware - Mom's brag below:

Gaby and Bandit completed their first Prelim at Rocking Horse III this weekend and they both survived. Gaby's coach was happy, her coach's coach was happy, her mom (me) was happy, Bandit was pooped, but Gaby was disappointed. They had some control at speed issues and flew by a few fences on cross country, but they jumped them all the second time. So she had three runouts and a ton of time penalties, but they made it around safely (and it wasn't the easiest Prelim) and now they know what they need to work on.

Well, I haven't been riding, due to the 12" of crust still on the ground, so this will be OT http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

There was a gorgeous cardinal in the plum tree outside this morning, he was almost neon he was so vivid.

I bought feed and got it into the barn.

My horses are still sane, sound and happy, and one even started to shed this morning. The few times I've ridden them this winter they've been very good, and so all we'll need to do is get them fitter when springs finally arrives.

Since it is snowing again, the snow will look clean again (not that I'd complained about the dirty snow http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif). Also, my son figures it is a happy day since he has no school today!

I have a vest finally, so plan on going to one or two horse trials this year. Have lessons and clinics coming up.

Oh, and best of all, I didn't waste my money on shoes at the beginning of February. So I'm not picking out ice balls.

My barn roof is covered by insurance! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Oh yeah, I've lost 10 lbs since before Thanksgiving.

OK, let's see,

I lost about 12 pounds so all my breeches fit great.

I saw a bunch of blue birds the other day (in the snow) making spring plans.

I haven't ridden since before that BIG snow, so I've deluded myself into thinking that I'm so great and ready for Prelim (don't worry, first day back in the saddle will quell that thought.)

Hektor did the cutest thing the other day. (He's BORED). I was leading him and I wanted to see what he would do if I led him towards this skinny I built. He got ALL excited and flew right over it (with me holding the lead rope still, in the snow).

I do not smirk. But if I did, this would be a good opportunity. - Worf

Midweek. Hrmmm. Well. Almost finished the new rolltop this morning but ran out of stripped half-rounds...back to the sawmill. However it looks real cool. Replaced the gatepost that was leaning where the mares were cribbing (we have three cribbers pastured together), and ran electric on top of it... let's see 'em crib on THAT! Hah.

It's supposed to freezing rain this evening, high side is I might get some time off....

Ok, I'll join,
I had the best lesson yesterday! The best part of the lesson was getting to it because I had to walk my horse past a heating assembly which was being used to defrost the pipes under the isle way to the arena (1 huge heat blower, 1 small blower and a crinkly blue tarp she had to duck to get under). I am SOOOO proud of her! :-D

hmm. I thought I wouldn't have anything to contribute, but have come up with quite a long list:
my horse's puzzling lameness turned out to just be muscle strains from slipping around in the snow,
the snow appears to finally be melting,
I'm getting a big fat tax refund this year and I'm planning to blow the whole thing on whatever strikes my fancy, and
my trainer COMPLIMENTED me on my sitting trot on a really bouncy school horse yesterday!

Well, happy new, let's see...it snowed again last night, 5 inches, but about 3 inches melted off this afternoon -- I am getting big muscles from shoveling. The barefoot horses do fine in this weather, the snow therefore has saved us some farrier costs. I actually have two horses that have started shedding! Now that's a good sign. I have finally determined the proper layering technique for riding in a blizzard. My legs and seat have to be better because I ride in slippery nylon windpants on my oldest and slickest saddle, since most of the time the snow is blowing down my neck. The 30 meter circle we have tramped out in the snow is really teaching us how to be round! (If you are NOT round, you fall down!) I finally found the key to staying warm -- go back in the house! Good News...

hmm.. how about that the new footing is finally spread and paid for. We got rubber, and it is now nicely distributed on top of the sand/dirt mix. YAY! its nice and springy.

Good news #2..
I've got a full lease on my instructor's 8yo 17h TB, to do what I like with him under the condition that he gets RIDDEN and worked with. He's wasting away in his stall.. but the best part is that since its my instructor's horse, and she gets a knockoff on the board, I only pay $100 a month. WOOHOO!

thats all teh good news for now unless i go un-horse-related and that is OT. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Happy news on a rainy :-( Saturday evening in Arizona...

I had my first x-c lesson in AGES today (I can't even remember how long it's been, what with the rain and my nervousness about being run off with), and it was AWESOME! I even conquered the Coops of Doom, and finally managed to stop riding backwards to them in terror, so we had great jumps instead of chipping in. (Mind you, these Coops of Doom are 2'3" - 2'6" tops, but they are diagonally arranged on either side of a berm that looms maybe a foot and a half - very, very scary ;-)

Supposed to jump again tomorrow, but as it's raining again, that might not be possible. But at least I have today to look back on - and the lesson with Eric Smiley on Thursday: 48 degrees, rainy, muddy, and positively wonderful.

Went to Golden Retriever Adoption thing at Petsmart and looked at 2 dogs, 3 yr female (Chloe) and 4? yr male (Boomer). May get one - hopefully Chloe.

Rode my Dutch yesterday - superb canter departs and down transitions despite nasty ring. Pretty responsive, did some leg yeilds and attempted shoulder and hauches in and did well.

Rode trainers PSG horse hacking. Did a bunch of laterals - pirouettes, shoulders in, hauches in, leg yeilds, half pass, side pass - plus extending and collecting trots. Have never ridden such an advanced horse before - was a pleasure undersaddle but a dork/jerk in hand.

Have no school tomorrow! Am helping trainer ride horses - whee! Hope weather clears and that a certain boarder (notorious whiner) doesn't show up.

I rode the same greenie who was so athletic and correct that he almost jumped me loose last weekend -- and had an even better ride this weekend! He continued jumping fantastically, and I made a much better showing at staying with his efforts this weekend. Plus, he gave me such a great feeling when I jumped him over a skinny we have set up -- he just locked on and jumped beautifully out of stride, no spooking at the fence or hesitation at all.

But the best part of the weekend might have been hacking some of the other horses out on the roads! There's been too much snow and ice to get out of the indoor for weeks, but the (dirt) roads were perfect for trots this weekend, and I think the horses were as happy to be out in the fresh air and sunshine as we were! --Jess

I'm so glad to have something to contribute!
On Sunday, my greenie mare was hauled to a stable with a big, beautiful indoor arena. I was so excited I hardly noticed the 2 degree weather! She stepped off the trailer and into her new 12 by 16 stall just like she owned the place. No calling, no pacing...nothing. Yesterday her new trainer rode her for the first time and said she was perfect. She was amazed a youngster that hadn't been ridden since November would start back up so quietly...no bucks, spooks, or jigging. The icing on this cake, is that my wonderful husband hasn't complained about the cost once!
Who could ask for more?

So, I've just finished reading all of the happy posts and it was soooo nice, I just have to add to it.

My last lesson (which was the week of Blizzard Daniel) was fantastic. I was riding a "new" horse and my instructor had me jumping a cross rail (18"?) when I did that successfully I jumped a line, for the first time (since surgery last July). It was a GREAT lesson. When I was telling a friend later that afternoon she said what she finds amazing is that I keep improving and learning new things in each lesson. Considering I don't ride regularily (one of her horses has a bowed tendon and her hubby rides) and my lessons are anything but regular. So when (?) I can afford lessons and a horse I should be eventing in no time....

I can't wait... until then I will happily volunteer at my barns Horse Trials and Dressage shows.

My grapic design courses will be complete at the end of this semester and although I will still need to do the acedemics, I hope to get a job in the field (hopefully it will support my horse habit/addiction). My final project from last semester which was a brochure for my barns summer day camp went to the printers yesterday.

I am standing second in the Zone 1, Region 4 open rider standings for intercollegiate! I can't help but be a little proud of myself for being ahead of the "real" equitation riders that are in our region (the ones that actually show outside of IHSA). This is a big deal for me because I will gladly gallop around any prelim course in the country, but when it comes to an equitation class, I shake in my boots! I am in my third year of intercollegiate riding and let me tell you, I certainly now have respect for the good equitation riders. That's right, I said it, I truly admire those that can put in a quality equitation round because it is probably one of the hardest things I have ever tried to do. So, here I am, an eventer by day and a secret admirer of equitation riders on Saturdays (when we have our IHSA shows) http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Simon's response to the shockwave therapy on his hind suspensory has been so positive that the vet has improved his chances of a complete recovery to "excellent!" (We were struck down with the mysterious but oft seen "Cover Pony Curse.")

I was the substitute or "guest" teacher at my children's barn and had a blast! It's been decades since I worked with little kids. I'm also happy to report that there are still in this day and age grubby little barns with grubby little ponies with crackerjack kids and a wonderful riding teacher who isn't afraid to allow the kids to make mistakes. I thought they were extinct.

My happy Tuesday news...

Today was my first day back at class after spring break, and I was really dreading going to my afternoon seminar. There are only 10 of us, and the girl who usually sits next to me dies in a carwreck last week as she was leaving to go on break. Thank God I am a psych major and my professor was really great. We talked a lot about our memories of the girl who had died, and it ended up being a really positive experience, making me value how lucky I am to have so many great friends and family members.

As it was a sunny 60 degrees here in Charlotte, I went out to the barn and no one was there! I got to spend a little QT with my pony, who seemed to really miss me when I went home for 10 days.

Onward to the superficial part: The Kappa Alpha fraternity boys live right below me, and they are SO loud, all the time. As I was walking home from the library, a group of pledges swooped in and kidnapped all of them!!! I get a free night of restful sleep without drunken boys yelling outside my window! Hurrah!

The air of heaven is that which blows between a horse's ears.

BarbaraG -

Thanks for the cheers, and if you're available on April 13th, I could use some more. I've decided to do the final schooling HT of our season, after a long layoff from eventing competition following some nasty falls.

By the 13th, we'll be 3 hours behind you, so I'll probably be riding between around noon and 3-4 pm your time... I'll be listening for the cheers from Massachusetts!

And even though I've only ridden five times in three weeks, our first jumper show is this Sunday! WOOHOO! It's going to be fun...nice and casual....2'-6", 2'-9", and 3'-0"!

Wish us luck! Clue is...er...um...very excited (read - nutso!) to be jumping again!

Texas weather is really redeeming itself after a messy winter, and the past couple of weeks have been PERFECT. the sun is shining, and the temperature is perfect- perfect for riding in a t-shirt without getting hot at all! no more news besides that! i'm only doing 1 or 2 events this season, but this fall i'm going to get adventurous and try going to events i've never seen before. Hobo(my horse)'s neck is really starting to fill out, and i have so much confidence in him right now...

A full x-c lesson today - and it was awesome. We had several fences that we just flowed over "like buttah", and we did a couple fences that were new to me and that have been lurking in the Fear Corners of my mind for some time now.

Such a wonderful feeling.

My first jumping lesson on my mare after she has spent the winter with my trainer. She was so completely awesome -- has learned so much and really figured out where to put her feet and how to find a nice spot to a jump. she is fast becoming the perfect amateur horse I envisioned when I bought her. We are not quite at the close my eyes and hold on stage but not far off. Rose has it together -- just have to work on me but it's hard to be my usual chicken self when she is so brave and smart to the jumps!! Can't wait for our first event! OK, OK, ever since this thread has started I have superstitiously AVOIDED reading it.

My wonderful horse, who I have owned for 14 months, has been off or in rehab for 12.5 of those months. Surgery, colic, ligament tear, and most recently sore heels (which may have been behind the ligament tear).
Every time I carefully get him back up to basic fitness, something else happens.
Last week, we were 2/3 of the way through 3 shockwaves for heel soreness, to no avail. My beautiful, talented horse couldn't walk down the gentle slope in the parking lot without limping heavily.
The vet suggested we decide by today whether we should do the 3rd shockwave this week, or just give up and move on to injections (his last treatment option at present).

And you know what? Starting Sunday, he began to come around. He's walking like a normal horse. He's even trotting in the arena without limping.
I can't believe it, and I'm holding my breath to see if it lasts.

Anyway, I figured it was time to join the thread at last.

I grew up in NH - we used to go to Old Orchard Beach after Labor Day, for reasons unknown to me. Talk about COLD!!

After college, my husband and I were in Malaysia in the Peace Corps. I was so astounded to discover that the South China Sea isn't cold like the Atlantic off the coast of Maine!

But back on topic - more good news about jumping today. I really, really, really think I'm starting to get it. And our last 2 fences today were a 2'6" vertical / 3 strides / 2'9" oxer - and we nailed it. I know that's piddling for many people, but it's big for me!

In our lesson this evening, getting ready for a jumping derby on Sunday, we jumped out of the ring over a log, then went to a coop (I have MAJOR coop-phobia).

Prozac Pony and I had this discussion:

PP: What's that coop doing there?
RAR: Doesn't matter.
PP: It wasn't there yesterday.
RAR: Never mind.
PP: And why does it have standards? We're on the cross country course.
RAR: Just jump it.
PP: I don't want to.

I am finally able to put my OTSTB gelding back into work- no indoor at his barn and ground was way too hard to ride. Despite not having been ridden in 6mo, he was GREAT the first day (I did longe him a bit the day before), and have been out to ride him 2x more, he is SUCH a good boy. No spookiness even with the horse in the round pen next to the ring going ballistic, and on the longe picks up and HOLDS the canter like a real horse. Methinks he will be cantering under saddle soon! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

I was so looking forward to a cross country school this morning but the rain and threatened lightening made that seem a silly plan so we just did a jump lesson and my mare was so awesome! She was dead quiet and all I have to do is establish a rythm and steer and she takes care of the rest -- we even managed a bending line -- can't remember the last time I tried something like that. If I could ride, the mare could do anything. If it rains again on Thursday, Redlands will turn into our first cross country school of the year. Rose and I are happy and tired tonight -- she got her legs done up and a hot bran mash for supper.

Jezzy was 4th in her first Novice. Obedient but still a little tense in dressage, a little green in stadium but we made it through, AWESOME XC.. so awesome that I forgot it was Novice and the speed is really slow. I let her roll along and jump out of her natural pace, so we ended up coming in too early, but OH WELL. She was so amazing I didn't care.

WE SURVIVED!

Prozac Pony and I survived our first jumping show in about 15 months. No ribbons, but that wasn't the point. Survival was the point.

One rail (last fence in the 2'3" class - laziness on his part and probably a touch of inattentiveness on mine) and a total of three refusals (one my fault for giving him a ludicrous line to the last fence in the 2'6" jump-off; two my fault for letting him trundle along behind my leg in the 2'6" derby), but we did NOT get eliminated, I did NOT fall off, and I did NOT quit, even when we had to go out on cross country during the 2'6" derby, and I really, really, really, REALLY didn't want to.

And there seemed to be the faint sound of cheering emanating from the direction of Massachusetts... ;-)

The Oklahoma Eventers held their first one day schooling show at Woodlands just north of OKC. If the response is anything to go by, the future of eventing is assured with, if anything, more riders than they could cope with.
At times it was, literally, a three-ring circus with dressage, stadium & cross-country all going on at the same time. Largest class was "Green as Grass" with swarms of pony-clubbers from different barns enthusiastically tackling all the tests (youngest 5 years old!).

Much thanks to David & Laura Harris for hosting it and to Lynn Cherry for organizing it. Let's hope it's the first of many (my voice may hold up for another 8 hours)....

This is one of my trainer's lesson students with the schoolie she rides - their first show yesterday, and she came away with a ribbon.

Can you beat that grin?

Well, stepping on the scale this morning I finally noticed my running and gym routine have taken effect! Plus the extra riding! I knew my clothes were fitting better, but sometimes it means so much more to hear it from the scale!

Oh yeah - and our first jumper show of the season is this Sunday! Weather.com says 55 degrees and Sunny!!!! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Busy - yes. Bored - NEVER!

jennachica - My gym time is usually limited to about one hour (just not enough of them in a day!). Two of those days it takes me about 40 minutes to get down the line of nautilus (do this first!)...then a 20 minute speed run on the treadmill (about 6.8mph, I don't have long legs! = approx. 2.25 miles).

Three days I do 1/2 hour on the elliptical machine, and a 1/2 hour slower run (about 6.0mph, approx. 2.5 miles).

This has been about the past ten weeks now, and it seems to be helping immensely!!

Congrats on your horse!

My horse is going....NOVICE!! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

SUNSHINE! Glorious, warm, SUNSHINE! Yay...we finally got to go out and do a little galloping (VERY little, actually, but threw in our one single hill and called it a workout. Apparently Gwen is easy to get fit!)

A very memorable day for Bonnie...took her on her very first "solo" hack around the property. Only her second time riding outside since she was backed last fall, and for the greeniest of greenies she was just a trooper. Marched right over the log at the edge of the arnea, down the swale and up into the long grass...a mini XC school! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Had a few "WHATSTHAT?" moments (flock of birds, running kids, tractor) but nothing more than planted feet and a big snort and then on we went. I'm beginning to trust her more not to wig out and buck or bolt--a tough thing to do with an unpredictable baby--and that allows me to "under-react" to things, which is very important, I think! So far just one happy buck earlier this month and a couple of nervous wiggles...mostly just a good little girl! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

finally, some REAL happy news! i had a 2-day dressage clinic, and it went pretty good! my horse put up quite a fight though, and when the clinician got on, he made a few attempts on his life (bucking), but otherwise was good! of course, he was better today, being a little worn out- then again, that's what 30 minutes of galloping around avoiding being caught will do to you! And i am for sure competing this season! yay! and we're probably going to do novice! woo hoo! i'm so proud of boy, nobody told him that after a leisurely life growing up western, he'd turn into an eventer...

Actually, I do the scheduling for the show! I wanted to go really early and get it over with. Likewise, in stadium I was the second ride, and in x-c, I was the first (we had some stadium-only rounds and some dressage-only rounds).

And...

It was AWESOME!!!!!

We ended up 3rd out of 9 - dressage was what I felt to be one of our better tests, but we got a 48 (we're usually in the mid to low 40s). <shrug> Ah, well... that's dressage.

In stadium, we pulled one rail, but he was forward and listening to me, and I had a blast.

Cross country... wow. "The most fun you can have with your pants on!" as one of my fencing buddies used to say. He was SUCH a good boy. And I *RODE* (vs being a passenger). Nary a hesitation nor wiggle at anything. Came around some blind corners to discover groups of people - didn't bat an eye. Slowed down when I asked him to. In fact, we ended up with time penalties because I forgot to start my watch, and since I had no idea what our time was, I decided to control his speed after the last fence - just to see if I could - and I could. That, to me, was more important today than trying to see how fast we could go. I *know* he'll go fast - I needed to know that I could make him go more slowly.

Evidence once again of the efficacity of the GWV's cheers!

My Rose was wonderful at Redlands. It was her first event ever and my first such outing in 10 years. She got off the trailer looked around and put her head down to eat. She just plain came to do her job and looked at nothing. We were 7th after dressage (BNR) and that was after she lost a shoe 5 minutes before her test and there was no time to fix it. As the ground was soft and her feet are iron we just continued. She was very quiet and obedient but did wiggle a bit getting her balance in the deep spots as she had one shoe with studs and one barefoot -- she didn't like the feel -- can you blame her! I think we can do much better with both front shoes!

We got the shoe fixed in time for stadium. she has never seen a bunch of colored jumps, put a whole course together or jumped on grass. But although she looked at jumps it was more to figure out what to do rather than worried. We did have a rail -- totally pilot error as I got a little behind her balancing her in the deep piece of the course and never quite caught up so she pulled a rail behind. We also had tons of time faults as we went wide to have time to organize and trotted to get our leads etc. The stadium was a very nice, small and inviting course. Perfect introduction!!

Cross country was so much fun. We have not schooled cross country since October because the weather and the footing have been unuseable and then she only did two schools. I was only going to go if I really felt she would have fun but the course had really dried up and while they were a few jumps closer to max height than I had expected it was a very inviting, fair course. Anyway, she thought that was the best. She looked at the jumps only for information on where to put her feet and as long as my leg was there she was on her way. No jumping faults but again time faults as I was taking my time to let her figure it all out. She strutted out of there -- totally thrilled with herself.

We ended up ninth and I think with one more event to take our time and figure it all out we might be able to push a bit and get competitive. I was completely thrilled with her whole attitude -- she's only four and she just came out to figure out her job and get it done. I am so lucky to have her!!

This thread belongs back at the top... surely there must be some happy news out there, as we head into Easter weekend?

Let's see... I stayed on (mostly without stirrups) throughout my dressage lesson today, despite frequently feeling like Prozac Pony was plotting to unload me because he was so exceedingly vexed at having to be round - at the canter, no less! Poor Prozac Pony...

And tomorrow, we have a jumping lesson - not private, like we usually do, but with a couple fun friends from the barn.

Molly, where did you school yesterday? We went to Dillman's Saturday--the weather was PERFECT! We didn't get to do the scary table that I hate because Bill was resurfacing the ring right next to it, but from Gwen's back it no longer looks that big! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif The brushy-ditchy jump (your bogey fence) was yucky...I HATE THAT ONE...but we got over crookedly and I know what to do now. Apparently Gwen is "looky" at ditches but the good thing about her is that you can really ride her strongly without her getting flat or too fast. And she doesn't do ANYTHING dirty...you just have to (*gasp*) RIDE. What a concept! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Sam was good on Saturday - none of his stopping problems he's been displaying in stadium. He seemed to be really happy to be on a XC course - got kind of strong at times, but he listened well and I think he had a good time. Prozac Pony was swinging his back!

After several clueless weeks of trying to figure out why Prozac Pony's been so cranky when being saddled (especially with his dressage saddle), I tried switching to the next wider gullet in my Wintec Pro dressage saddle.

Mirabile dictu, much less crankiness, and SO MUCH more freedom of movement under saddle. We had suspension. We had swing. I finally felt what a leg yield is supposed to feel like.

Now, of course, I'm beating myself up for failing to think of this sooner.

But I think we're on the right track, finally... until the next time he changes shape, of course ;-)

1) Pounds lost: between 12-14, depending on my tempermental scale. BUT, i went shopping today to find some new clothes to wear to all of these graduation fucntions, and half them are a size smaller! One dress was even too big in the smaller size! HUrrah!

2) My anal professor who seems to have some sort of grudge against anything I do (for 2 semesters now) FINALLY gave me a decent grade on a test! Hurrah! I guess I finally earned it, but as they are essay tests and are completely subjective, he's always been extra harsh on me.

3) Here's the best part: My horse, who has been giving me ulcers lately with his bad behavior, was finally good yesterday! I cut his feed way back, changed his bit to one I think he finally likes, and have been taking major baby steps in anything I ask him to do. ANd he was wonderful!

SO now I'm in a good mood (well, at least for today http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif)

The air of heaven is that which blows between a horse's ears.

Ya-a-ay, Oskar! Keep up the good work! There's nothing like the thrill of a smaller size, unless it's a size smaller than that! Sounds like you're on a roll with the positive happenings...rock on, then!!

Feeling really good about eventing again!! I'm back on track!! Had a lesson with the trainer I trained with only briefly last year. Realized that I could gallop to fences and my horse would come right back to a working canter with just a shift of my weight back. It was so refreshing, since I had so much self doubt after being very inactive all winter. Horse trial May 4th!! I KNOW I can do it!! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I think that should be reworded to: Planning to make the judge take their eyes out watching my dressage test.

Happy friday news: Fat mare and I will be competeing at the NJ region PC dressage rally on the 31st (attempting to qualify for Nationals in Aug.).
Claudia is now sound after a nasty run- in with the fence (literally), so she will be put back into work soon, hopefully she will be doing a few jumper shows this season before any horse trials.

I can't believe I'm doing this...

I just mailed my entry for BN at the June Copper Meadows... gulp!

So, BarbaraG, what's your calendar look like for June 13-15? I'll be needing mega cheers from all directions as I tackle my first recognized HT in over a year and a half (and only my second recognized HT ever - the first ended with a resounding thud as I crashed into XC fence #10)

I am so happy!! I had my very first horse show with my 5 year old OTTB this weekend and we did so good!! He has only jumped around 10 times and done one cross country schooling. He placed 3rd after dressage and 5th overall (we had one refusal in stadium, but it was totally my fault, I didn't put him into the fence right). I am so happy and confident we are gonnma have a great year! Another show May 18th...we'll see how it goes!!

What? No good news for the past 3 days?

Prozac Pony and I have started getting in (better) shape for Copper Meadows. Mostly doing interval work on the x-c course, with (today) a few jumps interspersed.

Dressage has been coming along nicely, too <knock wood!>

And most of my barn mates left today for Galway - I'll miss them, but will be kept busy sending good vibes their way.

Mikey did a bounce yesterday. Like a pro. Last bounce we did was in a clinic at Ledyard last Spring. Jim Wofford, who has coached me for years, was somewhat appalled when I landed on my can at his feet and Mikey went on an unsupervised tour of the farm. Nothing like curing the EPSM to get good jumping! Yay Mike!

My happy thoughts for the year for me... My lease horse and I went cross country schooling yesterday and Elysian Hills and we had a BLAST. We were there with a few other people from my barn. After getting over a "scary" (simple log that was 2ft) jump we were having fun. Water was a blast but got soaking went when my horse decided pawing and splashing in it was more fun than trotting and cantering through. Then we saw some cows and acted like a fruitcake but we survived. We even did the bunker and had no problems. It is hard for me to believe that when I started leasing him 4 monthes ago, he could hardly jump a 2ft hunter fence and now we are gearing up for our first event! It is so exciting! Thanks for letting me get this out. I am just bursting at the seams because he was such a good boy!

What *IS* that on your head in that photo???? ;-)
Looks like you have some sort of bird or medium-sized rodent on your hat...

And some Happy News of my own - went on a trail ride yesterday (first in AGES), and Prozac Pony was a Very Good Boy. All we did was walk, because we were babysitting a 2-year-old filly (is she still a filly at that age?). The other babysitter was a 24-year-old QH gelding. The uncles took very good care of little April (who was also well-behaved).

We had a jumping lesson tonight with my friend who shows Novice, and Prozac Pony & I got over all the same fences she did.

Granted, the fences were lower than she usually schools over, because she's really schooling novice-to-training height, but several of them were legitimate novice fences.

I know this is "nothing" news for so many more advanced riders, but for this aging chicken, it's pretty dang happy news!
