I've had a bum shoulder lately (probably from over doing it at camp http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif)

Got a cortisone shot on last Monday and now it's all better! Back on the horse.

Gotta love sports medicine http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Had a great day at a schooling CT today! We did two dressage tests (Training 1 and Novice C), and 3 stadium rounds (2'6"). Training 1 started a little rough, but the score was 35.5 (whee! finally broke 40!). Novice C rode better, but because of there being more movements, it's score was only 40.5. Still, WHEE!!! We have been dangerously close to 50 for so long, this is GREAT! Those tests got us a 4th and a 6th out of about 15.
For the jumping, Bailey was wonderful. He had learned his job and just went and did it. Nice pace and pretty good spots to all of the jumps. We got a 1st, 2nd and 3rd for the jumping.
Finished Reserve in the BN division. Not too shabby! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

My trainer was "thrilled... just thrilled" with our jumping lesson this morning!

And Saturday, I'm going to jump with my buddy who's just coming back from a broken collarbone. She had her first jumping lesson last night, and it was awesome. Her horse is such a very good boy!

And Sunday, we're going on a trail ride.

Jul. 1, 2004, 09:12 PM
I had a nice lesson today. The static is cleared from my head and I begin to understand how to ask my heavy clunky draft cross to round and get under himself at the canter. That is my good news for the day.

As for this weekend...who is going to Great Meadows for the 4th? I will be there with a huge group from my barn.

another side note. this has got to win longest running post for the year at the end of the year. This post never leaves the first page!

I think I have a new jumping saddle (http://www.pbase.com/image/30834736.jpg)! Dover had a Passier Precision on sale in my size, and Patrick seems to wear a "medium" in everything, so I ordered it. Kind of hard to tell... slippery new leather, stirrup leathers wrapped in saran wrap, and me in breeches and socks-- no half chaps lest they mark it up. I think the flaps are too long, but hey, it's WAY better than the Wintec all purpose that I hate passionately, and since I got it on sale I won't lose too much if I re-sell it later. What I *really* want is an Albion Kontrol... we'll see how long I manage to hold out. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Plus, the boat is in the water!
It finally feels like summer!
6 more weeks of school and I'll grajumerate!

We jumped! And I have *proof* since I let my husband use my camera:

This was a trot fence with placing poles on either side to encourage a really round jump, so I can learn what that feels like and become comfortable with it. When we started cantering, the jumps came *way* down. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Very nifty, Wendy! Is that up at Frederic's new place, out amongst the DQ's?

(We jumped this morning, also... and it went very, very well, especially considering our recent forays into jumping. I have hope again...)

Yes, it is! (RAR is referring to my instructor's new location, which is at a facility that formerly housed _only_ dressage instructors. Five or six of them-- and to the best of my knowledge, there weren't any jumps on the property. So now there's a bunch of crazy eventers occupying the back barn, and one of the front fields has been turned into a cross country course.)

I went to my first show in about 50,000,000 years, and not only didn't fall off, but actually placed!!! I was consistently third!!! Plus, when I got home, my last pmu mare decided to have her filly! Another chestnut, with a blaze. Fastest birth I've ever seen, she spit that thing out in about 2 minutes, and baby was up and nursing in less than 10!!!I've named her Connie, in honour of Connie's amazing progress.

We're planning on the eventing camp in Flagstaff in 2 weeks (YAY!!!), but I don't know about the show itself. I'm on call for jury duty for 60 days beginning August 1 (yeah, that's lousy!), so I don't know about either Flagstaff or the September Copper Meadows.

With Alice running Flagstaff, I'm not sure I want that to be our first show, anyway - I know she won't have time to do much coaching. But a friend and I are thinking about trailering up anyway, just to hang out and school on Sunday.

So as of this writing, all of the pregnancies in my immediate life this year (2 equine, 1 human) have resulted in lovely, healthy babies. And that is very good news indeed.

Lets see, where do I begin? I began breaking my 4 yr. old stallion on Monday. He fell asleep while I was tacking him up for the first time in his life. Can't get any quieter than that! yesterday, we went for a mini hack. he seemed to enjoy it, he doesn't steer too well yet, but he tried his little heart out, and he knows the words "walk on" and whoa. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I'm getting a new project horse on Wednesday. I got a phone call this morning, ottb needs a new job, will I take her? you bet I will! Can't wait to see if the description matches the horse!

Well, my anatomy test went without a hitch this morning. Foxy's eye is no longer swollen and she has gone 4 days now in a fly mask and has not destroyed it (THANK GOD) http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif

KY was a BLAST this weekend, and I rode a really cool horse yesterday. I have a girl really interested in Foxy, so if all goes well when they come down to see her, hopefully I can get her sold and buy my new guy. (fingers crossed!!!) I rode one yesterday and he was really awesome. 8yr old OTTB, wins hunter shows every time out, solid novice, has the NICEST head set at ALL 3 GAITS (didn't know a horse would move on the bit at a walk http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif) Does water, ditches, the works. Never had a stop. TEDDY BEAR personality (just a puppy dog!). We'll see. Hopefully it will work out. Great asking price bc he needs glucosamine supplements while in reg work bc of slight Arthritis in front ankles from racing. Clean otherwise.

I'm excited to report that Cygnus and I had a fabulous time at Huntington on Sunday. Everyone had told me how beautiful it was and they were right. A very well run event! Cygnus spent the night at the historic Tunbridge Fairgrounds - really cool place. The neat lady I stayed with got up at 4:30 a.m. to make sure I had breakfast before my 8 a.m. dressage test! And of course, I had great friends surrounding me, helping and providing moral support.

The best part though is that although the cross-country course (novice) intimidated me during the course walk it rode beautifully. This was our first novice event at an unknown (i.e., never seen, never schooled) place. I now feel like I can truly call myself and my horse novice level competitors!

Closed on the sale of the old house yesterday.

Only ONE mortgage check to pay from now on.

This means that I can buy a new trailer to replace the one that they had to cut up at DRPC HT.

Jul. 20, 2004, 10:56 AM
What happened to your trailer at DRHPC? I must've missed that story http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Congrats on selling the house!!!

Jul. 20, 2004, 11:25 AM
DRPC HT trailer story.

I have an ancient (1975) but (was) sound "bumper pull" Gore trailer that I tow with a Ford Econoline van.

Gillian has a gooseneck that she tows with a pickup.

Gillian's truck broke down.

She had two horses (Abe and Salire) entered at BN on Saturday. I had Belle entereed at N on Sunday.

I lent her my van and trailer for Saturday.

Abe paniced at being left in the trailer by himself, reared up. got OVER the breast bar, and got his neck and one foot out the front door. Suspended by the breast bar just in front of his stifles.

Someone pulled the pins to drop the breast bar.

But then he was on the floor, on his side, jammed between the center posts and the side, still with his head and one leg out the door, and the other front leg folded VERY awkwardly under him. It was thought possible he had a broken neck and or broken leg.

They sedated him, but the only way they could get him out was to have Fairfax Rescue cut both center posts with "the jaws of life".

He has a couple of bad cuts that went through the skin and muscle sheath, but not through tendon or muscle. He has now recovered completely.

Unfortunately, the trailer hasn't.

I was planning to replace the trailer this year anyway, but couldn't do it until the old house was sold.

Janet -

What a story! You definitely deserve a new trailer after that fiasco! That happened to a horse at our barn a few years ago with no serious injuries. It's amazing - they can break a leg stepping in a hole but put them in a situation like that and they are completely fine!

Is Abe timid at all about getting in/out of the trailer now?

Wow, lots of good news, here! My new project horse that came in last night seems to have settled in nicely. Today, I'll longe her, and see what she's about! Plus, she needs a name, so some help would be good! Bay 3 yr. old filly, with dapples, and a round star, right in the middle of her forehead. 15.2+. Right off the track, but came with no name, no papers. Cute mover, I think she;s a nice event prospect!
Mares and foals all fine and healthy, no recent escapees! Thin project horses gaining weight, all is well! insurance adjuster coming to look at ceiling, car is running, all bills paid, no debt anywhere, life is good! Plus, it only seems to be raining at night! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif the gods must be happy and contented!

and now, a little poem, to brighten up your day:

Adam and Eve, who first began
the human race, the race of man,
Walked upright, had brains and thumbs
(we use them still, for doing sums.)
They named the beasts, invented clothes,
Left Eden, when the need arose.
The need arose in apple season.
It's called the Fall, for just that reason.

After another amazing lesson yesterday, I *almost* wished I had entered Flagstaff. Then I remembered that we have no dressage to speak of and my tall boots aren't completely broken in yet. Nevermind.

We went to a place we haven't been before, and Patrick stepped off the trailer, looked around, and promptly went to sleep. Tacked up, found a mounting block, went out and jumped everything we were asked to without any problems.

Apparently I just need to perfect the art of doing absolutely *nothing*-- the less I do, the better he goes. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I got some photos today from the mom of Prozac Pony's FLM (Favorite Little Munchkin) - the girl who is leasing him. Just had to share this one... doesn't this just pretty much sum up little girls and their horses?

(DISCLAIMER: She does *NOT* bop around the barn barefoot! They were just having fun taking photos.)

Aug. 19, 2004, 02:37 PM
Awww. She's the poster girl for the passion young girls (and some older ones, too) have for horses.

I haven't posted any good news for a while, so I thought it was time.

A couple of days ago, I put a saddle on my humungo 2 year old for the first time. Without incident, except he took a backward step when I tightened the girth. So I put a bridle on for the first time. He chomped a bit, but that was all. So I decided to take him out of his stall and lunge him. He was a perfect boy, even though I lunge him about once every two weeks. I'm thinking he's not going to be too hard to back.

And today one of my barnmates needed a horse to ride in a Medal class at an adjoining farm, so I lent her my event mare. Now, you have to understand that this mare hasn't been jumping much this summer because I'm just coming back to it, this woman hasn't jumped this horse since a lesson on her last year, and equitation is not this horse's usual job. Nonetheless, she placed 4th in each of two classes, and in neither case was that last. I'm tickled, and wondering why I want to sell her!

Mr. Blondie and I had a great jumping lesson today. We were doing a two-bounce grid, three strides to an oxer, and once he figured out the distance (and I stopped holding him back ;-) it was a blast. He was snapping his knees and his hind end, and giving me quite a loffly ride.

Finally, my trainer said to continue straight on after the grid (we'd been turning left or right) and go over the flower tubs (set into a break in the arena fence) and out onto the x-c course. Remember that Mr. Blondie, even though he had just moved up to Training with his previous owner, is only 7, and very much a Country Mouse in the Big City. He's never done this "jump out of the arena thing" before.

As we cantered the 3-4 strides to the fence, we had this conversation: "Umm.... Mom? Which way we goin'?" "Straight ahead." "Are ya SURE?!?!" "Yep." "Okaaaaaay." He's such a cutie. Also jumped back into the arena over a smallish log, with much less uncertainty.

Spike my project pony is doing really well! He's learned to go nicely on the longe line, and on Monday, I'll have a small rider put some weight on his back for the first time ever!!!Maybe even sit on him! Yesterday, he had his very first bath, and he stood like a soldier, while I sprayed him. What a star, and now his tail is gleaming white! I used Avon silver lights shampoo, wow, does it ever do a good job!!!

That's Spike, in his ungroomed state, before I started doing anything at all with him.

Aug. 23, 2004, 01:44 PM
Let's see... the last time we did course work in a lesson, Patrick was running through my hands, and I have multiple pictures of him sprawled out over jumps with me hanging on his face. (Under orders to HOLD all the way to the base and not release until he decided to listen.)

Six weeks and one figure eight noseband later... he will canter down looooong lines (12 and 8 strides) and around sweeping turns without morphing into a freight train. He even broke to a trot a few times when I took too firm a hold without enough leg. (Because, well, he doesn't typically NEED any leg!)

He still needs a firmer contact than I would like, especially for those last three strides where he'd like to gallop at them. But what a difference from early July! A few more weeks and hopefully we won't embarrass ourselves at the schooling show. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I think Foxy has a new home. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/sadsmile.gif She is leaving on Sept. 9th with a young girl who's only ambition in eventing is to maybe do a BN before college (she's in 9th grade). I think it is perfect for Foxy. There is a 2 week buy back agreement, but hopefully it will all work out. I mean, they have already bought $10,000 worth of insurance on her and a new bridle, halter, sheet cooler, and girth in her sizes... That's a good sign right?

So keep your fingers crossed that by the end of Sept. I am OFFICIALLY horse shopping!

Another lesson with a gridline... four verticals this time, no oxer. I dropped out when he raised it one last time and invited anyone who wanted to do it again to go through.

No wonder, because it was almost 3'6" at that point! Which means that we did it at close to 3'3" before I chickened out. Patrick would have gone, of course, but I'm getting tossed around in a Wintec A/P that just isn't suitable for jumping that high.

RAR does the Happy Dance, realizing that Wendy & Patrick will be long past competing at BN this season, thereby staying well out of her way! ;-)

Congrats on a great lesson. We did grids yesterday, too... bounce / one-stride / one-stride / bounce, with placement rails at both ends. The second fence in from one of the ends was an oxer, and we did the grid from both directions. The fences were low (2' - possibly 2'3"), but Mr. Blondie did NOT much care for having to shorten to get the bounce and clear the exit placement rail after those one-strides.

Took Prozac Pony & his munchkin on their first trail ride together today. All was pretty much uneventful until I got the brilliant idea to cut through the woods, got us into a dead-end, and then Mr. Blondie heard The Hounds of Hell in the underbrush and did one of his sideways disapparations. Fortunately, I stayed on this time.

Then, as we were heading back, SOMETHING rustled in the bushes at the side of the trail, and Prozac Pony took off in one direction, with Mr. Blondie skittering away in the opposite direction. I'm trying to keep an eye on them, hoping they're okay, while trying to reel in my reins. I thought it was birds flying up out of the bushes (although in retrospect, I saw no birds); La Munchkin thought it was a rattlesnake.

Whatever it was, The Boys were having no part of it.

Uh huh... RIGHT. One big jump at the end of a gridline where the distances are all figured out for you does not a stadium course make!! (Nor a dressage test... do-it-yourself dressage isn't going so well.) And nobody said it was pretty, just that I stayed on. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I watched the video and could see that something special I would have never noticed without her help and her video. The power of these forums to bring people together http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

And yes, he's four, I even ran his tattoo # because he does look (and act) older. He was born February 2, 2000, so he will be five early next year.

PP - Vegas is adorable.
I went and looked at a 4yo chestnut yesterday....but he is just a bit too high strung for me-who-is-used-to-QH-ponies! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Going to try another today!

Sep. 2, 2004, 09:49 PM
CluesGirl, what's the verdict on the one you tried?

Tee hee... I'm just full of surprises. I called today to find out my lesson time and asked if it was okay go out on the galloping track before my lesson. There was a moment of shocked silence before the "ABSOLUTELY!" came back.

(Historically I have preferred to stay in the arena with the nice safe fence around it. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Volunteering to go out into the wide open spaces all alone is a pretty big step for me.)

Sep. 3, 2004, 09:34 AM
First of all, my Happy News is that
Only took me 9.5 years to get the old double bachelors, but it's OVER!! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Wendy - the guy I tried was pretty cute, but he had HORRIBLE barn manners. Grinding teeth, baring teeth, kicked at the trainer, took two people to get him saddled, an all-around nightmare. The trainer was a bit embarrassed....on to the next one, a grey 5yo next week.

Wow cluesgirl, that is a huge accomplishment! Congratulations!

Good luck with the horse hunt, he or she is out there for you http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Sep. 3, 2004, 10:55 AM
Congratulations, CluesGirl! I'm 15 years out of high school and STILL NOT DONE with a four year degree. (Okay, so I have plenty of credits, just not the *right* ones since I changed majors.) Moral of this story: Just get it over with while you're young and immortal and can live on 3.5 hours of sleep per night.

Keep looking for that new pony! I tried about one per week until Patrick found me.

Sep. 3, 2004, 04:10 PM
I am confident that it will happen, and thanks for the congrats! 3.5 hours??? Now here I was thinking that 4 was normal! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

In fact, I am SLOWLY starting the search since our rental property / investment is 50% complete. Once our rental property is complete and we have it rented out, CluesGirl will begin looking for the perfect fixer-upper on 3 to 4 acres where her pon-pones can live at home. The fiance already said he will do morning feeds and noontime mucking while CluesGirls is at her "real job". How can it be more perfect than that? http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Of course if the stellar deal comes along, I can pay board until THE FARM comes down the pike! It is just so exciting looking for prospects, although after "talking" to Deltawave, I am convinced that there is an "old" horse out there looking for that forever home with an occasional Training run! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

So, WendyWDS - how was the lesson today? Did you venture out on the galloping track, or did the weather keep you close to home?

We started out in the ring, then went out back. Mr. Blondie was having WAY too much fun out there. We had a bit of a rodeo moment after the "bicycle rack" - a string of a dozen or so good bucks after landing. Sigh...

He's only seven (I keep telling myself)...

Sep. 4, 2004, 09:56 PM
Yes, we did! I was happy with that part but disappointed with the lesson part-- I wasn't expecting an XC lesson and didn't bring enough courage to do both. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif Check your PT's if you want the whole story, I'm still mad at myself.

I will take a sixth place ribbon..better than a stick in the eye any day. I won it at the KY Classic inspite of the heat, the number of horses, riding stadium in the indoor arena, and the fact that I am fat and out of shape. Yea for me and my horsie.

Sep. 8, 2004, 10:36 AM
I have had terrible horse luck for the last 1.5 years.
I bought yet another unbroke baby to start with and after owning him just one week he injured himself. stall bound for 2 months.

I sat on him for the first time yesturday! He's pretty dorky, and with the cold front very sassy but I have never been so happy to hault in the middle of the arena as everyone goes around...sitting on my baby boy!!

my happy news for the day is that the vet just left, and my big TB mare, Macassa, is still in foal (bred to A Fine Romance). This baby will be a full brother/sister to My Romance, who just competed at his first Advanced HT, and had double clears (with 8's and 9's for his trot).. I never count on ANYTHING when it comes to horse breeding - but at least on this day, we are still preggers! Macassa's 2003 colt, True Romance is growing like stinkweed, and her 2004 filly, Tuscan Romance is just gorgeous...
pouring rain, really windy and quite cold here... but at least it ain't snow! (yet!)

Sep. 8, 2004, 05:10 PM
thank you for asking, Janet, but not yet...still sporting a big ugly freakin' neck brace, not allowed to do anything around the barn or with the horses, and CAN'T DRIVE!! arrrghh

Kidding...I have put off the search until the Spring due to a couple of unfortunate financial flub-ups, building inspector is being a hard-apple on our rental property. There goes the hard-saved horse fund for now!

That's OK - will be spending the fall getting myself back into good riding shape so then I will be physically ready for my new OTTB! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Sep. 9, 2004, 05:37 AM
WEll, I may not be convinced right now that this is good news considering all the tears I've cried the past few days, but Foxy is leaving today. She vetted clean yesterday (with the help of a little bit of ace http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif) and will leave for florida at 10:00 right after my Physics test. I'm sad, but really excited too. If this goes well I'll be shopping and I can't tell you how excited I am about THAT!!! i will miss Foxy but I hope they don't bring her back!!! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif Anyway, IT's done (hopefully) and all she has to do is not KILL the girl in FL in teh next 2 weeks and I'm home free. You guys need Miraculous Dirt-Vanishing Palominos! Mr. Blondie hardly ever looks dirty (unless he's been sleeping in his manure), but when the saddle pad comes off, it's clear that the dirt was there all along.

We were hoping to move up to training before the season end but I think were out of time, and since we got a team together for Walker, I didn't want to do training. I'm doing 'The Ride for a Cure' at Quiet Corners the weekend of UNH so I won't be there. But I bet I'll see you at KO in the spring ... kind of scary I'm already thinking about spring http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I'll have to update my Webshots pics and send to a message so you can see the guys. Buckskin really is the ONLY practical colour for a horse! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Steve is turning into quite the little jumper. I braided him for a photo session today, and put him on the longe line, just for the sake of getting a trot photo of him. He's never seen a longe line before. That didn't prevent him from going out to the end of the line, and trotting perfect circles at a steady trot until I asked him to stop!! Of course, after I turned him out, in the front field, he walked to the fence, and continued over it in a straight line. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/sigh.gif http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Spike the pony, who has been ridden 5 times in the last 4 weeks, was also a star, today. I had a friend come up for a visit, she got on, and rode around, and then had a lovely trot on him. His first trot, under saddle, with a rider. He goes around like an old school pony, not like a just got backed, and this is my 6th ride ever pony. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Plus, I got taken out for lunch! All in all, I'ld say a pretty happy day!

Sep. 11, 2004, 01:58 PM
I took Mr. Brain (my 4yo) to his first jumper show today. Just puddle jumpers (2'3") and novice jumpers (2'6"). Except in the last class, we just trotted around, so we were slowest of the clear rounds, but we cleared everything. ANd in the third class he figured out how to canter the course. Got ribbone in all 3 classes.

Sep. 11, 2004, 05:11 PM
Today's lesson was... course work. Patrick and I are going to go do Novice C and play in the hunter ring at a local show next week while my instructor is at Copper Meadows.

The lesson went really well, he no longer runs at the fences, so I can soften to them without fear of him taking off from wherever I let go. (Could it be he no longer runs at them because I no longer pull? Naaahhh...) And he listens afterwards when I ask him to settle or fix his lead.

Of course towards the end my instructor raised the fences again... I was half hoping he'd say I could stay on my prior round, which was quite good, but I knew he wouldn't. So while he was going around raising them I had a little talk with myself. "Self, you know he's going to ask you to jump these, and you KNOW there's no way he's going to let you out of at least TRYING, so you might as well skip trying to talk him out of it and just go jump them."

So we did. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

And the only thing I pulled him out of was the fan jump, once-- I used to do it at least once with every oxer on the course. Progress, now it takes THREE rails to scare me, not just two.

Sep. 11, 2004, 05:25 PM
congratulations wendy http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif you know, its verticals that are way more oogey to me than oxers, fans, etc - have fun at the hunter show.

And his happy, head-bouncing, LIFE IS GREAT attitude. He was so sad when he was lame! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Still likely that there will be no more jumping, but as long as he's happy again, who cares! Let's just hope he stays happy when he hears that he will be turning into a dressage-only-pony!

Cluesgirl, That really is happy news! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
I went to Checkmate for the lower level event yesterday, just to watch. Walked the training course twice, and saw each jump ridden by a different horse. Then, I walked the pre-training, and the entry level courses, as well. Mary, my friend and I had a great day, got nice and tired, and can't wait for next year, to be out there on course ourselves. and I guess I should thank the mares for making me do all that walking, to get me fit enough to walk three courses, over hill and dale, yesterday! Because today, I'm not tired at all. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Sep. 13, 2004, 06:01 AM
My happy news....I ended on my dressage score at KOF in the novice division. We just started eventing for real last season and we love it. I am now hoping to move up to training next year. My horse was a real pro out there and it felt great! My horse and I are recycled hunters, so I am really proud of both of us. I love King Oak, they do the best job. The course has a great flow. All the novice questions are out there but confidence boosters are too.

He actually did the "First Timers" (18") at Foxcroft this spring.

My new trailer is supposed to arrive by October 8. If he isn't sold before then, I am planning to take him Beginner Novice at the fall Foxcroft, Oct 23-24. Our weakest point just now is the dressage test. Once he is established in a gait he is OK, but our canter transitions are really not "fit to be seen" by a dressage judge yet.

He was perfect. I was running late, he stepped off the trailer, looked around, and went to sleep while I threw his dressage tack on. Went over to the warmup, trotted around, tried both canter leads, and into the ring for a 35.5 from an R-licensed Dressage judge who's known to be pretty tough. And that's letting him go around with his nose poked out-- he got rewarded for being forward, straight, and willing.

Then we made a clean sweep of the 2'6-2'9" jumpers and took home the championship ribbon... by virtue of being the only judged entry. There were two other people there, just schooling. (The hunter ring was *packed*-- I was done by 10 AM and they were still doing crossrails!)

Well It's not all horse related, but some of it is... lets see...

-The past 2 days have been BEAUTIFUL here! I wish I had a horse to ride because the weather is absolutely perfect!

-I just got a paycheck twice what I usually get for working overtime during the hurricane! (can we say tack store?)

-My boyfriend took me RING shopping Sunday. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Just for a promise ring...we both are going to finish school before getting married. But he told the lady when she showed me what most people use for promise rings that "my girl needs something bigger...can we look at the smaller end of the engagement rings?" http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif So I picked the one I want, a 3 stone 1 ct diamond ring. YAY! It'll have to go in regularly for cleanings after going to the barn so much though. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

-I still haven't heard from Foxy's new mom in about a week, but the trial is up Sunday, and I'm crossing my fingers. I'm going to KY October 1st for the weekend. Gonna go to Jumpstart and look at some horses if all works out.

-Jump judging at Poplar on sunday! if you're going, look for me!

-And I HAVE to mention, #17 Auburn beat #4 LSU this past weekend 10-9 in the last minutes of the game. We are now ranked ninth in the country. War Eagle!

Sep. 25, 2004, 04:38 PM
No one has been happy for FOUR DAYS?!

We had another really good lesson today! I learned that I'm no long afraid to canter 3' oxers (http://www.pbase.com/wendysmoak/image/34236070) , but the pictures show that we probably shouldn't do it in public just yet. (Jumping ahead, no release... poor pony!)

And, it seems... the honeymoon is over. When I got Patrick, my confidence level was still low, so I was allowed to get away with pretty much anything. My favorite trick is circling if I don't like something about a particular jump, his pace, the line, what color it is, whatever.

Today was a rather rude awakening. Now if I do it, not only do I have to go back and start the whole course over... there's a FINE involved! A lobster dinner for my instructor. This could get expensive...

Next week is schooling XC at Grass Ridge, then one more lesson and then back to Sonoita for the event.

Hey there! Some good news in addition to this fabulous weather (here in New England, we have to cherish these lovely days because you-know-what is on the way).

Mr. Frugal actually asked to go on a hack with me yesterday, and we had a lovely ride up on an undeveloped 600 acre property across the street. The air was so clear we could see way up the coast to Maine, and there was just a hint of color in the trees. This time of year, the ocean looks very blue, and the cool Canadian breeze keeps all the bugs away. It was lovely!

Then later in the afternoon, he helped me back our 2 yo colt. Now calm down: he's a very mature fellow, about 16.2, and I was only on him for 5 minutes. We'll do 4 more 5 minute sessions before the end of October, and that will be that. But the colt's walk feels SPECTACULAR! Just like his late mother's.

A lovely weekend. Hope you all had good weekends too, and that those in the path of the hurricane fared well.

Only indirectly eventing related (except as inspiration for those who discover that a beloved horse doesn't "do" cross country above Novice consistently).

But Music and I (18 and 50 respectively) did our first canter half pirouettes yesterday, and my instructor said one of them would have been a 6 (and the other would have been a 4 or 5, depending on how generous the judge was being) in a test!

Neat! I got a taste of upper level dressage when I tried a 3rd/4th level horse during The Search. Of course I had no idea what I was doing... but it was FUN!

Mr. Blondie can do half- and full-canter pirouettes, but he requires the assistance of a garbage truck or school bus!

ROTFLMAO... Ummmm... Wendy.

I do believe that when a horse is jumping, at some point, all four feet have to leave the ground AT THE SAME TIME.

I bet Patrick and Prozac Pony were separated at birth!

Happy news for me....and Ms Priss- her foal was born last evening, at 7:45- both are doing well, and we got the color from the stallion that we thought would be nice http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

For those intersted, Priss (babamoiselle- I did NOT name her!) is by Babamist, and out of Kept Woman, and I bred her to Kevin P's stallion, Indian Art- who is just such a nice, and kind guy...plus has his share of wins a prelim and is going I now.

Yes, a very late foal, but I was sick last year, as was Priss, so when the MD's and vets all said..."A year off!" We said...why not? She took easily and there you are....342 days later, a pretty pinto guy, with correct legs *at least as far as we can tell now! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif * and a happy mom.

How polite of her to foal in the evening? We are calling him Ranger at this point in time...(anyone read the Stephanie Plum novels??? http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I have no idea how to post anything picture wise. carovet is trying to help...I sent her one so we can see.

He is actually almost ALL white...has a black head, with a white blaze that is cute...and he has stifle patches, and a couple of freckles on his back. His chest is brown, and there are a couple of odd patches here and there. There is a lot *read get used to spending days cleaning him* of white...much more then I ever thought we would get. When I get the picture thing figured out...let you know. WendyWDS- I have seen yours...hoew'd ya do that??? http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/winkgrin.gif

Wendy WDS - what did you think of Pilates?
My happy news is that I've done three equipment classes now, and I think it is REALLY going to help me with my riding!

And more Happy News, my neighbor directly across the street is building a 6-stall barn (and she only has two horses....) with a heated tack room and a 100 X 80 outdoor ring!!!!!!!!!! (until she can talk hubby into building her an indoor, he is a contractor and they have 5 acres!)

Thanks to Terry, I have 2 pictures of Ranger on her web site. Rabger Pictures (http://community.webshots.com/album/193407608TyULdR)

New to the post but I have some good news!

First of all, I got an amazing opportunity to work at a nice barn that is like 2 mins from me (that I never knew was there!) thanks to working at a tack store and getting to meet a lot of people! I unfortunately have to quit my job at the tack store b/c its too far away and they cut my hours. But I now am going to be working at this great barn mucking stalls for free board and then I will also be grooming and lungeing and cooling out horses for pay, with free daily lessons, and just getting to experience some great horses and really learn a LOT! Very cool! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Secondly, I have an offer on my greenie baby. Hopefully she'll come up though b/c I cannot accept her offer. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif But I also have a wonderful friend of mine interested in him and I think they would make the *perfect* match. Hopefully it works out and maybe I can get him a great home and her a great horse?

Lastly, WE CLOSED ON THE PROPERTY! My dream of owning property and keeping my horses at home is slowly becoming reality. My parents, whom are NOT horse people, purchased 3 acres and we are in the process of building a house, all b/c of me. My parents are the best and I just cant believe its all happening!

My happy news is that Tux, the wonder horse, just added one more skill set to his resume; Equitation horse!

A student of a friend needed a horse for an upcoming equitation final, so I'm loaning her Tux. I just got home from watching them together in a lesson. She was so nervous and he just quietly packed around. Bending lines, rollback turns, no problem! I'm so proud http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif.

Not bad for a Western Pleasure horse turned Show Hunter turned Eventer turned Equitation horse!!!!

What a great day! It barely hit 90, and we went XC schooling in preparation for a horse trial in two weeks.

Here we are warming up over a log (http://www.pbase.com/wendysmoak/image/34551761). Then we jumped another log (http://www.pbase.com/wendysmoak/image/34551774) and a log going uphill (http://www.pbase.com/wendysmoak/image/34551776) and yet another log (http://www.pbase.com/wendysmoak/image/34551778)! We also cantered through the water, stepped over a log with a drop landing, jumped the BN and N ditches and stepped off of a small bank.

This is the first time ever that I've looked forward to riding XC... Which is not to say I didn't have a few "moments" while we were out there, but nothing major. And I only owe my instructor *one* lobster dinner for pulling Patrick out of a downhill approach to one fence. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

This Thursday for the first time EVER I worked as a volunteer at horse trials. Morven Park CCI* and Advanced HT! Was terriffic fun and I think I'm hooked on the volunteering thing. I love giving back to a sport that's been so fun for me. Will help out another HT later on in the month. I was thinking of setting the goal of volunteering for the same number of events that I compeate in each year. ie compeate at 4, volunteer at 4. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I had a very exciting XC school today. I am taking my horse to her first Training level (billed as an easy "move-up" event) next weekend. (Started BN this spring and did several Novice over the summer). Went to UNH to school today with the goal of just doing all the Training fences. She did them all fine, which would have made me happy enough. But, as I headed for one of the fences, that I thought was Training, I realized about three strides out that it was really HUGE, and that little flag in the shadows was green, not black. She took a hard look, and I just kicked on and grabbed mane. She jumped it with no problem. I was thrilled. So, then we continued on to several more prelim fences with not a stop or a balk the whole time. Just thrilling to find out my horse can really JUMP! And best of all, she loved it!!

My new pony!! Free lunged/jumped her on Monday -- 48 hours after buying her at a track auction -- and she hardly batted an eye at an almost 3' vertical. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif "Frankie" is definitely going to be fun to work with (although I'll probably always have a price tag on her).

My old pony!! Couldn't mention Frankie without mentioning how much I love my Char-pony. She's the all-time bestest. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif Even when something is bothering her, she tries her heart out to do what i"m asking. I have a Trail-et (very similar to the Hawk) and loff it. As do the horses. You'll have a blast!

My Happy News is that yesterday I "won" our lesson. I have finally - after, what? 6 years? - figured out how to open my fingers over the fence so I don't snag my horse in the mouth. I am apparently doing it a tad early, because Mr. Blondie decided that if I didn't have really solid contact with his mouth, he could just nip out to the left. We had a number of discussions about this, and with a little help from the persuasive powers of The Beating Stick, he decided it was less trouble to jump after all ;-)

Oct. 8, 2004, 10:06 AM
Life is good. Child is in college so time for me, got an equispirit (like the hawk) and gave old trailer to child so I don't have to/get to take her to events anymore, and my riding has reached new levels. It is most enjoyable as I have gotten back to my old self as much as possible after radiation 2 years ago for bone mets. Can sit serious bouncy collected trot on the arab and have the young appendix guy almost ready to take novice. Life doesn't get much better.

Oct. 8, 2004, 11:34 AM
My happy news today is that I rode this morning for the first time in 3 months! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif With Foxy gone, I've had nothing to ride! We brought my foxhunter down to ride until I get my new guy. He's almost 18 years old, OTTB and never done anything but race and Foxhunt (whip horse...aka- run hell-bent for 4 hours once a month...) He's so out of shape and HIGH STRUNG it's not even funny. But I got on him today (first time he's been ridden in atleast 6 months) and he was GREAT!!!
He trotted nice circles ON THE BIT! He went round and on the bit at a walk trot and canter! And he def jumps anything. Maybe I'll take him to a schooling show before I take him back to SC at the end of Nov. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
I'm just glad to be back in the saddle!

Less than a week to go before Grass Ridge! (Unfortunately during that time I have TWO midterms. Which I should be studying for right now.)

We had an easy lesson of course work yesterday, the only trouble spot being an oxer-to-oxer bending line which is unlikely to appear on a BN course anyway. And if it does... Patrick will be a good boy and jump it at an angle if I don't get in straight.

Oct. 10, 2004, 03:50 PM

Yes, we did go to honey Run. He was a superstar! we even tackled the weldon's wall http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/winkgrin.gif He looked at the training trekehner, but I said go and he jumped! I was very proud of him.

We did end up in the rain, but it was fine - kind of refreshing really.

So where did you and your girl go schooling? tell me all about it!

Oct. 14, 2004, 06:35 AM
We went to Hunters Run and schooled with Holly. I guess we picked the better location "meteorlogically" speaking--because we didn't get a drop of rain.

Glad to hear that your guy did well--I'm not at all surprised! Sounds like he is ready to go training. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif

We had a great time. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif My girl was a little "bratty" at first--but once we started to school the "big dog" fences--she started to pay attention. She was a bit too strong and didn't want to listen to my requests to "turn" after some jumps, so we worked on a lot of jumps followed by TURNS!! I think the phrase "FLOAT HER TEETH" was used in reference to getting her to turn after the jump, he, he. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Anyway--she was super over the trachener, the Weldon's wall, the water with the big log out, the benches and log stuff, skinnies, etc. She didn't *love* the gigantic ditch in the back field when she first saw it, but once she figured out she could leap over it--then she was just fine. All and all--it was a great school and wish I could get a few more in before our next event. But--no more time! http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/sigh.gif

Oct. 14, 2004, 08:51 AM
That is awesome! While another school is always nice - it sounds like she is ready for Kentucky. Those are some big and difficult jumps that you got her over yesterday!

Do you normally take lessons with Holly? I never have, but have seen her ride at shows - she seems to be a very effective rider.

So are you getting excited for KY? I can't wait! (kinda wish I was going training now though http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif) Oh well, theres always next year....

Good news that only eventers can recognize. One of my daughters finally finished a HT without being eliminated. She finished with 154 penalties, but she finished.

Oct. 15, 2004, 08:38 AM
JustFive -

Oh boy can I relate!!
Two years ago I remember how thrilled I was to get eliminated at THE LAST FENCE at recognized N with my horse. And since there was no one directly behind me, the jump judge (ssshhh!) let me jump it after the refusal.

I still got eliminated, but it was the 1st N XC course where we had jumped every fence!

(we did a bit better after having gotten over that roadblock!)

I won't tell!! http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif

Oct. 15, 2004, 01:07 PM
Let's pay a tribute to all the kind jump judges out there! I have had two in the past that were nicer than they should've been! One time, with my old horse--we had "issues" at a fence and the wonderful jump judge let me "keep trying" in between the horses that were on course. I already had the big "E" anyway--so at least I got to school! Another time (same danged horse) I could not get him to cross a stupid bridge that was unfortunately the path to the rest of the course. Again, nothing short of detonating something large would've urged him over it, so she let me get off and lead him back and forth over it. Then ride him back and forth in between the other riders coming through. They were great, and I really appreciated it!

Lets see, Happy news. I sold some trees out of my woodlot, so I get to eat again! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif And, I don't have to worry about bills for a good long time to come.

Some racehorse trainer called me at 5:00 this morning, and woke me up to tell me he's giving me a 3 yr. old filly, that's just not a racehorse, but might be a riding/show horse prospect.

I have two mares in the barn, just about ready to foal. They're pmu mares, with no due date.

The weather has been unbelievable, everywhere you look, it's a picture calendar kind of scene. The colours are fantastic.

My barn repairs are progressing well.

Risk-Averse Rider

Mr. Blondie and I not only survived Grass Ridge this weekend (including what must have been at least gale force winds during x-c on Sunday - I won't need dermabrasion for some time...), but we completed the course, didn't come in last, and our BN Team took 2nd!!

Thanks to Sheila Strickler, they gave out awards for placings after dressage, and we were SECOND out of all the BN riders (Sr & Jr). 37 points. (Needs more energy; needs more energy; needs more energy.)

Thanks to my dropping my eye at the first fence in stadium, we had a refusal and 18 time faults, but the rest of the round was AWESOME.

Thanks to my death grip on the reins over the first three x-c fences, we had a stop at the 4th fence, then a great string of 5 fences, including the water and the down bank, then another stop at the top of a long hill because he was certain that the officials were going to eat him. Silly twit. We trotted that fence, then roared through the rest of the course, including an up bank, a ditch, and a bench that he thought about stopping at, but I convinced him otherwise.

Overall, we finished 10th out of 19 starters, 12 of whom finished the competition. Not bad for our second competition together, especially since I was close to withdrawing (a) during x-c warmup, (b) after the refusal at 4, and (c) after the refusal and near unseating at 10.

We have a schooling show at home next weekend, and I am ready to roll...

This is quite a roller-coaster ride...We knew it would be going in...My eyes are so scratchy...The Red Sox beat the Yankees last night in 12 innings...It was the longest game in playoff history...It ended with a David Ortiz home run at 1:28 AM!!!!! Oh Mercy!

My good news is that the wedding went without a problem (I was going to say without a hitch, but that might have implied that they didn't get married, and they did!), my grandson is a cutie and already flirts at three months, the 25 member 10 day family reunion was a blast, my horses vaguely remember who I am, and my house will soon be put back to rights. Woohoo!

Cheers for the Sox!!

Even bigger cheers for great volunteers (and we know who they are!)!!

I wish that I had known you were at Palmer River to say hi. I was there grooming for my kids who were in JBN. I am through for the season myself.

One of my kids was 2nd, the other 6th. Not too shabby!
