Am I number 1000? http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif Cool! MrBGH and I, along with the girl who is leasing Iago, went for a nice trail ride today. The trails are in pretty good shape now. There are still lots of sticks and branches, but not too much mud.
The tulips and daffodils are sprouting and I noticed lots of buds on trees and bushes. Spring is close now! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

BGH- I was just thinking on my hack today that it is about time for us to meet up and head out into the woods!

My happy news is that I spent some time this afternoon watching Jane Savoie's "The Half Halt Demystified," and now I can't wait to go ride tomorrow and try applying her words of wisdom. I also watched Rolex and Hall of Fame Event Horses, so now I'm all pumped up!! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

i finally figured out the reason behind my horses registered name! bahada irish story... for the past 2 years i wondered where on earth would one get that name? WELL! for the first time it clicked in my head that her b-day is on St. Patrick's day! I feel really dumb for not realizing it before, but at least now my mind can be at rest http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Okay.. Happy Happy News!!

This past month or so have moved to a new farm. The grass is perpetually green on OUR side of the fence here!

The people are the nicest I have ever met in all my riding years... They are helpful, supportive, fun, just totally amazing horse people.

My mare and I have moved to the ultimate level of mutual trust and are thriving!

I'm taking lessons with a trainer who has just completely restored all of my confidence that I honestly thought I'd lost for good. Wow.

My new barn mates took me out XC, and they schooled me on how to do drops, ditches and water - they were so helpful and patient!

My horse and I trust each other to last degree. Mostly because the new eventing environment we are in.

I'm so glad we moved to eventing...

This is IT!

Waffles are SO yummy. Especially with plain yogurt and VT syrup. Oooohhhh. I haven't had a waffle in a year. (which could be one of the reasons I have lost 30 Lbs.!! http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif)
Mike and I are going out to have a little jump school now. I have set up trot poles to an X, a single vertical and a Lucinda Green style arrowhead. I must get it done before the 10" of new snow arrives, but I am frozen and am clearly procrastinating!

I have a mix of good and not so good news.

My happy news is that hubby, baby, and I made it home from our trip to Ireland with almost no troubles. Baby was excellent the entire trip, but came down with a cold on the plane ride home, so was grumpy the whole 8 hour flight home, but grumpy for her is not very grumpy compared to most. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Bad news was that our luggage never arrived in Dublin, so we spent more money then we had planned...and we STILL don't have the luggage, but people are working on it. Most disapointing was that my old 1970 Nikon, with 300m lens was in the lost luggage...its irreplacable, and I'm very sad. BUT, not having it made me figure out the digital camera aspect of my Sony Handycam DVD recorder, and I was able to capture more pictures then I would have with the Nikon.

We got to see the Galoubet son Touchdown (who is the sire of the late High Scope and the jumper mare Liscaglot) while there, and all I can say of him is WOW. He was simply amazing to watch strut around. We were able to see a few of his kids, and were very impressed with him from a breeders standpoint. He is VERY consistant with what he produces.

We also got to see Cruising and Sea Crest, and a bunch of Cruising babies. I fell in love with two in particular...but one is NOT for sale. The other, well, lets just say we are looking into importation stuff. Both were grey, and I vowed long ago to never own a grey, but seeing the old guys, and the babies from them, just made me see way past the color.

Other great news is that one of my boarders mares finally had her baby while we were gone. He is a strong, tall, healthy appy colt out of her TB mare. He was a test breeding from her appy stud, and she is greatly pleased with the result. Stud is comming over to my place sometime this month to tease her other mare, and to see if my IDx mare is a silent heater like we suspect.

The weather here is great, and it is staying light enough for me to get a ride in in the evenings when hubby can watch the baby. We have a guest room, and extra horses to ride if anyone wants to take a vacation from the winter up north!

OK--here's some happy news from our little part of the world! You all have gotten to hear us northerners whine about the awful winter weather for months now. Well, the other night, putting away jumps, and chatting about horses (of course), we realized that there we stood, in only sweaters--completely comfortable. It was an absolutely beautiful Michigan evening--clear and cool. Then a sandhill crane flew overhead (if you've ever seen these--they are huge!) and into the sunset. It was just nice to be able to stand outside, lingering and watching our horses wander out into their pasture without being frozen the minute we stopped moving! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Yep--they probably don't even appreciate a night like that in Florida!

And the good news is .... We didn't get the snow they predicted!

I changed my OTTB's name again. She came with Golden Bangle. Soon became Golden Bagel in my barn, so that had to go. We tried Allis for Allis-Chalmers tractors as she had to live in the tractor shed when she first came, and Kubota didn't quite do it for me. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif (Before everyone flames me for the tractor shed, it really is a 12x12 stall without a front, and we added the front for her, but the tractor lived outside, poor old thing.)

Allis just wasn't her: I don't know why. So the new naming attempt is (Ta da!) Jane Deere. Seems to fit better, as she is a plain bay Jane, and looks far more deer-like than my warmbloods.

And the stream flowing through our basement has slowed to a trickle!

Who else has good news this lovely Monday?

PS: I just noticed who-all was on the board. Did you ever notice that it's mainly eventers on Monday mornings?

Janet
Apr. 5, 2004, 07:07 AM
Which list are you looking at? The one at the bottom of the eventing page only lists people looking at tehevenitn section. The one at the bottom of the main page has a LOT more, and don't look like "mostly eventers" to me.

My good news- the blowing wind yesterday, according to my dressage instructor, made it a good day to "start some more advanced exercises" with Music. We did several bits of "soft passage", a few "halfsteps" and "the beginings of a canter pirouette"!!!

Other good news (and I won't say much so I don't jinx it) is that someone has expressed interest in buying the old "mini farm" (just under 5 acres) even before we have officially put it on the market!

For schooling the canter pirouette, might I recommend the sight of mini horses pulling carts? I'm sure Prozac Pony would have scored a 10 on the one he executed yesterday in the parking lot of a local equestrian facility ;-)

I just got home from 5 days in Bermuda (where it was quite freezing and WINDY) and tomorrow my fellas are getting shoes and I am going to RIDE. 5 days is really way too long. The morning of the 3rd day, I was ready to pack it up and come home!!(shh, don't tell Hubby, it was his birthday prezzie from me! What a good wife. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif)

The good news? I just moved Dan to a barn 9.5 miles from my house and I get to see him every single day and I love it!

The bad? I moved him because he has 2 injuries in 1 month up in Petaluma (1 hour + away from me) http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif He also has a splint and is out for this month http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Anyway, he's in horse heaven on a farm with 300+ acres, a covered ring, a cross country course, and 3 trainers who are all **** alumni. Oh, and did I mention he's a 10 minute drive up the road?? http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Well, a little more good news to report. I may actually be ready to compete this coming wknd! (http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif) I took Mike across town today for a little XC school..He was a star! My hubby came along as the babysitter although seemed more interested in his golf swing! Mike zoomed around, over the jumps, up and down the banks, down into the water (flying leap, all-4's landing, but no hesitation!) Mike clearly loves his job and was good as gold. Hubby says Mike looks like a well-oiled machine. Compliments like that don't come along very often! I was riding the brakes too much, but I think all those broken bones last winter made me a little more...cautious? Sensitive to speed? Aware of the ground?! Anyhow, it was a great confidence boosting morning for both of us. Now if I can get rid of this Flu bug, I'll be all set. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/dead.gif

Oh, You guys are so lucky, I haven't been able to start riding, yet, because it's still way too muddy! But, one more pony has found a new home. I have a snowdrop blooming. Kim's (who adopted Robin and Poppy, two of the pmu girls,) dad came over with a truckload of carrots for all the horses, and I'm busy mucking out my house! I'll have it spotless by tomorrow, and then, I think by Tuesday, I'll be able to start working the horses! I can't wait!

After a "Mr. Toad's Wild Ride" today, I've been thinking hard to find happy news.

Here goes (knocking wood after every item ;-)
1. I have a horse.
2. I have a horse I can show.
3. I have the health & funds to show.
4. I never got scared today, even when we blasted across the finish line, past the thankfully-empty dressage ring, and finally ground to a halt at the front of the property. Not even when he bucked after being spanked for a runout (3rd out of 4 for the day... eyeroll).
5. We didn't get eliminated.
6. I didn't feel the need to retire.
7. We didn't finish in last place.
8. I stayed in the saddle.
9. I never even came close to not staying in the saddle.
10. Neither of us got hurt.
11. We won Reserve Champion in the Senior Beginner Novice Year-End High Point for our trainer's schooling series.

And... I think the reason he was being such a butthead was that he had gotten his tongue over the bit. (Note to self: remember which holes to use when you take your bridle apart.)

CG......I am wondering as to the whereabouts of the GWV as well. It has been weeks. Is she sick? Hurt? Gone on holiday? What is the DEAL??
Flora Lea is quite a lot like Hitching Post. There were some tricky questions for a first-of-the-season run, the footing was pretty deep and lumpy but all together, it made for a great time bc now we have some extra confidence having lived thru it! Plus, it was GREEEEEEN, and all the Magnolias and ornamental trees were in full bloom. Looked like our late May! Mike will go T at UNH, Tahddy will go N at Fair Hill and we are pleased as punch. Thanks for asking.

HAPPY NEWS!

The granddam of my eventing pony Theodore O'Connor produced her 17th foal last night at the age of 24. This is to be her last foal and she's already up in Michigan where she'll live out the rest of her life with the person who was one of the original partner's on Con's sire 17 years ago.

Don't know the condition of the foal yet, except it is up and nursing and the mare seems fine. I'm just so grateful that she's done it again, regardless.

My news is sort of bittersweet... Prozac Pony is starting a new career that will be more suited to his stiff hocks, and I'm awaiting the arrival on Saturday of what I hope will be my new event horse.

I KNOW this is the right thing to do, but I've pretty much only ridden Prozac Pony for the past 6 years. Half his life.

The up side of this whole deal is that he will be leased by his favorite 12-year-old munchkin (all 72 pounds of her!). Here they are yesterday on our x-c course, where they WTC'd around for a lovely afternoon bareback outing.

Yes, he just loffs her. I knew it was a match made in heaven the first day I let her lead him back to his stall. I was hovering closely behind, expecting to see her (then) 60 pounds flying helplessly at the end of the lead rope as he powered down the barn aisle.

But, nooooo... not only did he sedately progress down the aisleway, but he carefully stepped into his stall and stood while she removed his halter, then waited until she was out of the way before moving to his hay.

Prozac Pony knows A Good Thing when he sees it ;-)

I have started the CANTER mare my boss bought last October going out on walks around the property. We don't have any kind of enclosed arena so I just crossed my fingers she wouldn't take me off to parts unknown at a high rate of speed! No problem, she loves her new life! She's up but very sensible and incredibly curious, goes marching up to everything!

My boss rides in the jumpers, but I told her this one's an Eventer all the way http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif.

Got you beat - I turned half a century plus two in January. And let me tell you, it's a great age! It's fun to remember what I was thinking when my parents reached this milestone - surely life was nearly over! We're all living proof that it only gets better and better!

Happy birthday Barbara!!!! Balloons to you.

My own half-century is coming up in July...

But here's the HAPPY NEWS:

For the first time in my life, ever, I OWN A GOOD MOVER!!! This is astonishing to me. I worked my green green green TK gelding in the roundpen today (I got him just before I found out I had to have shoulder surgery, and he has been doing nothing but eating and hanging out in his shed for the last six months), and my jaw just dropped. Talk about uphill and floating and flowing and whatever adjective you can think of. Better than I remembered him being when we looked at him.

This is coming from one who in the past has traditionally started at the absolute bottom of the pack after dressage, so it is quite a shock and I am really excited about getting him up and going.

The Great Warrior Event Dad http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif and I did our first volunteering gig Sunday (in the past, I/we have always been grooms). We were traffic control at MCTA, where the xcountry course went across the road the sponsors used to get to their special parking lot overlooking the course. Let's just say that we were very, very nice to those people! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif It was very instructional to see who in the Training division was actually looking up and riding forward, since a number of people had stops, props, and falls at the trakehner. We heard Baltimore Orioles singing and a wonderful day was had by all. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif

One of these years, I expect the two of them [Bruce and Philip] to have their own division at Rolex, and contest it riding cattle. And they'd both still make the time. -- Heather

Ya, I have some good news. My buddy and coach is FINALLY home from Aiken and yesterday Mike and I went for our first lesson. It was FAAAAB! Goodness sake, I love taking lessons, and Mike LOVES his new saddle. It sure is an improvement over the 20 year old one! Poor guy. He said he'd do anything for me as long as I don't ever put that old one back on him! My mother always said "It is a poor carpenter who blames his tools" but a saddle that fits properly sure makes a difference!
Today, we get to go back for a jump school. YAY!

Unless another horse happens by when he's eating, in which case he pins his ears and makes faces. Then again, I'm likely to react that way if someone looks acquisitively at my chocolate ;-)

No pictures today, but we had a great ride this morning. I actually got brave enough to canter him out on the x-c course. He's got a loffly canter, and didn't seem to care if we were going towards the group, away from the group, or whatever.

He gets his teeth done tomorrow, and I'm hoping to snag the farrier to talk to him about Mr. Blondie's feet. I pulled a loose nail out today - loose because there was no hoof to speak of on the other side of the shoe. Maybe glue-on shoes? (Hm... I sense another Horse Care thread coming on...)

I am "escaping" from a horrible relationship and have gotten a wonderful job in Texas at Rising Star Farm. Ronda is a member of this BB and she has an absolutely beautiful place. I will live above the barn in a gorgeous apartment and I am so excited. Some of you may remember a thread about a month ago about someone in a verbally, mentally and emotionally abusive relationship, well that was me.

Great news, TX Bound!

And now for my good news: A dear friend (who moved her horse to my barn recently) had to undergo open heart surgery today to replace a valve. The surgery went well, and she should recover fully. She's even found an excellent doctor who has told her that she can continue riding (if not competing) after full recovery.

Praying and jingling for an uneventful recovery.

OK then,
I went to the barn and turned out my SOUND horse. Then tacked him up with bridle and surcingle and then he WALKED up the hill to the covered arena like a complete and total gentleman. He then proceeded to lunge like a big boy with no bucking, playing or bolting, and was listening to all voice commands like a pro. He then WALKED back down to the barn and stood in the crossties like a good boy while he was groomed, went into his stall with his lunch waiting and waited for me to take his halter off before diving into his bucket.

Maybe this doesn't sound like much but 3 weeks ago while he was on week 6 of stall rest and handwalking he was biting, rearing, and generally being a total PITA.

It's nice to have my horse back....

Great news, CG!

GWV, I don't think anyone from Area 1 was on the computer Saturday because we were all at the Groton House 2 phase.

Pol did her first Prelim with Mikey, and they were third, I believe. I took new mare over for a look-see, and had a pleasant hack around with her (although she did call to her stablemate who was competing, and had to be banished to the trailer for the duration of the dressage test!). Got to watch Bruce Mandeville ride the FEI test on Larissa, and to see lots of people whom I have missed through the winter. My happy news for the day....I am 25% through with my classes for the summer...!! IT's getting here!

That is so exciting because the day I am finished with classes, I start riding again 3X/week! I am planning on having a fall filled with eventing! Wahoo!

And, la dee da, it might be time for me to start looking for a youngster of my very own! I think I will set my sights on mid-winter to really start the search (it will take my mind off the depressing weather!) but I can start thinking about it and getting excited right now!

Bruce Mandeville is at Gathering Farm (when not at competitions or down south), and Groton House is about 1 mile away as the crow flies. Larissa isn't the easiest dressage ride, so I guess he thought he'd get in a little practice. It really was fun to see.

Every single day I am full of happy news! I went out to the barn yesterday and my SOUND horse went on his first grown up hack on the property all by himself! Where I have him we are on 350 acres of hills with a CC couse and galloping tracks. It was really windy and he just went out like a trooper. The trainer schooled him up on the hill and was even popping him over some of the little logs and he loved it. He walked back to the barn like a grown up with a loop in the reins. He is so happy to be back in work and out and about!

Wanted to share my really great news - but you have to bear with me for a moment to understand why it's such really great news.

About a year ago, my TB who was for sale got into some barbed wire and pulled part of his hoof off. Rehabbed him until Dec. and gave him away. For the first time in years, I'd have just one horse - Zephyr the Pinto Wonder Horse. He's a great little horse and we won our Beginner Novice division in our local CT assocation this year. The morning after the TB left, Zeph got kicked by a horse I was boarding and shattered his splint bone. Had surgery, surgery went well, but then he fell coming out of the anesthesia and subluxated his hock. Doc said he'd have to be put down. I cried. They tired one more time and got the hock back in. We're still going down a very long road to recovery, prognosis for jumping again very bleak. Eventing days are over.

Week before last my vet calls to tell me about one of her client's being transferred to Australia. I know these folks and they are very nice. Daughter was eventing her TB at novice/training. They just want the horse to have a good home and give him to me!!

He's just a love and will do anything I ask. I absolutely cannot believe my good fortune. He's a big beautiful TB with a QH mind. It has just been the most incredible gift.

No Happy News since the 10th? This it be wrong. So I'll play.

Mr. Blondie and I took our first trail ride together today. He was such a star, even though he's used to a step-up stock trailer and I have a straight-load with ramp.

Get on the trailer? Sure. Ooh! Look! There's hay! Munch, munch, munch. Get off the trailer? Sure. Look around a bit (but not all tall and worried, just sort of taking inventory). Ooh! Look! I can get to the hay from out here, too! Munch, munch, munch. Get tacked up. Get on. Start walking. He was pretty alert, and he didn't want to go past the first set of talking rocks, but a little urging got him past them. For the most part, he was Too Cool to Spook.

He didn't, however, like it when a couple cyclists came up behind us and wouldn't stop to let us get the horses off the path. Jerks. The problem was that they were behind us, because we saw other cyclists later, and they were coming towards us, and he didn't care. Didn't care about the joggers. Didn't care about the hikers (although he did startle because he had been looking off to the side, then turned his head, and suddenly they were there). Didn't care about the first dirt biker (sedately putt-putting along), but the second one, a little boy with a neon green & black wrap-around helmet, set him to backing away from the path. Perhaps he thought it was a giant insect riding a dirt bike. But he backed quite nicely, proving that he CAN rein-back; he just doesn't chose to.

We were probably out about an hour, mostly walking. That was enough, because it was starting to get warmish. He was fine back at the trailer, diving immediately into the hay; loaded like a charm; unloaded like a charm... such a relief that he was a Very Good Boy (not that I really expected otherwise, but one never knows...)

So that's my Happy News for this weekend.

Well, I had three healthy foals born, all colts, too. One is full brother to Con and Cass, so that makes three full sibs around. With any luck, at least one may have what it takes. (It's great news to me because their mom is the most jinxed mare in the world, having lost five babies to unusual stuff like Potomac, falling off a trailer ramp, MRLS, a pasture injury and my own stupidity in culling (years ago) a seeminlgy bitchy, but probably just very sensitive filly.

I learned another new thing about Mr. Blondie in our jumping lesson today.

He is not overly fond of garbage trucks. Especially big, noisy garbage trucks with hissing, screeching air brakes that come along and turn a corner just as he's approaching a fence.

The leaving a stride early wasn't too bad.

The bolting with his head in the air upon landing wasn't too bad.

But the ensuing head-down bucking like a bronco was a bit of a problem - not alleviated by my trainer's frantic cries of "Sit up! Sit UP!!!". What did she think I was TRYING to do?!?!?

Every day, an new lesson learned ;-)

(And the REAL happy news is that I stayed on.)

So much happy news from everyone!

I went on a hack with Dan this afternoon. When we got to the top of the hill my trainer said, "go pop him over that log". I picked up the trot and he just trotted right up, popped over all 12" of it and trotted right off! He was such a trooper and it was a total non-event. Then we walked by a herd of cows, and although he LOOKED at them, he just trucked on by!

He is being such a good boy and really loves his new home and my new trainer http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

You wouldn't think a lost shoe would belong in the 'happy news' thead... but this horse is *so* perfect that he even loses shoes politely. He left it in plain sight on the bare ground under the shelter. He *could* have buried it in his stall or lost it in the nasty weeds that I am still working on pulling from his turnout paddock.

But then he wouldn't be Patrick (http://www.pbase.com/image/28307970).

After much time spent searching, I think I have finally found my new event horse! She will be coming home to me next weekend. We will be starting our eventing careers together very shortly http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Only four more days until I get to go back to Virginia and see my horse that I miss so much. I am so excited and ready to work hard!

Got to ride for the first time in a week-- life/lost shoe/weather intervened in quick succession. I love my pony *and* my Albion SL... who knew that there existed a dressage saddle that I'd rather ride in than JUMP?!

Wendy, Wendy, me toooo!! I LOVE my new Albion dressage saddle!! I never want to get off my poor horse! I wear it for hacking too!
The other good news from here is that we have found a DREAMY lease arrangement for Jazzy with a great family at one of our favorite trainers'. YAY, Jazzy has a job! But I will miss him so badly...

My new fencing materials were delivered on Friday night!! It will go up, tomorrow morning! (Mon.) The revolution is over, and it's the begining of the Restoration of Dancing Lawn!!!
Edited to add, yesterday I started the day with 4 cats. Before I finished my first cup of coffee, I had 5 cats!!! (I've named him Oscar, and he's purring in my lap right now!)
