Put those cheers on hold, BarbaraG - we had a deluge this morning, and the dressage rings are ankle deep in muck!
So the show has been postponed until next weekend.
Sigh...

My husband gave me the dressage saddle I have been wishing for as an anniversary gift -- early cause we are moving up to Novice and he thought I should have it for that -- am I a lucky girl or what!!! Now, if I can just manage to RIDE decently this weekend!

I live in the desert, remember? Rain is a Good Thing - as is the occasional cloudy day, just for a change of pace.
I'd just rather that it not rain this hard all at once just before a show.

So, the good news is that Char has had 2 years off and has been slowly getting back into regular work, since about the middle of August. The thing that is so much fun is that he still has all the right buttons to push. Even tho he is fat and out of shape, he zooms off my leg, the medium trot is right there, the lateral work is all there, waiting for the summons. He is just as naughty as ever, thinks he has to bounce the trot poles to the X, etc., but he is so cool and happy to be in work again that I just don't care! Chaaalie. Bailey and I just got home from our first BN event. Our first time jumping 2'7"! He was great! He never looked at anything; just sailed over. Dressage was not so good so we ended 7 of 9. But I am so happy with his jumping that it really doesn't matter what place we got. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

BarbaraG -- my report on the horse event!! Rose and I did our first Novice at Elysian Hills today and we WON!! I am thinking it must be some sort of mistake but am totally excited. We got a 28 in dressage -- she was WONDERFUL -- and then clear cross country where I -- being 45 and out of shape -- pretty much turned into a sack of potatoes 1/2 way around the course but Rose took over and said 'Don't worry, Mom, I'll get us home! Show jumping we had a rail -- it was one of those jump and turn courses and I am pretty bad at the steering thing so it could have been prettier but it got done -- as the course had me just a bit intimidated I was happy with that. So we finished with a 32 and a big blue ribbon and a lot of aching muscles although Rose who is only five seems just fine.
It was a whole lot of fun!!

My tall boots fit again! Well, the calf part fits, the foot part is too small. Who knew that my feet would get fat? I've worn size 8 forever but now I'm an 8.5.
Not too long ago, I bought a pair of XW calf Devonnaire field boots, but they were too big. I thought about having them cut down and a gusset put in to fix the gaping tops. The marketing people must have read my mind, because the latest State Line catalog has Devonnaire field boots with a zipper and gusset, for under $200!
One of these days I'll put the XW calf (foot size 8.5) pair on Ebay. For now they live under my bed, never worn, in the original box.

Have to post my VERY HAPPY NEWS
We did our first Novice yesterday, my 5 yr old mare and I have done 5 events total!
and yesterday
Course brook was AWESOME !!!!
We got a 44 on dressage, minus 2 points for my dumb error of halt salute in the wrong place, means Cobee earned a very respectable 42....(dressage is not our strong point)
No faults on Stadium, course was slick and really a tuff ride, all the lines were 3 1/2 strides or 4 1/2 strides.... and for crazy speed girl she was awesome!
BUT
X-country was the best.....even with slick wet deep footing. Cobee was a super star !!!! She didn't even look twice at the ditch, which was part A of a combination she did the bank like log jump with out a thought, and went in the water like she had done it a million times!!!!! On top of that it was the best ride, good spots in control, x-country we have had.

Well, eventing may be over for this season, but field hunting isn't! Yesterday, a very large hunt field came down the road right in front of my barn, and then into (and through) the field next to our pastures. It was a beautiful day, with the leaves just starting to turn, and watching the field of some 60 riders was awesome. My event horse was busy having a heart attack in the barn, but I rode out to the edge of our pasture on a greenie to see what she would do, and she just watched calmly. Good girl!
Also, my retired event mare had a good 90 day preg check! For the record, we think it's a boy!

Thanks for reminding me I need to do that too. I am going to use some of my frequent Flyer miles, so I need to get organized.
But my good news is that, after being too slow at EVERY training event with Belle (sometimes with good reason, as I decided i didn't like the footing), we finally "made time" at Elysian last weekend. Unfortunately, I OVER compensated, and we actually got 2 "speed faults"

Ok, so they aren't huge, but now at home on my coarse of 10 jumps, 7 of them are 3' or more! (that's good for me). I have 3 at 3'3" and 2 at 3'6"! Monday when I jumped Foxy we jumped every jump out there and never touched a pole!!! I was so proud! We're getting there!

I had been avoiding this thread, as I have been pretty grouchy and ungrateful all year. However, last night, I read ALL of it and it gave me a little boost. It also made me feel a little sad when I read everyone's eventing plans and I remember when I was there. When I moved up here from FL 3 years ago, I sold my Quarter horse to a little girl who events him and keeps me updated. He was 18 and I just could not rationalize putting him through the trauma of the haul and then living in a totally different climate with snow & stuff.
Now, not only am I horseless,I really have not hooked up with anybody so I can at least ride someone else's horse. Whah, whah, whah!
On a brighter note, I dug deep and came up with some happy things...
I am going to watch the Virginia Horse Trials in Lexington at the end of the month and hope to meet some BBers while I'm there. I'll be the chubby one that used to be the lean, mean riding machine.
On an OT note: GWV, my boyfriend and I visited your fair state in Sept. and we absolutely adored it. We stayed in Woburn and took the train to Boston and then drove to Salem. Everyone always says you New Englanders are rude and abrupt, but that is simply not true! We had a wonderful time and cannot wait to go again. Our next goal is Maine!
Thanks everyone for just being here. My boyfriend calls y'all my cyber-friends.

Good news, good news! Finally...I am a medical transcriptionist and work for a bunch of docs. We just got a new doc and I had been talking to him about playing blue grass with my boyfriend. He asked me if I played and I told him I was working on the fiddle and had not gotten very far. He said he was trying to teach his wife to play guitar, but all she could think about was HORSES!! They just bought a 13-acre place with barn and 5 stalls, but they haven't gotten the horses yet. Then I, not so subtly, said that since I lived on the side of a mountain, I really had nowhere to keep a horse. His next words, "Come board at our place." He only lives a few miles away. I am bouncing in my seat and I cannot wait. Pretty soon, I will be able to get on DreamHorse.com and not just window shop! Yipee!

Somewhat belated Good News from the Valley of the Sun, where it was supposed to top 105 today... the day of the first of our schooling HT series.
Sigh...
Anyway, Prozac Pony was honest, obedient, and even generous a couple times - what more could I have asked?
We had a 47 in dressage... sigh... not great, but not dead last, at least. Then a double clear in stadium moved us up to 6th, and a double clear on x-c moved us into THIRD! (out of 12 total in Beginner Novice). 2nd place was one of my munchkin teammates on her new horse - she had a 46, also finishing on her dressage score. First was an inspiring friend from another barn to finished on her dressage score of 26 (we'd love to be able to hate her, but she's such a COOL person...)

I just bought a new horse!
Even though I'm a DQ in practice, many of my eventing friends on this board know that I lost a horse recently. I had only had him 4 weeks when he started showing neurological symptoms in August. Anyway, he was put down in Oct.
The new guy comes on the 28th, and I'm really looking forward to being back in the saddle again. It's time!
PS GWV he's coming from near Augusta Maine!

Hi,
Congrats, Weezie, on the new guy! My time is coming!
Good News: My fiance is a fine furniture maker and he has started building tack trunks. (Just started) He has almost finished the first one. It is solid wood and beautiful! This first one is made of pine because he wanted to make sure he got it perfect before going on to more expensive woods. Today, I picked out the most beautiful wood for the second one...Purple Heart. We are picking up the lumber tomorrow and he will start it the next day. Of course, purple is my very favorite color and the wood is deep purple. It is really an exciting venture and I cannot wait to let the public drool over these trunks. Of course, my real MO is getting him involved in the horse world - and it's working! Have a great evening everyone.

Snow?! Did someone say SNOW? I know you guys are all used to it and stuff, but just coming from FL 3 years ago, it is still just a miracle to me. I hope I never lose that feeling of my breath being taken away when I feel that first soft kiss of a snowflake on my cheek. Last year was a hoot! Everyone kept asking me, "Have you had enough, yet!?!?" I love it even though I chipped my kneecap in it last year (with the help of Sadie the wonder dog, as she was just 4 months old and quite full of herself).
By the way, my fiance and I are having dinner with the doctor and his wife who are going to let me board at their house as soon as we get the property fixed up. I love to organize and I kind of hope she doesn't so I can put everything in its little place.
Oh, and I almost forgot...HopefulHunter on this board gave me tickets for the WIHS Saturday and I'm dragging said fiance along, too.
Happy, Happy Thursday!!

Prozac Pony and I did a schooling show today, and we took 4th in the 2'6" jumpers (would have had a better time in the jump-off, but I didn't think carefully enough about the approach to the next-to-last fence, so we missed the inside turn). Still, we were double-clear, and he was jumping well.
And then we won the 2'6" derby class - 4 stadium fences - jump out of the arena - 8 x-c fences, including an up-bank and a water obstacle - jump back into the arena - 4 stadium fences. Optimum time was 3:03 for the 18 jumping efforts, and we came in at 3:03... even though I hit the wrong button on my watch, so had no idea what our time was!
All in all, a good day... and it's FINALLY starting to cool down!!!!!

RAR - Way to go on the Derby Class!! Sounds like great fun. And I can relate to the "forgot to set my watch" syndrome. When Zeph and I go cross country, the first thing I say to the starter is "help me remember my watch". We've done that more than once! But then I figure at my age it's understandable to forget sometimes. At least I've not forgotten where the jumps are!!

I saw Beezie Madden do it on OLN's coverage of a Spruce Meadows derby once - she was going to that airy vertical at the base of that bodaciously steep downhill, and she grabbed mane.
I figure, if Beezie "My Legs Must Be Super-Glued to My Horse" Madden can grab mane, so can I!
(Plus I think now that Prozac Pony takes it as a signal that it's safe to jump...)

I heard on Paul Harvey (the greatest radio news guy ever haha) that there was a big explosion on the surface of the sun that created this huge magnetic disturbance. He said that (this was like Tuesday or Wednesday) in Alaska they could see fire explosions in the sky all night and that by the weekend people should be able to see it all the way down in Texas. We went out on a secluded hill top thursday and friday nights and thursday night alone I saw 37 shooting stars and we kept seeing these crazy comet-looking things that were really wide and looked like fire. They life a crazy green tail after they disappeared. It was really neat

OK, at the risk of completely jinxing myself (I can't believe I'm even doing this)...
my horse, once so lame (caudal heel syndrome) he couldn't walk on a flat surface without limping, happily zoomed up the "sweet spot" on the trail yesterday so fast that I could barely keep up on my speed-lovin' leased mare (I've been inviting all my friends over to hack my big guy cause I'm so excited he's sound)...
Watching that big fuzzy butt galloping off in front of me was just about the best moment of the year.
Now, if I could just get him to stop "free schooling" over the XC fences in his field until we are ready to jump, I'd be all set...

My filly didn't turn a hair, accepted my leg (doesn't know what it means, but didn't mind it), and we even trotted one long side of the ring. Yay! I didn't even feel she was thinking about bucking. Double yay!

1. Prozac Pony USED HIS BUTT!!!! OMGiH - I've never felt him move like that before. I actually had horse up in front of me while cantering.
and....
2. I finally met muley1 ;-) Confused the heck out of my poor trainer, as the muley's trotted by, and I called out, "Is that Muley?" And then, upon receiving an affirmative response, "This is Prozac Pony!"
A good day to be us.

My mom's side of the family are all Canucks - in fact, my mom (although born in NH) was raised in Montreal for a while - in a CONVENT, no less! - and didn't learn to speak English until she entered first grade, back in NH.
But I digress.
I really came here to boast SHAMELESSLY about Prozac "I'm a Jumpin' Fool" Pony, who several times in our lesson today cleared a 3' vertical from a loooong approach, never blinking an eye.
Almost all the fences in our lesson were solid Novice, which is a HUGE step forward for us. (I still remember all too vividly being terrified of a 2' vertical ;-)

Well season is over and now I can post the happy news, we are still in one pease.
It was a very rough season for The Girl, Harlekin, and me. She aint a girl any more, but one tough woman.
We started out great in Trojan, wining our training division. Than came her first Prilim in Trojan, it was a tough one, she took a serious beating. 60 points plus a lot of time, and some real hart hits.
The next one in High Praerie did go rather well, we took time but had no jump penalties in X-C, she hit the jump out of the water very hard with her hinds, bone jaring, it hurt.
Abe Ranch was very bad, 60, three refusals, I rode my skinny but of to get her through it. I thought I had lost my horse, That she had lost her heart.
We went to Goose Downs, Dressage was horrible, lucky to keep her in the arena. It did not matter any more. I took my heart and threw it as far as I could and followed. She blew through stadium, absolutly nuts, same in X-C, rekles, no brakes, just full out. It was absolutly exciting, Never rode Goose Downs so fast. I had my girl back. A big thanks to the Goose Downs.
Jackson was next, dresage was again terrible. the Indoor ate her alive, X-C was a dream, just point and shoot, naturally absolut nuts, incredebal intens, Her way. Stadium the same.
High Praerie, good dressage. X-C, already in the start box she was going bonkers, tore out of the box and blew over the first three jumps.
On jump 4 we had a last second discusion on how to jumps the corner and nearly flippt over the jump. It pissed her of, she was mad and ripped through the rest of the course. She needed some stitches after this one and we called it a day.
Infection plagued her the next 2 weeks and I was about to call Galway of.
Galway. Our best prelim dressage of the year, shortly after it stadium. A strange affair, for some jumps she was going like hell and others she was very hesitant. She was very sensitive in her back and i had to put 2 vertebras back to where they belonged.
X-C was awesome, absolutly nuts, but her stile.
Turning after jump 15 the ground just gave, despite studs, it just blew away, big time. We hit the graound very hard. She was confused when she got up, and waited for me. I took the rains out of the martingal and was ready to take her back to the barn, when the jump judge asked if I would get back on her to continue. Geeeeee, she did judge this one not as a fall of horse, I put the rains back through the martingal, climbed back on her, troted her, clean, galloped and she blew through the rest of the course.
Middle of the season I thought I had lost my horse, but I learned that when it gets realy tough, when it hurts, that is just the moment when she grows.
I am very glad to have her, willing to put up with her tantrums and absolut madnes, becuase I know, when it counts she will be there.
I just hope, to survive her.
Dam its winter now, no shows to go to, to enjoy Her madnes.

The eclipse was amazing!
My good news today is that my vet wants me to write up my horse's medical history for the clinic's newsletter. This is the horse we thought had ulcers but turned out it was EPSM. With new studies showing that 30% of all horses (not just heavy breeds) can have varying degrees of EPSM, this is great news. The more people who learn about this condition, the more horses can be helped thru diet changes. YAY.

Barbara, you are so sweet to ask! Count on you to know that eventers want and need to talk about their XC rides (I loff the debriefing you and the GP do at UNH) and about our new ponies.
She's a 4yo 16.2ish plain bay mare with a sweet disposition and quite lovely movement. We had seen her when we went to the track 3 weeks ago and of the 20 or so horses we looked at, she was our pick. But she was lame behind and we were very skeptical when the trainer called two days later to say she was sound, and didn't go back. Fast forward to Monday morning when my coach and I both get calls from CANTER saying that this mare has got to go today. It seems someone had vetted her (squeaky clean) and then decided not to buy her, but the trainer was shipping out. So, off we went to the track, a wad of cash and a horse trailer in tow, and a few hours later she was turned out in a small safe paddock at home. Can't wait to start playing with her!
Now about the name. She comes with Golden Bangle. A very nice name, to be sure, but there is a strip joint outside of Boston called the Golden Banana. You can just guess how long it took all my barn friends to make that leap! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif What do you all think of Gabriella?

I'm so proud http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif And, she was amazed at the great condition of his coat where he was clipped. Golden Bangle is a pretty name. You'll get used to it, and you can call her Shirly if you want. Nevermind the Banana- you don't frequent that part of town anyway, altho now we will all have a chuckle at your expense whenever we go past on 95!
Actually, I changed Mike's name, now that I think of it! He never raced, but his jockey club reg. is (r u ready?) Silver Morningwood. Good gawd, the poor guy.
Anyhow, congrats. When I see you next, I can tell you a little story about that mare. I am thrilled you picked her up. Good going.

Too cute not to post!
Happy News for the future of eventing. This was this pair's last outing together - she's moved on to a somewhat larger mount, and he's teaching some littler kids how to ride (I think he's in his late teens, at least).
Hope it makes you smile and say, "Awwww..."

I'm still tired from an exhilarating dressage lesson last night, but GRINNING. I can finally feel that we are going to have major canter breakthroughs this winter. I plan to focus mostly on flatwork this winter - weekly lessons locally plus a monthly lesson with Judy Westlake. However, my body tells me that I should not put jumping totally on the back burner - these old joints don't flex so well when out of practice. So my barn buddies & I plan to help each other every week and get our instructor in every couple of weeks. Suddenly, I'm starting to really look forward to the winter!
Hope to make it to the USEA meeting.
Oh yes, and I have already signed up for the Area I adult camp at GHMHA for June - CAN'T WAIT!

Cattle and sheep dogs and mules, OH MY!!
Well, BarbaraG, while you were off in the wilds of Maine, Prozac Pony and eight of his barn buddies were off in the wilds of Prescott, Arizona, doing an eventing demo at the 2nd Annual Equifest.
My friend Karen and I trailered up early with Prozac Pony and her horse (Sully), in hopes of getting "the boys" settled down a bit before we had to do our thing. After getting their stalls set up, we hand-walked them down near the arena so they could see the sights.
You could just hear them thinking, "What the FUH? This must be a horse show, because we've got stalls, but we've NEVER seen a horse show like this!"
Cattle. Sheep. Sheep dogs. A gazillion Western horses. Trick riders. A fake cavalry charge, complete with cannon and gunfire, and a chuck wagon drawn by mules. Horses wearing silver tinsel hula skirts like breastcollars. Kids. Balloons. An indoor arena, complete with blaring PA system. (Prozac Pony hasn't been ridden indoors since we moved down from Michigan in 1999, and we expect that Sully, an OTTB, has never been ridden in an indoor.)
I must say, though, that Prozac Pony has NEVER had suspension at the trot like he did on Saturday!!! My trainer said later that she kept catching sight of him and wondering, "Who is THAT?!?!"
All in all, quite the adventure. And one of my friends who was there with her OTTB has issued a decree that I may never, ever again be wussie about going to an event ;-)

Welcome back, Barbara! Glad you had a good time. And thank you Risk Averse for proving once again that eventers will do anything to promote our sport (even if we have varying opinions about the proposed amateur division rule).
New mare is doing wonderfully and is running around barefoot in a field until January when we will address the issue of riding. We'll have an unveiling once the shaggy coat is shed out, and maybe even get a picture posted somewhere to share with all.
Meanwhile, she's acquired a barn name: Allis, as in Allis-Chalmers tractors, because until I can get a horse sold or find a super good home for my pregnant mare, she's living in the tractor shed! (Hey, it beats Kubota! http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif)

Barbara & Jessica,
Hope you didn't max out your credit cards in Kittery - know it well from when we used to join all the other Quebecers in the annual migration every Victoria Day.
Here in the extreme South of Area IV it was a balmy 65 and we had fun helping out our barn's schooling dressage & CT. Apart from the locals, we had half a dozen YRs from Tulsa, OK doing the CT - which is a good omen for next year when we start our "I-35" series.
Weather was so good Sunday that Mrs. KB decided she needed to blow the cobwebs off & do some of the Prelim jumps. A big difference from our old hunting grounds with the Lake of Two where it's already dropped below zero (C).
Have fun in Boston, we'll be SCUBA diving in Belize.

Thanks so much for the warm welcome! I promise to contribute whenever and wherever I can. My computer time is limited, unfortunately, as work keeps me on the road a lot (too much) these days.
This work thing really gets in the way of my riding (and my social life!) I could really use just a few more hours in the day...or a million bucks! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Well, OK, Barbara. Here's some good news. As you know, I have a horse with EPSM. He has been on his radical diet for 8 months and has truly become a different animal. (you've all gotten quite sick of my blabbing on the subject http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif) So, yesterday, I decided I would try to clip him without tranqualizer (last year he was so averse to the idea I nearly lost my life before giving him the drugs!) So, on the cross ties, alone with me, with no meds what-so-ever, I clipped him. Easy-peasy. He stood like a rock. Never moved 1 foot, looked at the view and snoozed. It was delightful!

Pol, I was noticing a horse I have on the EPSM diet(variable, 1 cup of oil, 2 qts. grain with 6% fat, alfalfa hay at lunch, and weight builder) and I am confused with her weight. She looks soooo good everywhere but her haunches - I mean sorta concave. I haven't had her in consistent work lately due to other commitments. What do you think? Should I up her feed. Oh, she is on beet pulp, too.

I'll play http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
2003 wasn't the best year, by far.. in fact, it managed to be closer to the worst. I ended up bouncing from horse to horse and not really being allowed to commit to one, and not getting anything accomplished.
So.. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif My plans for this winter are to buy myself a seatbelt and buckle myself in, recondition Rhapsodee and see if we can make some waves in the spring. She's a willing partner and, as I was told when I first took her out, she'll give you as much as you give her, and more. SO, that means this winter we are going to have to do some hardcore flatwork and strengthening. Its like walking on a tightrope, though; the past few weeks I've felt around and tried different things to see which way she warms up and works best. She seems to work best when I stretch her legs for her before I get on, especially the left hind- it is always a tad bit tight in comparison to the rest.
I'm thinking that if everything goes well through the winter, we'll maybe try a xc school when the weather is good, and if all goes well there, attend an unrecognized 1 day HT. If not, we'll stick to being a dressage horse- her owner would like to focus more on dressage than eventing at this point, anyway, and her eventer isn't the best dressage horse.

Yesterday, Prozac Pony & his favorite munchkin (AKA The Future of Eventing) were 3-for-3 in hunter classes at our schooling show.
4th out of 13 in the crossrails OF
3rd out of 12 in the crossrails EQ
6th out of 11 in the 2'0" - 2'3" OF
This was their first show together, and they've only had 4 or so jumping lessons together. Plus, the munchkin and her 23-year-old QH mare got a 3rd and a 2nd in the walk-trot and the walk-trot EQ classes.
Happy smiles all around.

30 inches of snow here on the South Shore of MA!!! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif
I'm taking care of a friend's two horses for two weeks while she's in Florida...
Plowed until midnight Saturday night, set the old alarm for 5am to get over to feed and muck, of course I woke up at 8:30am with no power!!
It took about an hour to shovel the plow truck out and finally I raced over to her house.
Her Shetland Popcorn was not in the barn where I left her... She made it to the far end of the field, and then got stuck there! I didn't know how to get her back without carrying her, the drifts were up to my underwire... http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
Finally I jumped on old trusty Clem (her old carriage boy) and we trudged through the snow, three times back and forth, to make some sort of a path for little Poppy. Well,
Maine is a place very close to my heart, having spent childhood summers at Old Orchard Beach.
The GP and I have volunteered at Snowfields for several years. When the Danny began, I thought it would be nice to have something for the Young Riders too!
Figure was a real horse, the best "schoolie" in the World!! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif He taught me anything and loved my too!!
So, that's the Story. Our Young Riders are the Best in the world and I hope we have done something to encourage and support them. The Horse's Maine also provides a Scholarship for them to continue their education.

An absolutely happy day today in Arizona...
First a jumping lesson this morning, in the crisp "winter" air.
Then, this afternoon, my friend Suellen and I went on a trail ride (well, a trail mosey, actually) in the glorious sunshine. We ambled along for about an hour and a half, enjoying each other's company and the pleasure of being out with our horses.
Doesn't get much better than a trail ride on a sunny afternoon with a good friend, does it?

A great weekend of sunny riding out here - jumping lesson and trail ride on Saturday, another trail ride on Sunday.
C'mon down, GWV - we've got a spare bedroom for you that overlooks the pool, and I'll scare up a horse for you. Or, if you don't want to ride, we've got a schooling HT on January 4 that could use some kicka$$ volunteers!

In addition to the guest room with the real bed, there's a queen-sized sleeper-sofa in the library, so Warren can come, too!
And I'm pretty sure there are some empty stalls in the main barn. It's only about 15-20 minutes away, unless you get stuck in traffic.

Had an absolutely fantastic cross country lesson yesterday. We added a couple new fences to our repertoire, plus a couple new questions (over a coop, 2-3 strides to the water; through the water, back out over that same coop). It was an absolute blast. Lovely, sunny day - perfect temperature - a great lesson partner - a wonderful trainer. Doesn't get much better than that without chocolate ;-)
Now down to two days and counting 'til our first hunting outing...

I assure you, my dear Tux61096, that Risk-Averse Rider does not let a day go by without chocolate. After all, "It isn't just for breakfast anymore."
I just meant that I was not consuming chocolate DURING my x-c lesson, and that the only thing that could possibly have made the lesson better (although possibly a little messy) would have been the addition of chocolate.

I lost 40 lbs this year, so that's something good (I've never gained or lost weight before, so I'm naive enough to think it will stay off now that I have learned proper nutrition). It was like 70 degrees today, which is also good, but I didn't go outside once to enjoy it so what's the difference if it had been snowing? http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
However, since it has NOT been snowing, I will be riding my young horse tomorrow for the first time in almost a year. I am very excited that I have finally gotten my priorities in the right order--horse on top--so that's a good thing. (of course, they say there will be rain tomrrow, so who knows, but I know I will ride him soon even if not exactly tomorrow).
Where is the Southland? I am in LA, does that count? Is the Southland something in Mass? I need to know these things because I'm moving there in March (yes, I'm the one who keeps moaning about moving to Boston). Does it just mean Fla and the other warm places back east?

FA, we want more details. SOME of us might be feeling LEFT OUT.
frugalannie
Dec. 30, 2003, 09:03 AM
Not to worry, Pol, we saved a big hunk of beach for your triumphant ride.
Hmmm, details... I don't know how good I am at describing it. Lovely clear warm day, as I said, and we got there just before dead low tide: the perfect time. The beach is about two miles long, with protected dunes on the inland side, and a nice gradual sandy slope to the waves. Just before low tide, there is a great deal of flat, damp sand exposed, which makes for perfect footing. A great place to practice your figures and lateral work, because you can see where you made a mistake. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
But for the Memorial Ride, no figures, just fun. My mare heads STRAIGHT for the water when we get to the beach, and I have to turn her away. I think she'd swim off to Europe if I gave her a chance. But she and another mare from our barn were happy and relaxed, on loose reins when we walked, getting a bit excited when we trotted: I really wish I could get that lenghtening in the dressage ring! And then quite polite cantering down the beach. Only one buck when I asked for a lead change, and it was a little one.
There were lots of other groups out riding, but our favorite pair of the day were two young girls (I'd guess 10-12 range) riding their ponies, pigtails flying. It looked like the perfect thing for kids to be doing, on lovely, safe ponies.
On the way back, I decided to canter through a couple of tide pools. The third one was a little deeper than expected, and we got soaked! Water splashing everywhere, and I'm pretty sure it was up to my mare's belly, at least, but she didn't seem to mind and headed for the next one with enthusiasm.
I wish I could figure out how to ride and take pictures, but I can't. There were lots of folks out there with fancy cameras and long lenses. If I see a photo, I'll try to post it for you. Otherwise, you'll just have to use the video in your imagination!
Happy New Year to you all!

Yep. Lyme in December. Not new infections, but chronic, low level cases that get worse when the immune system is suppressed by shorter days. Though the lights are supposed to take care of it for Music. But she is losing weight even though I have upped her food, and that is usually an indication that the Lyme has reappeared.

Oh no, Emstah and Pol!!! Well, if he had to do it, this isn't the worst time.
Ya, Barbara, we had an awful outbreak of late season ticks well into November. I got so frustrated in about October that I put the doggy one spot stuff on my horses, just to try to keep ahead of them. One of the good things about condo/ apartment living is you don;t have to deal with those creepy crawlies on a daily basis. Even so my Cairn terrier puppy had it diagnosed the first week of December and only just finished his Doxycycline. Thank goodness for antibiotics!
So Janet, they can get Lyme again? I thought that the antibody was protective after the first bout. Shoot! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Music first had in in 1996. The first year she had 3 recurrances. Since then the frequencdy has decreased, and this recurrance (if it is one) will be the first in 3 years.
Several vets believe that once they have it. they never completely get rid of it. The organism "hides" somewhere the immune system can't get to it.
