Well... overlooking the fact that I had a crash today in my jumping lesson (just one of those things...sigh), my lesson was in general wonderful.

We were doing a bounce-bounce-1 stride grid, and the first time, Prozac Pony chipped in and got 2 in the 1-stride. Not a big deal, because he's short-strided and often has trouble (or can't be bothered?) making the distances. So I rev him up and take him through again, kick, kick, kick, kick, he's going, he's going, he's... putting in another stride!

Whump! R-A-R hits the dirt.

My trainer said I wasn't really jumping ahead, but I was going with him when he decided not to go. (Not sure that makes sense - maybe she was trying to make me feel better.)

But the rest of the lesson was quite lovely, and after doing the exercise with a vertical instead of an oxer after the 1-stride, we did it successfully a couple times with the original configuration.

And fortunately, I'm not likely to meet a 1-stride combination in Beginner Novice ;-)

My new horse did her first Unrecognized Novice this last weekend, and she jumped everything and didn't scream throughout warmup wondering where her friends were (which is what she did at her FIRST show a few weekends before!). Now if I remember to take my spurs off before stadium next time so we can have a PRETTY round.... :-/

Rain? What rain? No rain here in the desert...

Let's see...

5 lbs lost since last week (and another 15 to go, but at least I'm making progress)

Even though it still hurts to walk after my crash on Tuesday, it doesn't hurt to ride (except getting on). Had a great conditioning session early this morning, with some full-out gallops that made Prozac Pony very happy ;-)

And tomorrow my husband is coming back from a hiking trip to Peru! (Note to self: must make bed before he arrives, and remove tack trunk from kitchen)

I am ecstatic about my ride yesterday...not because it was perfect, but because my old appy gelding was being very resistant. Ok, I'm not thrilled with his resistence, but for the first time,(this is the happy part) I WASN'T FRIGHTENED!! I am not sure why, but for the first time I sat down deep, put my legs on and tapped my whip gently to his spotted fanny and politely insisted that he moved forward. He scooted sideways, got light on the front, got light on the back, but at last gave a big sigh and moved forward. Unbeliveable. I always lose those fights...but this time I didn't fight, I just cheerfully insisted that there was nothing to get upset over. I can't believe it worked and I can't believe I wasn't afraid. Perhaps my time sitting ringside at the warmups during Rolex really paid off. I could really study how pros handle the resistent horse. After 10 years of riding, this session was the missing part of my riding equation. I feel like the kid who has flunked the 8th grade for years and finally passes into high school . Wahoooo, jumpforjoy!!!

That is such a great feeling, isn't it? Prozac Pony (the Stealth Appy, who actually looks rather like the photo of Jump for Joy in your profile) used to be able to get me to stop asking him for whatever it was he didn't feel like doing by bouncing up and down a little (we're talking maybe 2" off the ground, tops, front feet only). I was so afraid that he would do something, that I'd stop pushing.

And then one day, something clicked, and I kicked him forward or smacked him with the dressage whip, and he grunted in great surprise, then started behaving. It was WONDERFUL!!! We still have arguments about who's in charge (I have this delusion that *I* am ;-) but I win those arguments now, and they continue to get shorter and less vehement.

Gotta love those Appy brains - a little too smart for our own good, sometimes.

I have very happy news!! Our local schooling XC course at a farm about 1/2 hour away (the only one remotely close) was sold and we can't use it anymore http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif However, last year a girl from our eventing team and her husband bought 80 acres and this weekend we made some huge strides in putting up our own XC schooling course!!
And it's being all done by hand! We dug some many ditches - one 2'X 12' for the babies, one 4'X 12' and one 6' X 12' and these ones were ~2 feet deep. The girls did the digging and the boys did the stabilizing with railway ties and lanscaping posts. Then we dug another 3 ditches with the same parameters, except a little less deep for the 3 sets of trakhners. After that it was onto a shallow trench for our barrel jumps to sit in. Then guess what - we dug some more, this time though the boys used a tractor with a harrow to take away a portion of a small hill so we could dig in a bank. And this was all in one day!

Unfortunately I had to work my real job Sunday so I couldn't help out but I'm so excited for this place to finish. I'm happy we have such a great bunch of people to show with and help out.
And next year the property owners are even looking into putting in a water complex, they are great people!!

Opening a brand-new can of worms: I got a new horse! After 20+ years of my beloved original baymare and assorted "temps" I took the plunge and bought what I hope will be my future event horse.

She is a 5 yo Chestnut TB mare, unraced. She is 16.2 in her bare feet, lovely and rangy with a gorgeous shoulder. She is totally unschooled, but the girl who had her trail rode and said she is happy to go out alone, good on the road, and "goes through any water, no problem" !!

Sound good? It does to me! I just have to pull about a foot of long red mane and put about a hundred pounds on her...not to mention get her broke... but that's the fun part!

I'm gonna tell you a story
I'm gonna tell you about my town
I'm gonna tell you a big bad story, baby
Aww, it's all about my town

Yeah, down by the river
Down by the banks of the river Charles (aw, that's what's happenin' baby)
That's where you'll find me
Along with lovers, fuggers, and thieves (aw, but they're cool people)
Well I love that dirty water
Oh, Boston, you're my home (oh, you're the Number One place)
Frustrated women (I mean they're frustrated)
Have to be in by twelve o'clock (oh, that's a shame)
But I'm wishin' and a-hopin, oh
That just once those doors weren't locked (I like to save time for
my baby to walk around)
Well I love that dirty water
Oh, Boston, you're my home (oh, yeah)

Because I love that dirty water
Oh, oh, Boston, you're my home (oh, yeah)

Well, I love that dirty water (I love it, baby)
I love that dirty water (I love Baw-stun)
I love that dirty water (Have you heard about the Strangler?)
I love that dirty water (I'm the man, I'm the man)
I love that dirty water (Owww!)
I love that dirty water (Come on, come on) [fade]

Haven't thought of that in years... but up it popped, when you said Boston was your home ;-)

I spent my undergrad years along the banks of the river Charles... unfortunately, I'm not heading back this summer for my (gulp) 30th reunion. But if I ever get back to Beantown, I'll let you know so we can get together.

MORE good news - we had an UPHILL CANTER TRANSITION today. Never had one of those before.

I'll be needing lots of those hugs over the next week, as D-Day for Copper Meadows approaches.

A good conditioning workout this morning, starting about twenty to six...

10 minutes walking to stretch & warm up.
5 minutes posting trot with halt transitions and lots of changes of direction.
5 minutes canter/gallop with lots of changes of pace and some changes of direction.
3 minutes walking to catch our breath.
10 minutes alternating 1 minute trot - 1 minute canter/gallop.
10-15 minutes walking to cool down.

Prozac Pony was listening to me. It was a lot of fun. And there were several cute bunny rabbits scurrying around on the cross country course to make things interesting.

Tomorrow, jumping lesson, 6 am, followed by a massage in the late morning.

Sunday, he gets a "Munchkin Break" day. His favorite 60-lb munchkin will take him for a spin bareback. He loffs this, because he gets to poke his nose out.

Monday, dressage practice.

Tuesday, jumping lesson.

Wednesday, another conditioning day, probably.

And then... ON TO COPPER MEADOWS!!!

my happy news.... well, inspite of an annoying fiasco (i think that's the first time i've used that word!) with trailering... i *think* i *finally* have a ride to my show thats in 2 weeks- and my parents have promised that within the next year or two they plan on buying a nice big truck, selling off the hang-me-down station wagon that i got, and the truck will be for me!!!!!!!!!!! ME ME ME!!!! i could NOT BELIEVE IT WHEN MY MOMM TOLD ME THAT. it was the best news I've heard ALLLLLL month. i have never had anythign given (well, i guess trading my wagon for it- but i'm not complaining! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif) to me like that before, and let me tell you i am ECSTATIC!!!! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif This way I won't have to deal with trailering issues EVER AGAIN! (i have 3 trailers that i can barrow whenever i want- just no truck... ) i've had 3 trailering problems and 3 shows this year.... hmmm... slightly frustrating! but i'm DEFINATLY greatful none the less.

I'm going XC schooling tomarrow http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif which should be fun.

WE SURVIVED COPPER MEADOWS!!!!

Finished 17th out of 20 in Sr. BN Rider.

But we finished.

Dressage:
Prozac Pony ran off with me in warm-up, and I really worked on trying to get him calmed down. In the test, he bucked at the left lead canter depart, then swapped leads back & forth behind throughout the circle. Just as we were coming out of the circle, I heard a whistle, and stopped. I looked at the judge, who looked blankly back at me. We then established that it was the whistle for the other ring. They used whistles in both rings that were next to each other, and a bell in the ring that was farther away (eyeroll). So she said just to do the circle again, and continue. She kindly did not ding me for stopping (but she did ding us for the buck and lead-swapping - got a 4 on that movement).

Then in the right lead canter circle, he bucked through at least half of it. We got a 3 on that one - "resistance". Yeah, you could say he was resistant ;-)

Ended up with a 46, which actually isn't much worse than our usual 42-44ish scores. That put us in 17th. Better than last, I figure.

And I stayed on and persisted, and was laughing at the end - what else could I do?

And... my daughter, who had driven down from Berkeley to watch, told one of my friends/travelling companions that she was very proud of me for sticking the bucks and for continuing!!

X-C:
My trainer (actually Assistant Trainer, but the Uber Trainer wasn't there) AKA Queen of the Longe - she's SOOO much better at that than I am, and volunteered to work him for me, bless her heart - longed his happy little butt off Saturday morning, and he bucked and ran and bucked and ran - clearly should have done this before dressage!

Warmup was heinous. I really need to conquer the warmup ring. I think maybe I trotted the X twice and possibly cantered it once, and cantered or trotted the vertical once, and then bailed. Had 45 seconds notice that it was my turn (which was okay by me). Walked him into the start box, reminding him who buys the carrots, and pointing out that I was sure the other trainer at our barn would be happy to have him as a schoolie. Then we were off. Cantered the first "fence" (log on the ground). Cantered merrily up to the second fence, singing our X-C song, Marty Robbins' "Big Iron", to make myself breathe. The little sucker ducked out. Mind you, this fence is MAYBE 2' and very plain and inviting. So we trotted over it and continued.

3, 4, 5, gallop up the hill to 6, which was the first really scary fence for me (flat-top coop with flowers planted in the top). He ducked out AGAIN. I think he lost momentum at the top of the hill, and because I was somewhat uncertain about the fence, I didn't push him at it enough. So we circled around, trotted it, and went on to the water. I trotted through the water at my trainer's suggestion, because it's a little deeper than he's used to at home, and she thought it would tend to slow him down anyway.

And THEN... mirabile dictu... I THOUGHT. Fence 8 was a largish roll-top not far from the water, and I thought, "We should trot this, because he might just decide to run out again." And so we trotted it, and it was LOFFly, and then we cantered the rest of the course. My trainer said later that she was saying as she watched me, "I wonder if she's figured out that she can trot these fences yet... YES! She's figured it out!"

Fence 9 was a little ramp at the bottom of a hill, and he was okay to that, and then there was a longish gallop up a hill to a steeplechase fence. I thought about trotting that, but he seemed to be going okay. I did feel him look to the right (rock) and the left (jump judge) as we approached, sizing up his opportunities for escape, but I booted him over the middle of the fence, and then we turned for home. 11, 12, 13, and 14 were just great - nice pace, nicely out of stride. I was whooping and screaming like a banshee all the way.

Even with the two run-outs and trotting the water and fence 8, we were only 45 seconds over time, so I think we could have made time if I'd actually been RIDING the entire course. I had been wondering about that, because it was set at 350 mpm. But he moved forward when I asked him to, and slowed down when I asked him to.

I came off the course really, really, really wanting to go do it again, right then.

Stadium:
Same chaos in the warmup. It was Simply Too Much for me. The course was pretty straightforward - only 2 oxers, and a 5 or 6 stride and one sort of bending line that was 6 or 7 strides. He pulled the first rail because I was holding him back a little, but the rest of the fences were clean. We were 1 second over time (@ 300 mpm). I actually think we would have been better off with more oxers, hard as that is for me to believe.

So we finished with something like 109 penalty points, but the two riders behind me were both over 200, and there was one guy who retired on x-c.

BUT WE FINISHED!!!!

And I'm pretty sure that I heard the GWV cheering in the distance ;-)

Well, I read this thread all the time & now I just have to add to it!

This weekend boy & I completed Groton House I! It was more fun then I can type into words!! After a dire weather forecast, it actually was sunny most of the time (or at least not raining). Dressage went well, pretty much 7's across the board with a couple 6's & couple 8's. XC was a blast, nice rolling fields, beautiful jumps. We did have to use all 3 of our chances at the water complex, but ended up getting through and completing the course without any time penalties http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif (guess we were going faster then I thought)! Stadium was jumped cleanly & carefully. I haven't stopped smiling yet, I love my horse!!

There were so many friendly, helpful people there, including BarbaraG & her husband!! Thanks again to you and all the other volunteers that help to make eventing so great!!!!!

Went for my first lesson - as many of you know I have been asking for advice and ideas on how to get involved in eventing. - Thanks for all your sincere advice and well wishes http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

My first lesson, with my 3 year old gelding (a 30 minute dressage lesson) was a success. Thanks - ThirdCharm.

I was soooo nervous about trying to make this switch, and this was the first time that I had taken my boy - "Shy" anywhere.

Well - he was wonderful! Quiet, well mannered, rode wonderful - or as wonderful as I would expect a 3 yo. to ride.

Overall - a very positive and enlighting experience.

Got to love those goods days!

Woohoo, Kildare!

Welcome to The Dark Side ;-)

Isn't it amazing how much a good lesson can lift you up?

One of the great things I've found about eventing is that all three phases are never equally horrible - so if you're having a bad go at dressage, you can say, "Well, at least my stadium jumping is better than this..." ;-)

Plus there's always something new to learn. And if your brain is a sieve like mine, you can learn the same "new" thing over and over and over <g>

We have HAPPY NEWS!
We have HAPPY NEWS!
We have HAPPY NEWS!
We have HAPPY NEWS!

Prozac Pony and I won the Open Beginner Novice Derby Combined Test today at our annual "Get Up at a God-Awful Hour in the Morning to Finish Riding Before Your Tack Melts" schooling show.

So many good things about today:

We FINALLY broke 40 in dressage, after 3 1/2 years in the mid-40s, with an odd 50+ thrown in just for humiliation. Our 38 put us in 4th (out of 6 - there were originally 8 entries, but we had 2 scratches) after dressage.

We went double-clean in the derby phase (started with 3 fences in stadium, jumped out over a brush box onto the x-c course, did 8 fences out there, jumped back in over a log, and finished with 4 fences in stadium - it was a BLAST). We finished in 3:04 - opt time was 3:18, and speed fault time was 3:03... we were the only pair to go double-clean in the combined test. One girl who was doing the BN derby only as a schooling prep for the Novice combined test was double-clean at BN.

We had fun... we had fun... we had fun... we had fun...

We went double clear at our first Training! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I made a little mistake in dressage (forgot to HALT) but otherwise our test was world's better since our last outing. (a CT) Stadium was GREAT, but Gwen thought it was XC time and I think we did the course at 500 mpm! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif Knocked one rail hard and it BOUNCED out of its cup but landed back in. (whew!)

Cross country ROCKED. There were a couple of fences I was concerned about, but NOT SCARED, and Gwennie just ate it all up. We finished EXACTLY at our optimum time (took a long option and had no idea of her galloping pace...apparently 420-430 is a gear she gets into easily) but the big old grin started at fence 7 and didn't stop!

Fourth place overall, and Area Championships here we come! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Could have used the cannon after all, to scare away the free-ranging COWS, which Prozac Pony finds quite horrifying.

There were four in our group: a very experienced rider on a first-time-out 5 yo OTTB; another very experienced rider on a first-time out youngish paint mare; a velcro-butt kid on a relatively green QH who's been some places, but not many; and your truly on 11 yo supposed-to-be-placid Prozac Pony.

We were taking a brief trail-ride break along the Prelim x-c course between BN schooling sessions.

Care to guess who was most bothered by the cows? To the extent that he backed into poor paint maresy, who generously did not nail him with a well-deserved hoof?

Sigh...

But we got past the first bovine sighting (only 3 of them, more or less hidden in the underbrush), and were making our way back to the main part of the x-c course, when our Fearless Leader (mounted on the paint mare) suddenly said to me, "Look to the right. Don't look anywhere else. Look to the RIGHT."

Obediently, I whipped Prozac Pony around into a rather nice (if I do say so myself ;-) nose-to-the-(nonexistant)-wall leg yield, and kept my eyes straight between his ears. "There are cows off to the left, aren't there?" I asked. "Look to the right. Don't look anywhere else. Look to the RIGHT."

So I did. And then we were released from our leg yield, and it turned out that we had gone past not 3 cows, but about 10 of them.

*eyeroll*

I LOFF leaving the safe confines of our home barn.

But except for that bit of excitement, and the fact that PP wanted to fling his head between his knees and bolt whenever we went downhill, the schooling actually went pretty well. I was out of my comfort zone (but isn't that what schooling is for?) but I stayed on, and learned some things about handling PP on rolling terrain.

And then we had a potluck at a friend's house, and I ate far too much, but had a good time with good friends.

RAR- we have a cow farm on our "conditioning path".... o wow, took a few times to get the mare by it.

I was wondering- could my mare barrow some of your prozac? She was a nut ball this past weekend- that's what I get for having a mare in heat that traveled w/ a gelding- they had to be NOSE TO NOSE all weekend, or else she was acting like a kid with the most extreme ADHD that needed a cattle prod to seperate her from that boy- but after she tried to steal his grain he got mad at her, and "wouldn't talk to her" lol- quite a site. Especially when she pulled me over and dragged me on the ground- lol, darn slippery grass.

Needless to say i was very frustrated with her and fairly annoyed! It just added to the stress of the already stressed show that didn't go nearly as happy/planned as i wanted- BUT, we did get an 8 on our stretchy walk with very nice ACCURATE comments from the judge. And, I figured out how to ride through our XC issue- tho we didnt get the clear we needed to qualify for the canadian 3-day http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif. but after she got her butt kicked in, the 2nd half of the course was great. Next show we'll get it right! i look at it as- last show we recognized the issue, this time i figured out how to ride through the issue- and next time the issue will be fixed (knock on wood). I'm happy that she was in shape, and inspite of our 4 circles for various reasons (run outs, better approach to dif. numbered jumps and stuff, etc.) we were only 10 seconds out of the optimum time with the faster canadian speed.

I'm happy that i didn't shoot myself this weekend. does that count as happy news? http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I enjoyed the fireworks during our late night drive home and the amusing guy at the bridge that made us laugh

my friend and I were wondering what he would have done if when he asked "Is that hay back there?" we had responded "no, it's a big bale of pot- the horses just LOVE it!!!!"

we laughed about that for a good long time.

Horse shows are so.... humbling. I love my mare http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif and I can't wait to see her tonight. Talk to her about going prelim someday. I'm thinkin she can do it http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

well- that was some happy news mixed with some "mehhh????" news. Kinda works. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Also went and had a fantastic gallop with Clue out on the trails, hit all the banks, ditches, logs, brush, etc. we could find, and even did the ever-scary downhill hay bales to the tires to the Big Huge Drop! He was feeling great, I laughed most of the ride!

Spectacular news... clean Xrays!

My horsie has been in a stall for 3 weeks after a nasty kick to his front left cannon bone... big puncture wound, possible hairline fracture... Xray results today are clean, cannon bone looks perfect, wound is healing well and he'll be just fine in no time! Yippee!

We went on a trail ride this morning with 4 others from our barn, and Prozac Pony was a Very Good Boy (because he was allowed to be the leader - he likes that).

We saw a manner of wildlife - bunnies, ground squirrels, lizards, birds, two javelinas, golfers, mountain bikers, joggers...

Got a super job offer this morning...not sure if I will take it (I have been at this company for nine years so will have to think long and hard!), but it's still great to know that I am a commodity needed in this market!

This weekend is 4th and final wedding for the summer...the last three I was maid of honor, this one I am bridesmaid!

And....drum roll please....we are riding the ponies to the river next to the beach on Sunday!!

Ok, my vet came yesterday and said I can start TROTTING my boy! Wahooo http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Even though our "walks" up to now have mostly been a spook, then a canter away bucking, it's good to know that now I'm ALLOWED to do a bit more than walk! hehe. He just wants to show me how good he feels, though yesterday he took it a bit too far! We had to have quite a discussion, so we shall see how he is today!

What else... I'm going tommorow to Stuart (no, I'm not riding http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/cry.gif) to visit some of my bestest buds ever! I may do some grooming and such at the event, but mostly it's going to be a girls weekend! Yay http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

My other pony is back in work and is looking quite marvelous (knock on wood!), so that too is encouraging...

This is a good way to start the morning, I'm in a much better mood than when I woke up! haha. Ok, time for coffee and barn work... http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

GWV - wish all the competitors and volunteers good luck at Stuart Horse Trials this weekend. This week we've had some wonderful ground softening rain for the horses. I took a hack last night and did a little trot and canter work and the ground was ABSOLUTELY springy! Weather is supposed to be pretty dry and not really hot and humid either so it should make for a wonderful horse trial.http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I'll be at my usual spot in the X-C warm-up ring on Saturday and the stadium warm-up ring on Friday for the Novice riders. On Friday I'll be attempting to train new people just what to do in the warm-up area.

Other, but not horse related news, is that my company is planning to lay off about 3000 workers locally and 4500-6000 nationally. They will be offering early retirement packages to some groups. Please pray that they offer it in MY area as I would love to be able to retire early and enjoy the farm and the ponies. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

This morning, day 3 of using the new dressage-legal Myler bit,

my hands were steady

Prozac Pony's head was steady

the reins were connecting my hands to his head

and we were TROTTING!!!!

I've seriously never felt that before. I'm a-likin' this bit. Still some things to work out with it, and some new leg muscles to develop to be able to steer more with my legs than my hands, but it was a first, and a good step in the right direction.

Big Deal Happy News for Us!

Best of luck to everyone at Stuart this weekend on the springy turf.

More good news for us - we had a x-c lesson yesterday, and we jumped the Novice golfer's bench! <wild applause and much whooping>

It's not a huge bench - I'm not even positive that it's bigger than BN dimenions, but even our trainer, who likes to push a bit at schooling shows so things will look less malignant at real shows, doesn't include it in our BN courses.

It was a big deal for us, especially since there's a bench (smaller) on the BN course at Flagstaff, and when we tried it 2 years ago, Prozac Pony ducked out.

So now I'm feeling much more comfortable about Flagstaff, just under 3 weeks away.

After a rough start to this season and one disastrous XC school in April, we decided to stay home and do our homework. To prepare for upcoming HT's, I took Bailey to school XC last night. Now granted it was a very tiny XC course, he was wonderful! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif We first schooled over the stadium course and he never batted an eye. On the XC course he was just as good. It feels great to have my "brave boy" back!
We hadn't jumped in almost a month due to vacation and my husband's emergency appendectomy the night we got home from Hawaii, (long story there http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif). i guess im a LITTLE late on this thread, hehe, but i have been hanging out in the h/j thread....

my good news is: i started physical therepy yesterday for my broken leg, and i should be able to get back in the saddle by the time im at college, which is aug 22!! This was a huge deal because if i couldnt ride, then i wouldnt be able to be in the eq class that is a prerquisite for every other riding class you have to do, and its only offered in the fall, so if i couldnt ride in it i would have been put a year behind! But now i will be walking without crutches within the next three weeks, and also able to ride (read this as mount and walk around) but its better than nothing, and i wont get behind in college... so im excited http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

And also, i will hopefully actually begin my eventing career next spring... but its hard when i have no horse... so we will see!

We are safely home from Over The Walls (WOW!! What a great event! Well done to everyone who volunteered there this weekend and a HUGE thanks!!) despite blinding rain for a good portion of the trip. Ruby handled the trip well (he's one of those sensitve horses who can go off of eating/drinking etc if the wind blows right) and coped well with rather electric atmosphere of such a big event. And even though he was 31st after dressage (but only 7 pts of the top 10), he and Tom finally turned the speed on on XC and picked themselves up to 19th. Not really sure what are final standing was...we left rather shortly after stadium.

Glad to home! Missed my other horses and my dog, and I am feeling hugely inspired to work on all of Elf's and my problems while we are home between OTW and Millbrook.

Great job everyone!

I am happy to report that I have the bravest, wonderfullest, honest-est and sweetest pony!

We had another great weekend at Hunters Run: clear rounds XC and stadium (I think one time penalty in stadium?) and that includes 3 of my least-favorite jumps, all of which Gwen did great: trakehner, Weldon's Wall, open ditch. Slowly, ever so slowly, my courage is growing back!

Plus, I think she really thinks I'm her "mom" now...she nickered at me every time I went to check on her, and even came when I called when I had her turned out yesterday! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif No doubt she was angling for more pretzels, but I think we've really "bonded" this summer.

One more clean XC and we're off to the Training 3-day and http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif qualified for Prelim! Could it be that that doesn't seem so impossible any more??? USEA's qualifications may be one thing, but I sure as heck am not going to feel qualified until I can ride EVERY FENCE on a Training course according to plan, instead of the 3/4 or so I've been averaging! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif The fun part is actually HAVING a plan for a course that goes beyond "survive" and "finish". http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Went today to watch a friend and her horse compete at a schooling combined test. This horse had been seriously knocked around before my friend got her, and it has been a long, hard road. The mare was lovely, finished second in dressage and show jumped like the princess she is. Well, today- the most amazingly beautiful day I can remember seeing in a loooooong time- I took my horse, who's had 2 years off (besides the past 4 months when I've put him back to work) due to stifle problems, over to Ledyard to play around. He was that happiest boy you've seen!

He was absolutely perfect and cruised around and jumped all the stuff. Up and down the banks, over the ditches and that hideous weldon's wall, in and out of the water- you name it, he did it! He had barely been off the farm in 2 years, and he didn't put a foot wrong! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif It was so fun to be back out there with him again after so long! Such a good boy!! Just thought I'd share- I'm beaming http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/winkgrin.gif

More happy news - Nicky (who is now 90 days under saddle) is now officially a trailer-riding pro. She and Pete (my old horse) hopped on the trailer to go to a local horse park for a trail ride. Pete threw fits once we got there, Nicky looked around, had a big sigh, and went right to work. What a star!

Happy neighbor news, too - the irate man in my yard complaining about the horse poop in the road http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/uhoh.gif backed off immediately when I just smiled and said "no problem, we'll go clean it up right now!" Kind of fun to spoil someone's rant!

I took my guy to a dressage + CT show yesterday - (Dana Hill in NH...anyone else there?), and he was FABULOUS!!! He really needed to go and do a few tests in a row so he could learn to relax in the arena, and he did it with style - we came home with ribbons in every class we entered http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif 3rd place in Training Test 3, 4th place in Training Test 4, 1st place in First Level Test 1, and second place in our Training level combined test (with a 33 on our dressage!)

Today I celebrated my one year anniversary working for Tom! It has been quite the year with tons of ups and downs, both in the barn and personally...but none the less, it has been fabulous and we both agreed that I need to stay for many more years.

Also, Ruby made a HUGE improvement in his dressage this weekend at Loudon. He scored a 32 (down from mid to low 40s) to lead through most of his division. Rainey Seally be Ruby and Tom by 1 point after stadium....too bad about Ruby's silly run out at fence 4....but he will be fabulous this weekend at Menfelt and spectacular at Morven!

You are right, Barb, my good news on the "Who wants to write off 2003 thread" does belong here.

Although I thought I'd previously added that I had (hopefully) smoked my last cigarette at the end of January. This from a 2 pack/day smoker of 40 yrs.

Other great news, and this is horse related actually, is the mortgage was paid off the end of May so the farm is now mine - free and clear.

Third good news is my company is offering early retirement packages for those of us that are retirement eligible. My actual retirement date wouldn't come up for a couple of yrs but since they are offering a yrs pay, I can see no sense in working the next 2 yrs for 1/2 pay so I will be gainfully UNEMPLOYED, effective 11/30/2003!!!!!!!!!!!

Just have to brag a bit - went to a dressage schooling show yesterday and took home two red ribbons! Got scores of 63.4 and 61.3 on Training 2 and 4. In each test, the person taking the blue was a trainer. In Training 2 it was MY trainer on her Dutch Warmblood and then in 4 it was a last minute switch as the owner was scared to ride her TB, so the trainer popped on. My beloved creature is a QH type Pinto and dressage is not his favorite thing. He got lots of carrotts!

Only down side was that it was HOT and humid and my trainer says that "jackets waived" does not apply to me! Had to peel that sucker off.

Yes Ma'am! I'm happy! http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/yes.gif Through the generosity of the GWV and the GP, the wonderful organization of the King Oak Farm Horse Trials, and the efforts of my horse (despite the issues we've had) this old bat has the honor of winning the King Oak Master's Trophy (OT)! I was thrilled when Barbara called last night, and a quite unseemly celebration ensued when I hung up the phone. Mr. FA had gone out with me for both spring and fall KOs this year, and was sporting a big grin http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif, the dogs were jumping all over the place, and you may rest assured that Miss V has gotten lots of carrots this morning.

I went to Kingsbury Hill yesterday (only our 3rd event since April, due to all the various lameness cr*p this summer http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/dead.gif), ran around the OT course, and we had a GREAT day! So-so dressage, but still an improvement over earlier this year, good showjump (I didn't balance well enough to a downhill oxer and had a rail, but totally my fault), and a FUNFUNFUN XC round - he was a star, and we went double clear http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif The best part of the whole day was that, for the first time, we did all 3 phases in a loose ring french link snaffle! And highly effecitve it was!!! 7th out of 17 (SrBNR) after dressage with a 41.5 - our best test ever at a show of this size and quality.

Clean stadium, with 3 time faults (I'm still wondering where those came from...), leaving us tied for 6th.

Double clean cross country (almost TOO fast - we loped over the last fence & the finish line in true hunter fashion to avoid a speeding ticket), leaving us with a final placing of 5th.

Woo-hoo!!!!

THANKS, FA. It was a thrill. He has not forgotten how. I still cannot see a distance from his back, he still has a jump that clears the fence by at least 2'. He was so pleased with himself. It was too cute. Think he'll run Intermediate again? He's only 17. I think maybe I'll set Novice as a goal for next Spring. But there is still the risk that he'll kill me in the warm-up. I thought of some more (belated) Happy News:

Yesterday morning, I realized that my reluctance to run XC on Sunday in Copper Meadows was a result of not wanting to mess up and lose my placing, as opposed to not wanting to die... my usual pre-XC mode ;-)

That's progress, right?

Well.....this is a big deal for me.. I was riding my spooky, stubborn little appy to my new house this morning (its only about a 1/4 of a mile away, but it was windy and SNOWY) when he noticed a puddle along side the road and refused to go by. Instead of indulging his temper, I let him look for a minute and then pushed him past it. I am a dyed in the wool coward, so this was a major accomplishment. He, being the kind of guy he is (don't get mad, get even) spooked at something else about 100 feet after that and gave me a lovely , almost breathtaking capriole! Lucky for me I was in my dressage saddle http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif and stayed with him. I did however, lose a stirup so I used the opportunity to give him a good appreciative kick and continued to make him move forward. 5 minutes later we were at my new house without incident. I am delighted that I not only survived, but that I was able to push him forward successfully. Not bad for an old chicken heart!

Bailey and I had an OK outing at our HT this weekend. Dressage was a disaster, but he jumped very bold. Finished 6 of 12. http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/uhoh.gif
Last night we went to an XC schooling at the same course and he was GREAT! OK, a little hyper, but I understand why. He has finally figured out what to do with his body and how to jump like a horse. He is so smug and proud of himself that he has to show off. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif Anyway, we jumped 2'3" at the HT on Sat and last night we schooled all of the 2'7" (except on table that I didn't like). Yea! The greatest thing is that it really didn't seem any bigger. Maybe I am figuring out this jumping thing too! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Just got back from a great riding vacation at Acadia National Park. We're all refreshed for the final tune-up for UNH - our first novice eventtogether (I expect to be turning in my pinny with a big smile, GWV). AND, tomorrow we have a dressage lesson with Judy Westlake, so I expect to go into the ring on Saturday poised and relaxed!

After UNH (10/14), we get to have Eric Horgan at our barn for a clinic (flat and/or gymnastics). In fact, there may still be room if anyone is interested. Barn is in Epping, NH. I rode once with Eric this spring and really liked him.

Well, my happy news is that Palais is starting 10 mins of trotting after a 3 month layup from a suspensory....But since nothing ever goes right with me and my luck, my new guy Sam (who I've had for about 2 months) has been off the last 3 weeks due to a corn bruise which still has heat and cannot have a shoe on yet. We're going to Morven Park on Monday to find out once and for all what this thing is. Of course, Sam had done like, 3 CCI**, some CCI*'s, and some CIC's, plus advanced, and never had a problem http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif It seems horses come to me to be layed up for months on end!

Anyways, I'm glad you all are getting happy news. Maybe next year I can join you if I ever get to Prelim or even get a full season of events in.

I know BarbaraG, it's just so frustrating. I have this wonderful, experienced horse in my barn and he can't even be ridden because of something as miniscule as a corn bruise. And of course, Palais' injury she's coming back from is her second layup in the three years we've had her (the other one was 7 months). I just feel like I can't seem to get my foot in the door, and actualy get to an event, if not have an actual season of it. I'm sorry if I sound whiney, but it really is frustrating!

Lindsay,
I know just how you feel - I'm at the end of my second season with my boy that I haven't gotten to more then 3 shows in because he's had so many minor issues (lame for a few weeks, etc) - I was supposed to go to the Bruce D clinic at King Oak this weekend, but we've been minus a shoe for a week, and not enough foot to tack one back on!
BUT my horse and I have grown so much closer with all of the "downtime" we've spent together, I'm counting on it to get us through whatever tough spots we may encounter at our FULL season of competition next summer.

Hang in there, and give Sam a kiss for me - he's such a sweetie!!

Yippee - Cygnus and I did our first novice event at UNH this weekend and are both VERY happy with ourselves. Dressage in a grass arena in the pouring rain - about the 50th horse in the arena (who said you couldn't see the tracks in grass!) - deep conditions did pretty much suck the canter right out of him (oh well). But wind overnight and sun and wind on Sunday made the cross country and stadium conditions quite good. We only had trouble at one xc fence that appeared too suddenly for him around a bend, but recovered nicely to complete the course (including two drops, ditch and drop into water) with no further problems! Got to introduce ourselves to GWV & GP with the promised smile. Stadium was clean. We finished seventh in our division (purple looks great on a black horse!). And lucky us - UNH was only 20 minutes from the barn, so we got home in daylight and I was able to turn Cygnus out for a much deserved roll.

Also, I'd like to thank #157 in my division who talked me out of obsessing about the biggest jump on xc and who walked the stadium course with me Saturday night! We hadn't met before and decided to stay a little anonymus (numbers not names), but gave each other little pep talks everytime we saw each other. It truly is a sport of friendly people!

Ok, think happy, think happy....well we took same to Morven today and he had x-rays that showed that all he still has is a corn bruise and thin soles and underrun heals like most TBs. Not the worst news right?

Anyways, goals for next year include one training to start and a FULL season of prelim (hahaha, full season? never had one), followed by maybe a CCI* at Morven if not the VA CCI* in the spring of 2005. For Palais, keep going with training, maybe finally get a full season in. We might work on our dressage and try some 1st/2nd level shows. Now I've learned from the past that planning ahead is NOT a good idea for me! Everything always seems to go wrong!

I'll share...

My 15h Pinto and I kicked some TB butt this past weekend and won our Beginner Novice division at a schooling HT! We've been working with a dressage trainer to improve our "dancing", as my husband calls it, and it's starting to pay off. My little guy is not naturally very round and through, but when it comes to jumping, he's the energizer bunny. We were clean in stadium and clean and 31 seconds under optimum time on xc!

And I just started this fun sport last year at the very young age of 54!

Hey, congrats, ZM! Good going. I just joined the over 50 club on Monday. It is somewhat shocking to have that number apply to ME!! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Oh Pol, Happy Birfday!!

And you don't look a day over 49!! http://chronicleforums.com/images/custom_smilies/lol.gif

THe rule is until the eldest child turns 29, you are 29, then it jumps to 39 until the eldest turns 39...so on and so forth. So you shouldn't turn 50 for, oh, at least another 20 to 30 years! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

CG- That is a great rule. Being as how my eldest is 25, I have miles to go!
FA, thinking about a jaunt to Crane's this wknd...Going to have a chat with the Trustees this afternoon! Mr. Pol wants to come along (on his feet) I think so he can call the ambulance when Mikey sees the sea! http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Uh-oh, Mr Frugal and I have to attend a meeting on the Cape (I'd rather be home) so I can't join you. Unless you want to wait for Monday or Tuesday? Check the Boston tides: Ipswich is exactly the same and you should plan to be there within 1 hour of low tide (+/-). If I don't see you, fill us in !

My good news. My boy has been having breathing problems and they seemed to have gotten much better after taking him of Dengi! Now if the vet could only figure out why he is coughing all the time.

Maybe the hay..or bedding you use is causing your horse to cough?? http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif Just a thought.

Hope he's all better soon!

My happy news is my filly is going well under saddle and has shown me that she has no qualms about heading out on a trail all by herself! Future event horse for sure.

First schooling HT of the season at our barn on Sunday!

And the weather has finally broken (knock wood), so it's possible to be outside when the sun is shining without melting.

I would expect nothing less, BarbaraG <G>

You and the Ground Pounder really need to get away from those dreadful NE winters, come to Arizona for a reprieve...

Cygnus and I are looking forward to showing a couple of dressage riders in our barn the joys of hacking tomorrow! I'm very excited that they are taking the plunge - while those (endless) circles are certainly important to do, the trails are so revitalizing! Anyway, we're going to sandwich the two greenies between two "tried and trues" to go check out fall foliage. I think we'll come back with a couple of new addicts.
