View Full Version : Rhino/Flu Vaccination - How Often Do You Give It?

I have heard differing opinions and just wondering looking for some more input.
Do you give the Rhino/Flu vaccination once a year, twice a year, or more often than that?
WHY do you do the option that you do?

Every 6 months. It must be administered every 6 months to be effective. It is required by many facilities to be up-to-date with the Rhino vaccine, which is my main reason for doing it so often.

Spring and fall for my non-breeding ones. Pregnant mares get it at 5, 7, 9 months' gestation and then again about 2-4 weeks before their due date.
Why? Because that is the general consensus and the advice of my vet. :)

To be effective, it should be 6x per year. That is why we do every 2 months for pregnant mares. Prime coverage is 2 months, with some waning coverage for another month.
It is rare to see other horses get them that often, so,
Once a year - unprotected for 9-10 month
Twice a year - unprotected for 7-8 months
;)
The vaccines we have available are not effective against the Neurological form of Rhino, just the minor cold type.

Every 3 months, year-round (4x per year). Horses travel a lot, and there are broodmares on the property.

Spring and Fall for riding horses/retirees. Additional 5,7,9 mos for pregnant mare (she gets Intervet's vaccine though). Ideally all the horses she comes in contact with would be on her schedule.

Wow am I totally out of the loop? I only do it once a year and this has been the case with most people I know and the barns I have worked at.
Is it different in Canada?

I find rhino such a tough call whether to vaccinate for or not, especially when your horse doesn't do all that well on that particular vaccine and one is not competing.
Overseas it was quite common not to vaccinate for rhino unless you were competing (FEI requirement).
The vaccine doesn't protect against the neurological form and horses can overcome the common cold-form.
But if you are going to vaccinate then it's either every 3 months or not imo.
So considering I'm not competing, private farm, no horses coming nor going and horse does not do well after rhino vaccine, I don't vaccinate for rhino.
If I were to board then that would be another story.
As for pregnant mares, I would vaccinate, as you don't want them to abort.

It depends on which strain of Rhino you are rvaccinating against. Pregnant mares get the Pneumabort K shot (totally spelled that wrong I'm sure) and I don't remember which strain that vaccinates against. The "standard" Rhino shot my horses get twice a year. The flu shot they get, which I get from my vet, is given 1x a year.

Most racetracks require it every 90 days but it can not be within 10 days of shipping or racing so we end up giving it every 60 to 90 days.

Spring and fall if they aren't pregnant or traveling. Travelers get it every 90 days, broodies get 5/7/9/3-4 weeks before due date and post foaling/pre rebreeding they get MLV.
I use Rhinomune, Flu-Avert IN, and PneumabortK

Mine get it spring and fall and then get a booster in the summer. All of our showing is done between March and September, hence the booster. But I also have my own barn and they don't do much traveling in the winter.
I actually boarded at the barn in Maryland that had the neurological outbreak about 5 years ago. Killed 7 horses I believe and another went neurological but survived it.

I'm also located near the Md outbreak region.
Alot of shows in this area still require 90 day proof.
Although if they did their research they would know it doesn't prevent the Neuro.
