View Full Version : DO ANY OTHER BLANKETS STAY ON LIKE A RAMBO

I have stuck with Rambo and Rhino blankets for years because of the way they stay on without leg straps which I hate. I keep reading in here about other blankets people like but I hesitate because of this issue. I would be very interested in other people's experience with non Rambo/Rhino products that stay squarely on a horses back without leg straps.

Amigo, my horse has never ever lost an amigo blanket and he is always rolling and running.

isn't amigo made by horsewares, the company that makes rambo and rhino?

Horseware Ireland has led the pack for a LONG time. I'd call that proof in pudding.
But don't go by "just" that. Go, spend your hard earned/trust fund cash on the rest & then come back to toot Rambo/Amigo/Rhino's horn. (pun intended)

My old girl has a co-op brand blanket. I got it for her because its thick and i hate leg straps too so I took them off. And it stays on. I have had it for 3 years now and its still going strong!

Rambo. They stay put on my crazy TB with no shifting. I have the Wugs with the leg arches if it matters....but my original green Rambo from 15 yrs. ago is still going strong!

I don't have any Rambos, but I've got some 11 y.o. Rhino turnouts that are still going strong (and staying put)!

To answer your question OP, NO, there aren't any blankets that stay on or live as long as the Rhino/Rambos.:D I've tried LOTS of other brands and have decided that I'm never spending another dime on a blanket or sheet unless it's a Rhino or a Rambo. I haven't tried their Amigo brand yet, so can't comment.

For cheaper 'almost as good' turnouts, I think Dover's Rider's are a good value.

My Baker heavyweight is going strong 4 years with 2 energetic TBs. I can honestly say that the Baker has NEVER moved or come off either of my horses. Ever.
At the moment it is on my stall-rested TB, who insists on rolling 2 or 3 times every time his stall is cleaned. Never moves an inch.

I was given a very nice Centaur blanket (thank you Louise) that stays on well. It has leg straps, which my TB isn't crazy about but he will tolerate them
Louise also gave me her Rhino medium weight and an unligned Rhino and they don't move no matter what he does - and they don't pull on his shoulders! They are terrific.
I was lucky enough to find a heavy-weight Rambo on Ebay for 70 dollars! I just love them.

Ages ago I won for around 20 bucks or so a Gatsby heavy weight turnout, on ebay, from Horseloverz, and it's going strong - fits perfect, never shifts, keeps him dry in rain, never got a single tear or rip - still looks brand new, cleans up with hose-off like it just came out of the package. Straps are still new, no rust or bend. My old guy is rough on everything, this blanket is fantastic. I also like Dover's Rider International sheets.
Hate Pessoa - UGH! I have a stable blanket that fits OK, but it STINKS!!!! Any manure at all on it, and that stench reeks to high heaven. Don't hope to clean it, the next roll in a stall it's back to being unbearable. Hate any fleece sheets, as layers or alone. They all ride back on the horse eventually, pulling on the chest, hanging off the tail end.
For good value and great fit and durability, go Gatsby or RI.

I have a Baker turnout too. It's great, but unless you find a great deal, buy the Rhino or Rambo!

Have to say I haven't been impressed with the Rhino and Amigos we've tried. This is a horse who has to wear a blanket any time he is outside because he has no fur on the topline from burns in a barn fire. He is easy on blankets and doesn't spend his time trying to trash them. He does roll a bit :)
I can't say enough about the Centaur Irish Knits we used for the first year after the fire (late 2004). We used these as bandages and they were worn for 24 hours and switched to another while the first was brought home, washed w bleach then double rinsed and hung to dry. They lasted more than a year under this treatment
The Weatherbeetas (light and mid-weight) we've had have all fit great and lasted incredibly well. We are still using the ones we bought in 2004 switching them out for cleaning when needed (Rhino and Amigo fit less well - size change would not have made them fit better). I think the Rhino lasted 2 weeks before it caught on something and ripped out the side. The Amigo was only used a few time over a couple of months with same result. While I bought them on sale, no way did I get my money out of them especially compared to the sale Weatherbeetas
For my money, I'm sticking with Weatherbeetas for my horse. Of course, your results may differ.

The Amigo's fit well (bought two sheets) but they don't hold up like the real thing....
Weatherbetta's have always rubbed our TB's and WB's raw w/o shoulder guards. The Rambo's never have.

I think it also depends on the actual shape of your horse. Some horses are just made differently! I've had bad luck with the durability of the original Rambos (both mid and light weights- no leg arches) on one of my OTTBs (the insides shredded like tissue paper), but was just admiring my other OTTB's newer original midweight with leg arches yesterday. He'd been wearing it for 2 years and it didn't have so much as a thread loose in it... until this morning :( He got it off this morning before I fed and KILLED it. He magically undid the front hooks and velcro, got it off (probably with a little help from his buddy), then shredded the inside and pulled out all the insulating filling. When I saw him, he was swinging it around by his teeth! Of my 3 horses, he is the one who needs a blanket the most. Oh well, at least I was able to find a new one in Louisville- on sale even :)

they only slip slide or fall off it you dont measure your horse properly
aand if the rug has a low neck line it can walk out off
so measure your horse from wither to tail
chest to tial and then wither to elbow
buy a rug with a high neck line - with or without hood attachment
and also one that has darted or pleated schoulders
then adjust all straps ie belly and legs to the correct lenght the legs not to got below the hocks but above the hocks in the middle so the horse can do a correct stride at the hinds, the fillet strap or string to be adjusted just underneath the tail to hold the sides in place
the chest straps to be adjusted to correct position so horse has room to move
yet not come apart
if how ever the belly or legs straps are to long and flluy afjusted to th ends
as in short and you still have play after x them over then cross them agian
with legs straps link one leg strap into the other one

No cheaper than Rambo (but that's not what you asked), the FAL blankets fit the exact same, no leg straps, don't go anywhere, and wear like nails. One Goliath I have made it through 8 MI winters without a dent or rewaterproofing and is as good as new. I do love my Rambos too, much easier to obtain in the US.

Call me crazy and the odd one out, but I despise Rambo/Rhino and will never ever buy one. The ones I've dealt with were crap, and I've dealt with a LOT of them over the years at many barns I've worked at (think 25+ different bankets).....velcro wearing down, buckles breaking, those disgusting tail straps, liners slipping away from the Duo, neck hoods coming undone.
No thank you Rambo/Rhino. :dead:
I've had much success with my Schneider's Stormshields and Weatherbeetas. Since I've had those on my horses, they have never shifted at all....and I mean, at all. My cheap Schnieders and Weatherbeetas look brand new after a few years, no worn velcro or broken buckles, and they stay firmly in place on my horses.

That's interesting. I've had the opposite experience. Weatherbeetas have rubbed all of my horses and not lasted at all as far as construction goes. Schneider's have not been durable, fallen apart, poor construction and they haven't been waterproof. I had a whole saga/thread about that one though. I am not saying you're wrong or anything it's just interesting because I, unfortunately, have had the opposite experience.

I think the majority of the comments tell the story. Rambo and Rhino are unique and the highest quality. I have all Rambo and Rhinos and they are 15+ years old. I would NEVER use anything else!

I always thought they were ridiculously overpriced. A week ago a friend ordered one and it was HUGE on her little QH, so she sold it to me for $60 (!!!!) because she just wanted to buy another one ASAP and didn't feel like returning it. After using it on my TB, I LOVE them, and would agree they are well worth the money. He is as snug as a bug. I love the no leg strap deal, the only gross thing is he keeps gathering terds on his tail strap so I have to shake it off and wash it every time I take it off of him. Very nice blanket though, and hasn't budged an inch on him.

Here is my 2 cents. No, not all horses will fit their measurments goeslikestink!
I have ten horses, and have been on a graduate degree research mission to find them blankets that fit. From a 13.3 pony up to a 18 hand percheron. It has been so time consuming, especially for the ponies and the drafts to find a good fit. I find chest is really important fit. Its not just the size of the blanket, but more importantly how it is cut. Unfortunately, many companies customer service don't have a clue.
One company that stands out is netequestrian.com...I have spoken to two people, and they know their blankets. I will be buying from them due to their expertise and help.
Amigos are narrowly cut in the chest. Won't buy them again, even for my tb or sb's. Too tight, and I have narrow, slim tb and sb's.
Weatherbeetas are good, orican fits a wider chested, more muscled horse. Narrower horses are best with the freestyle new landa's...the one with the wide tail covering. they have a dart system and fit tighter around the neck.
So, for example, an 84 orican will fit my draft horse, but an 84 landa will not fit him around his chest, comes up too high on his neck where the chest buckles straps are. But, the landa is perfect for my sb's and TB.
I am about to try the rambo xl for my drafts. I really don't want the expense, but I want turn out blankets for them!
I did try the shires typhoon, only shires I'd buy since it has the nylon lining. It fit my 84 horse, but when I tried it on my 87 horse, it was too long in the length, but fit him half way up his neck. Not good. He is less muscly than my 84, so who knows whats up with that.
I was all set to order the shires highlander, but it is a cotton lining.
I will only buy nylon linings.
Ok, so thats my take on amigos, and the different weatherbeetas and the shires, which seem to have the oddest fit of all.
Oh, and Schneiders...only did the big fellas, no other styles. Fit my 87 and 92 horse, but did not like their v shape, and seam down the back. The v fit just seemed like it could cause rubs.
I am going to order their other style, which is more like a weatherbeeta for the smaller horses.
I have also used Dover's riders, and like them ok, they are like a wb, and seem to fit fairly well. Only have them in turnout sheets though.

Being the blanket whore that I am and blanketing most all the horses & ponies in the barn with my personal blankets I have tried most all brands.
No matter if the horse is 14 hands or 17.2 H a welsh pony or a WB Weatherbeetas do not fit any of our horses. They slide, the are cut odd in the front, even with actual size they still hang off the bums. The sheets are not durable. On the blankets the tail flap is positioned odd. They are just not for me or my horses.
Masta ... yes, I love these blankets but they are not for the playful horse because they shift! Durable and warm, waterproof - good for quieter horses.
I love Bakers of all kinds, they do not shift, no rubs on my horses, durable. (However, the stable blankets are shaving magnets, hate that)
SS Tacks blankets are nice wearing wise but they are so unappealing, my horses look "cheap" in them even though the are not too cheap! :)
Dover is a hit or miss for me with their blankets. Fit some great, others not at all. I LOVE their heavy weight stable blanket (the black/maroon/beige trim one)
Horse Logic brand is not really known but I have a few and they are fabolous blankets!
Triple Crown is one of my old old all I ever used when I was younger-favorites. Quality all the way!
Big D - Another that I think is "ok" but not my horses style ;)
Anything SLT stinks :) shifty shift all day long!
HIB - love love love! These are great blankets! Second favorite of mine!
Onto the Horseware! I do not like their day sheets but I 15th the fact that Rambo's/Rhino's truly are theeeee best blankets ever. I love them, fit all my horses, I love the front buckles. I like that I don't have to use leg straps, I despise leg straps on anything. They are worth the $$, I like the older ones although the quality is still just as great within the new ones.

Yeah, I bought my Schneider's blankets a few years ago, back before they started having problems. I'm glad I did, because mine look brand new...no tears, broken hardware, still very waterproof. Stays put, and love the V-Free and seam. I actually will probably try the Dover Northwinds next time I need blankets, because of the declining quality of Schneiders this past year everybody's had issues with....it's such a shame, because they used to be so good.
I have 2 of the cheapo Saxon blankets from Weatherbeeta, and I'll be damned if they haven't held up great....talk about a good $60 bargain, lol.
I know I'm in the minority of Rambo haters, lol. A few people at my current barn use them, and they seem to hold up well for them. Everybody has a personal preference. :)

Oh, we had our first Rambo rub the other day..... I'll never buy one again....
It was dark and we put the larger Rambo Wug on the smaller horse and the smaller Wug on the larger horse... The larger horse had a rub and that's all HWI's fault for making both those blankets dark blue with a gray stripe!!
[sarcasm off] lol
