Anyone with any experience? I have a coming two year old colt that must have sustained an injury to the lower penis. He has a raw spot on it and above that a large, orange shaped hematoma. Vet was out and lanced it (we couldn't syringe it) there is a lot of thickened skin. He can retract it up minus about 6" as the skin can't get it up in there. He is keeping it moderately warm. We were worried about frost bite.

This colt has had a rough few weeks. He dropped weight dramatically followed by three days of cow flop diarrhea. Vet came out, I had dewormed with Zimecterin Gold and put him on probiale and the diarrhea cleared up. She feels he has encysted strongyles and we are going to Power Pack him starting tomorrow. Since the Z Gold his appetite returned and he's perky. This boy is on a regular deworming program and the rest of his herd looks great! I'm not 100% certain we are dealing with a colt that has worms and then had a penis injury but the vet truly feels they are not related.

We are treating each problem separately. I'm just glad the runs are done and the appetite is back. Hematoma I'm just to keep an eye on and am praying avidly that we don't need to amputate part. I just don't know how I will do that (well not me but the vet).

Anyone have similar stories? Of course this is the colt I have slated to keep for myself.

He'll probably be fine, though it may take a couple of months. Keep him away from um, "occasions of sin" as the nuns used to say in elementary school. Follow your vet's recommendations to the letter, of course.

I heard of a breeding stallion who was kicked as he tried to serve a mare. His penis swelled to the size of a football and the poor guy must have been miserable till the swelling went down. He lived to love again.

The frostbite thing has me giggling. Not funny for HIM, though.

Fur-lined jock strap?

Sorry...

If he's wearing a decent turn-out sheet or blanket with enough coverage to protect his boy-parts from cold winds he'll be OK.

Poor fellow - give him my sympathies.

We had a gelding once who tried to jump out of his stall and became high centered. It was a good thing we were out there early because there he was stuck for who knows how long. We dismantled the door and called the vet who gave him some shots for pain. He did get very swollen, but luckily was none the worse for wear. Just us.

Well this is all good. Yes I have two blankets on him a stable and then a turnout. He was not staying warm enough with one. Remember he was anemic, poor boy. So I think that those are blocking in some warmth. I have him in a big stall also. She mentioned turnout but it's been so darn cold. I've had him in for a few days and am going to turn him into the barnyard tomorrow. He has lots of room to move around. Heated water bucket and all the hay he can eat. Has anyone experienced the thickened skin? I think that worries me more then anything. I just hope it's not all related. The anemia with this.

Ok do not laugh..., I DID make a fur lined 'Jock strap' for my old gelding years ago. He (unwisely) got into a fight with a stallion and ended up with a really huge penile Hematoma, I mean the size of a football . The vet said that along with the meds it it was imperative to keep it supported to prevent further damage, due to the weight of the swelling, and also keep it moist (baby butt ointment worked well) ,
I took two new fleece type western cinches and strapped them together to make really wide one. Then with a bit if strapping it was like a bucking strap you would see on the rodeo horses, just wider, and he had his fuzzy warm support.:D
. I lined the "jock strap" with baby diapers to be able to catch some of the urine and debris and changed the diapers several times a day. The penis finally went back in but it took a week or more.

Cut hole out of end of sock. If you get one the right size, with plenty of elastic, it might stay on.

You might check with an orthopaedic suppy store to see if they have an elastic stocking that is small enough to do the trick.
