[edit]

It is that time of year when the Intercontinental Sport Horse Auction is happening in Wellington 2/14/10 at Nona Garson’s facility. We go every year and buy 3-4. I have had my ear to the ground and hear they are bringing in some very talented youngsters from Canada and overseas and will have some ponies this year too. I also understand they are focusing on some with dressage talent to bring in the dressage crowd. Of course the hunters and jumpers will be in full force. We usually go between February 1-10, 2010 to try the horses before the auction when you can have some one on one time with the animals and get to know their personalities. I don’t think many people know you can go early and try them. (Maybe I am giving away our secret!).

I know we are looking forward to buying some this year and just wondering if any of the COTH clan are coming down or will be there to attend. If so, I want to try and get some COTH groups together.

What are the price ranges at the auction? Or is it all over the board? Sounds interesting. Do they ever put the sales horses online, or do you just have to go there to look?

They go as low as $6,500 and as high as six figures.....the catalog is usually posted on their site "Intercontinental Sport Horse Auction" by January 15 or so

i'll be attending just to check out what they have available. I love going every year! Its such a great experience :) The one year i was sooo annoyed though... there was what seemed like a battle over this one gelding... the girl who wanted it kept yelling at her parents "please daddy! COME ON! Please I want it!"... well surprise surprise... she got herself a new horse! lol $75k I believe! lol

I will be there with hubby. Coming to look at the youngsters. Also planning a trip to Ontario two weeks earlier for the same purpose. You never know what you might find! HOPEFULLY it will be warmer there than Canada, ;)

We have three tables set thus far of COTH folks...yeah

I talked to Nona the other day and was very impressed that she actually goes to see each and every horse 2-3 times over the last month before even accepting them in the auction and then they get vetted and if they don't pass reasonable muster for their intended purpose they don't get accepted. The vetting is very detailed. This means that these horses have been properly scrutinized both physically and skillfully. She said that the vettings are available onsite before the auction for people to meet the vet and discuss the findings before bidding.

She said there has been such a response and that she is very proud of those that have been selected. She has even had to turn away some.

I know I am excited to see the catalog get put up soon.

Is it mostly made horses or will there be some baby greens too?

Nona always seems to have a great selection of horses. Darren Chiacchia is in the 2nd year of his sport horse auction, I believe it is going on next weekend. A friend of a friend picked up a really nice youngster from his sale last year. Anyone plan on attending or attended last year? I am closer to Ocala than Wellington.

Can someone tell me what the minimum age is for a horse to be entered? I would like to enter some of our young horses in future years. I've looked all over the site and couldn't fine anything stating the minimum age, but the youngest seem to be 4 years old and all started under saddle.

TIA

I have a random question. How many people are looking to purchase one of these horses without riding them? or even seeing them in person? I'm only asking to find out more about these type of auctions.

We go try them and check the vet reports before making any decisions

[edit] I wonder if they will post what the bidding closed at after the auction? Curious.

Hi folks ~

We've removed/edited a bunch of posts to comply with the forums' no-advertising policy. It's A-OK to discuss the auction, how it runs, and the type of horses available in a general sense, but as we don't allow discussion/promotion of specific horses for sale on the site (regardless of whether or not someone is affiliated with them), we have to restrict the those types of posts.

Thanks!

Why is this overlooked in the SHB forum? The exact same type/form of promotion exists over there with stallion owners...

Moderator 1 - I was surprised because the auction was hotly advertised in the Chronicle of the Horse and I understand they paid alot of money over the last few months advertising all over the Chronicle Magazine and online.

Sorry folks, my assistance was requested for a couple purchases and I couldn't keep up with the other horses going through. Buyer purchased. #10, Fifth Avenue, a lovely horse who all the auction folk raved after sale was complete. Princess was way cuter in person, though I missed her sale price.
