View Full Version : 2010 not starting out so good. RIP Waarom. update post #77

I am posting here rather than the horse care forums as this is the forum I most frequently visit.
Please jingle away for my daughter's 6 year old show mare. She had slightly coliced Wed evening but was dehydrated so since it was the holiday weekend and we have to go to a show, my vet and I thought it would be good to take her to the UF vet center yesterday for monitoring and rehydration. I left her there thinking it was a simple colic case to be resolved easy.
I got a call from the vet at 5:30AM this morning and she is now taken a turn for the worse. Not sure what is really going on and I was very "foggy" when awoken by the phone call so I am not sure I grasped what is going on. I don't really want to post more details as I am not sure I would post them correctly.
Anyways, please jingle for her she is a super special mare. I know that the COTH jingles help :)

I had thought I was just taking my mare to U of F vet clinic with a simple colic for fluids and rehydration since we are busy at a show this weekend and I wanted her monitored.
At 5:30AM this morning, the vet called and my mare was presenting with acute blindness and in a manic state (she is normally extremely laid back). They weren't quite sure what was going on. She is upto date on all vaccinations, aggressively wormed and in excellent condition.
At about 10:30AM the vet called back and her vision was coming and going in one eye but the other was still blind. She was continuing in a manic condition (basically circling the stall without cease).
They are diagnosing her with an extremely rare condition which is (I believe) called "GI induced hyperammonemia" (spelling ?) Basically (the way I understand it) the food in her stomach did not move, fermented and released ammonia into her blood stream causing liver problems which lead to brain swelling. Treatment is aggressive antibiotic, aggressive fluids and lactulose (and maybe a few other things which I can't completely remember). She was given a 50/50 chance.
Tonight the vet called and she is very cautiously optimistic. Her vision has returned and manic state has almost resolved for now. They will rerun the ammonia levels tomorrow. I am so glad that we took her to U of F because she would not have had any chance if we had not -- this is something that can not be treated at a local vet and if she had been at my farm when she deteriorated I would have never been able to get her in my horse trailer.
She is passing manure and has been passing manure with the oil that was given by my vet so looks like no obstructions and no surgery at this point.
So please continue to jingle for her. I know they are working :) This is a link to her page on my website if you would like to see who you are jingling for: http://www.seafiresporthorses.com/waarom.html
I will update again tomorrow evening. Thank you everyone.

Is this something that is likely to give her problems later, or is it just a one-time thing caused by the colic?

I'm so sorry for the loss of your mare.
It is amazing the things these animals can throw at you.
When you feel able could you tell us some more? Did she have an impaction which caused the food to stay in her stomach? Is the brain aneurysm somehow related?
God, sometimes horses are scary - they are so freaking fragile and unpredictable.

A necropsy was done today and U of F will send me/my vet the written report when completed. I don't think that anyone understands the primary cause of all of this. She was perfectly normal at feeding time that evening, ate well, kicked at her stall door (she always did this) asking for her hay. About 45 minutes after her meal she was just NQR. My vet lives behind me and was at my place within about 30 minutes of her "colic like symptoms" and she was tubed and oiled immediately. I don't think she ever had a true impaction just decreased GI motility. Surgery was never an option offered to me and if it had been it would have been immediately done if her life could have been saved.
The one blessing that I do have with her is she does have a filly which I still own. I bred her (as a 3 year old) before I imported her from Holland. I have a beautiful 2 year old filly by "Olympic" Concorde out of her. Her filly is identical to her and when they were next to each other you would mistake which was which. So she (the filly) came off "the market" this morning and will replace her mother for my daughter to show in the future.
When I found out more information from the necropsy I will post about this again.
I just want to thank everyone so much for the support and well wishes -- I really never realized how supportive these threads are until you are on the other side.:)
