View Full Version : How tall are you and your horse?

Dec. 31, 2009, 09:51 PM
In the hunter ring, it's always good for horse and rider to 'fit'. So how tall are you, and how tall is/are your horse(s) ? Pictures of you standing by your horse and/or riding are a bonus :-)

Dec. 31, 2009, 09:57 PM
I'm 5'9" and I have 3 horses - 16.1h, 16.3h, and 18h. The 16.1h guy is new, so no photos yet...but here's the other 2...

Horse #2 OTTB 16.1 Hunter

Horse #1 OTTB 17.1h Hunters & Jumpers

I felt tiny on the 17.1 horse, but feel like I fit the 16.1 horses pretty well.

ETA: I recently sold my 12h pony

Dec. 31, 2009, 10:01 PM
I am 5'4" my horse is 16.2 but super narrow. I can ride large ponies and basically any size horse. I ride a 15.3 horse for a friend and people say we are the perfect fit.
sorry no picturess

Dec. 31, 2009, 10:07 PM
I'm 5' 5" on a 15.3+ horse, and it feels just right.

Dec. 31, 2009, 10:16 PM
I'm barely 5 ft tall. Here are some pics of me.

Bay horse is a 15.3 appendix gelding
Chesnut is 15.3 3/4 hanoverian - she looks/rides much bigger as you can see in the photo!

It's funny how differently I fit on them because of their body shapes.

I'm lucky because I can ride everything from small ponies on up. But I start to feel ineffective on anything much bigger than the mare. My leg isn't long enough! :)

Dec. 31, 2009, 10:17 PM
6' and my horse is 16.2 and a bit. TB so long and lanky--I think small for me, my trainer says not too bad. This isn't the best photo (greenbean moment, please excuse us!) but it's the best I could find. ETA he's gained about 100 lbs. in muscle and fat since this picture was taken. He fills up my leg much more now, or at least he feels like he does.

We have a new schoolie who's a 17.1 dutch warmblood and I feel just about right on him. I got the most "you look really good on him" compliments on a 17.3 huge boned Irish cross I used to ride--I also just meshed with him riding wise.

Dec. 31, 2009, 10:18 PM
I'm 5'6&1/2 (probably closer to 5'7 now...)

He's pretty narrow though! ;)

Dec. 31, 2009, 10:24 PM
I'm 5'10, and all leg. I own a 16h (well we never had him sticked officially b/c I didn't want to find out he was 15.3... haha) and had an 18.2+ (no one could find a stick over 18h and he was well over that...) one this summer.

18.2- http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=2983878&op=1&o=global&view=global&subj=1107720108&id=782166504

16.2 and 16.3. I'm 5'10" but have a 38" inseam so I need a horse with a lot of "side" and bit on the leggy side to look good.

Dec. 31, 2009, 10:28 PM
I'm 5'6'' and have a 16.3 ottb that is built like a tank. I prefer to stay 16h and up.

Dec. 31, 2009, 10:29 PM
I'm 5'6&1/2 (probably closer to 5'7 now...)

He's pretty narrow though! ;)

Neither of your links would open for me because of your privacy settings. *You can right click, hit "view image in a new window" then copy & paste the new URL and everyone can see it.

Heartinrye I couldn't see you're 18.2 picture either

Dec. 31, 2009, 10:30 PM
Well I'm about 5'7"-5'8" and pony is 14.1 7/8. I definitely don't "fit" him, but we make it work.

Me on my pony

I also ride my trainers 17.1 TB/Warmblood cross, who I look much better on i think.

Dec. 31, 2009, 10:35 PM
Bah couldn't load your last link HowDoILook. Silly facebook.

Dec. 31, 2009, 10:44 PM
I am 4'10 1/2" and my horse (QH) is 14.2. Going to get him sticked and hopefully a pony card soon, after he's been trimmed. The one time I tried a stick it was 14.2 1/2". We are both in-betweens. d;

First pic is me standing next to him, second is me riding him, third is me on my fave small pony--just for comparison. (:

Dec. 31, 2009, 10:46 PM
I'm 5'4", my horse is 16.3+ hands. I have a really long leg, so we work. He's actually starting to feel small, lol. Personally I love my size, I look fine on 17 hands (I think), but I'm only 95 lbs and can easily ride a small! I look best on a big bodied 16-16.1.

No saddle, to show my leg length

My ex-horse was 15hands, but really took up leg. Even my 5'11" dad looked good on him
My dad

I also occassionally ride my parents horse. His HUGE whithers make him tall, but he's really smaller then my horse

Dec. 31, 2009, 10:49 PM
I'm 5'5"

horse #1 is 15.3

horse #2 is 17.3

my retired boy is 16.1 and he felt just right! I don't really care about their size more of how they are to ride :)

Dec. 31, 2009, 10:52 PM
i'm 5'9'' almost 5'10'' and i ride a barely 16hh appendix :) thank god he's wide barreled:lol:

Dec. 31, 2009, 11:02 PM
I'm 5'6 but I have really long legs for my body. I ride everything from a 14hh Welsh pony to a 18hh Draft cross! I feel tiny on the Draft but he's the only horse that my legs don't quite reach the bottom of his barrel! Surprisingly, on the ponies, I don't look absolutely ridiculous because I'm not too tall!

Jan. 1, 2010, 12:09 AM
Im 5'7" and my horse is a 17+hand TB who is built more like a WB

Jan. 1, 2010, 12:23 AM
Im 5 '2 and my horse is 15.1hh.

Jan. 1, 2010, 12:35 AM
5'6 1/2 and my boy is 17h, but kind of narrow. My leg comes to his elbow, so we fit well (I have a 32" inseam, so on the long side, but nowhere near the person with a 38" inseam--where the heck do you buy pants??!)

Jan. 1, 2010, 12:41 AM
I'm a hair under 5'8", my mare is 16.3 (pic in my siggy) I actually feel big on her though. She's pretty narrow. My last guy was 16.1 but much broader, I actually felt like we were more proportional to each other.

Jan. 1, 2010, 12:44 AM
I'm 5'7" (I think I may be 5'8", but I'm in denial:lol:) and my horse is a slab sided tb measuring at a whopping 15.3:D. I look a little big on him, but not outrageously. I also ride a very wide barrelled medium pony, and my leg looks the same on her as my on my horse, but my upperbody is way too big for her. Also, I ride a 17 hand warmblood, and I probably fit him the best.

Jan. 1, 2010, 12:53 AM
I'm 5'7, and my horse is 16.2hh or so; I've never sticked him, but that's what his papers say. Seems about right. :)

My last two horses were 15.2hh-ish, here's me on them.

And riding a 14.3/15hh mare:

I have loooong legs and no torso, so I prefer something with a decent amount of barrel - my guy is tall but it's all legs haha! I like how I feel on him though.

Jan. 1, 2010, 02:03 AM
I'm 5'2 and my horse is 17.1 and some change.. I do have longish legs though..
My Daughter is about the same size but like me is all leg.. this is her on him.

Jan. 1, 2010, 03:10 AM
I am 5'4...lol my ottb is 15' 1 but has a barrel of most of the WB's at my barn. He wears a 58" girth. lol My trainer 1st got on him and was like Holy Sh.t I feel like I am riding a 17h , but then I look down and the ground is so close... lol. He is my perfect size with his barrel though. This is him in my profile picture and he is notover weight at all. lol

Jan. 1, 2010, 04:31 AM
5'1", slightly overweight, and I ride a 15 hand fairly lightly built Morgan. I have been told that we are a perfect match, size-wise!

Jan. 1, 2010, 06:49 AM
I'm 5'5" and my horse is 17.1

Jan. 1, 2010, 08:38 AM
I don't do the hunters or equitation (save for IHSA) now, but when I did, I showed a few mounts...

I am 5'1'', just so you know.

One horse I showed - and still show in the jumpers - is 15.3 7/8

Another was around 17 hands. We just did the equitation. I looked very small haha!

Aaaand yet another was 13.1 7/8. Hahaha.

Jan. 1, 2010, 08:49 AM
okay, I am just five feet tall and my horse is 16.3 and big. It is a lot of work for me to keep her together some days! My last horse was 16.2 but built much more like a typical slab sided thoroughbred. thoroughbred so we were a much better match build wise.

Jan. 1, 2010, 09:10 AM
Heartinrye I couldn't see you're 18.2 picture either

Try this one!

Jan. 1, 2010, 10:01 AM
5'0, I ride a 16'2 TB. It felt weird at first, but it's okay. Not the perfect fit, but our personalities click and I don't look like a mouse on him.

Jan. 1, 2010, 10:32 AM
I'm just about 5'5".

I also have a 16.3H OTTB and a 15H ???, but no pix of me on them

Jan. 1, 2010, 10:42 AM
I am 5'10 and my horses are

16 1/2h : http://s12.photobucket.com/albums/a225/Parellihorses/todd/?action=view&current=DSC_1458.jpg

and 16.1h (super fat so she looks bigger...)

Jan. 1, 2010, 11:06 AM
My QH mare is 16H but built more fine boned and leggy...her half brother Terry is also 16H and a tank.

My 2 Percheron mares are both 17.2H each, yes they have been sticked and a joy to ride as well.

Jan. 1, 2010, 11:09 AM
I am way too big for my mare. I bought her as a project so I knew we'd never do well in the hunter ring together.

I'm 5'9" or 5'10" and she's 15.3-16hh and very thin.

Gelding is maybe 16.2hh and wide, we fit fairly well.

Jan. 1, 2010, 11:20 AM
Im 5'9 and my guy is 16.3 ISH. This is his first show ever.

Jan. 1, 2010, 11:34 AM
I am 6'2 and my horse is 16.3. My next horse(one day) will be over 17H. I think I am ok on Chimmy, but pushing it slightly.

Jan. 1, 2010, 11:42 AM
I am 5'5", horse is WB/TB cross 16.3hands.

Jan. 1, 2010, 11:48 AM
I am 5'10" tall and my little twh mare is 14.3 on a good day. I don't have an pics of us, but it works out really well. I have enough leg on her and she can carry me well. We are currently jumping cross rails. I hope to work up to higher jumps as we are both learning. I haven't had one comment about me being too large for her or her being too tiny for me. She has a huge heart and will jump the moon if I ask her.

BTW, we are both learning. I am 36/7. She is 12. Huge learning curve here!

She is fun and balanced with me and I don't feel too top heavy on her.

I just rode an almost 16hh wide barrelled QH mare. She felt too wide. It felt as if my knees were at my ears. I like shorter, narrower horses.

Jan. 1, 2010, 12:41 PM
I'm 5'5" and my horse is 14.3. I sometimes feel a little tall for his short neck, but his QH barrel takes up mu short leg and then some.

I really don't like to ride anything over 15.3 or 15.3-I feel intimidated by the size, even with a quiet horse. I'm more confident on a fruitcake pony than on a quiet 17hh horse.

Jan. 1, 2010, 01:05 PM
I'm 5'11" and have two horses, one 15HH and the other 16.1. Both are very big bodied and take up my leg perfectly.

Jan. 1, 2010, 01:22 PM
I'm 5'4", maybe 5'5" (on a tall day ) my current horse is 16.2

Jan. 1, 2010, 01:46 PM
i'm 5' on a good day :D i just moved off a pony. no pics of new horse yet, because he's coming on trial tomorrow :p

anywho, my pony is 14 h, has decent size barrel

potential horse is around 16-16.1 hh which is normally taller than i'd like, but i realize height isnt quite as important to me in a horse as much as how short of a back and neck they have. you could give me a 15 h horse but if he's got a super long back and neck, sorry charlie. i'm too small for that.

so basically what i look for in horse shopping is a horse that is reasonably tall (i'd prefer to stay under 16.2) and has a short back/neck and narrow-medium barrel :)

Jan. 1, 2010, 02:36 PM
I'll play. My equitation horse was an old fashioned 17.3h Hanoverian and he took me all the way to all the Big Eq finals including the USET at age 14. Did I mention I was only 5'3? Granted, some equitation judges wouldn't take a second look, but most didn't mind the picture as long as everything else was there. He was the best horse of my life!

Yes, I look very silly: http://photos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-sf2p/v257/1/46/1089653816/n1089653816_47966_3893.jpg

Jan. 1, 2010, 02:37 PM
I'm just under 5'10" with a long/thin build. My personal horses that I show are 16.2, 15.3, and 16. I also ride some clients horses that are in the range of 15-18 hands. One in particular is 17 hands and his sides fit me like a dream (he would have been the perfect eq horse for me back in my Jr days). Once in a while I will ride big ponies but generally throw an advanced student on the mediums who is very petite.

I think "average" sized riders generally look good on horses that are in the range of 15.3-16.2.

Jan. 1, 2010, 03:05 PM
I'm 5'7 with short legs, and my horse is a fairly narrow 16.1.

He was being a spazz, but you get a general idea of the size.

I'm 5'5 and these are the ones i have:
16.2 German WB, 13.2 Welsh x POA, 15.2 Thoroughbred,

Jan. 1, 2010, 07:28 PM
I'm 5'7" with disproportionately long legs. My horse (http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/ss65/2tipperary/Tipperary/OfficialcopymomandTips.jpg) Tipperary is a 15.2 1/2 Irish Sport Horse. The 1/2 is very important. ;) My upper body is too tall on him but he takes up my leg just fine, and our body builds suit each other. Here I am standing next to him (http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/ss65/2tipperary/Tipperary/Tipiscute.jpg), and don't worry, he worked all that extra weight off.

Whereas this horse (http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/ss65/2tipperary/Amigo/amigo-pony.jpg), a Thoroughbred is 15.3. I swear it to you, he is 15.3, and while I'm at it, I'm also 140lbs. You can see why a horse's build is more important than his height. ;) Here he is (http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/ss65/2tipperary/Amigo/Canwebecuter.jpg) with his person, my sister, who was also 5'7" at time of photo but is built like a model. She'd started to outgrow him by the time of this photo. (http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/ss65/2tipperary/Amigo/Icanhascookie.jpg) Then we got him to put some weight on and he took up her leg well enough for her to have another year.

Another one, a long-bodied, 16.2 Thoroughbred (http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/ss65/2tipperary/Renaissance/Oxercopy.jpg) (see what I meant when I said I had long legs?)

And a 17.3 Warmblood (http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/ss65/2tipperary/Cyrus2.jpg) while I'm at it. I thought I would look like a peanut.

Jan. 1, 2010, 08:50 PM
I am 5'3 and my current horse is right at 16h, maybe just under.

at this height, however, i have ridden everything from an 18hh jumper to a 12h pony.

3 is the limit
Jan. 1, 2010, 09:28 PM
I'm 5'9" and found that I "fit" my old 17h QH perfectly.

Now I have a 16.2 WB who is really narrow so it is hard for my leg to get around him.

Also have a 16h TB who I thought was a little small when I bought him 2 years ago (at the age of 3). Since then he's gained about 300 pounds and I've lost 30. Now everyone tells us how great we look. Go figure?

Jan. 1, 2010, 10:49 PM
I am 5'7 1/4" (I was just at the doctors a few weeks ago, so I can be very specific haha)

*on my last horse, 15.3ish narrow OTTB Gelding

on my lease from last year..I think he was about 16.1, Appendix Gelding with monster withers. not too wide, not to narrow...I think size wise I fit him very well.

(I obviously HATE bays with stars)

And last but not least, the pony (same one that SarahandSam has a pic of) that I really look the best on... She just takes up my leg very nicely, in fact, I think I look a little small on her...I think I need to find something smaller to ride.

Jan. 1, 2010, 10:55 PM
5/6 1/2 inseam 32. 16.2 OTTB with 52' girth. She could be bigger but she is such a sweet girl. Could cross her with a shire for a bigger one : )

Jan. 1, 2010, 11:28 PM
I am about 5'9 or 5'10 and all leg.

My horse is a 17 hand Percheron/Thoroughbred

yeeeppp, her head is about the size of my torso:rolleyes:

Me on a 14.1 Quarter Horse

Jan. 1, 2010, 11:48 PM
5'6" and my pony is 16.1 :D I actually prefer a horse that takes up my leg a tad more but he's built so that we're a good fit.

Jan. 2, 2010, 12:02 AM
I am 5'8, and my mare is a 16.3 1/4 Dutch Warmblood. She is pretty round, and takes up a lot of my leg. I think I look pretty short when riding her, but no one has ever told me that. :) Just my own thoughts...

Jan. 2, 2010, 12:34 AM
5'3", horse is 16hh, would not want to go much bigger than that.

make x it x so
Jan. 2, 2010, 12:28 PM
Me: 5'0 (Maybe 5'1 on a good day haha I haven't measured my height recently)
Horse: 16.1 ish (haven't really officially measured him) and very slab-sided!

My legs definitely have some room under them on him, but I don't think I look especially tiny up there! If I could get my heels to stay down more consistently, it probably wouldn't be an issue at all!:D

riding (http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=30092484&id=1375350097)

I can't find any of me standing next to him, but let's just say he's significantly taller than I am. Especially because he has high TB withers!

Jan. 2, 2010, 01:32 PM
I'm 5'4" and I ride a 16.3h Dutch WB. I think we fit pretty well :)

Jan. 2, 2010, 11:09 PM
I'm 5'8" ride a 16hh, 16.1hh, 17hh, and I have a 13.3hh pony and I'm schooling a 15.1hh youngster.
The 16hh: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=4651619&l=e4a9cd0b6e&id=649965585

The 13.3hh: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=2277346&l=4be7328a8c&id=649965585

I don't have any of the 15.1h but I look more akward on him than the pony.

Jan. 2, 2010, 11:15 PM
I am 5'11" and not at all thin! Not fat exactly but BIG boned (literally, my bone density is off the charts for women). I have two horses that I consider "mine" even though I own a lot! One is a 17.2 hand appendix QH (yes really!) and one is a 16.3 hand WB cross. Don't have any pics or videos of my on the appendix, but you can see me on the 16.3 hand gelding here:

He is a relatively new horse for me, got him from a student because he was too green for her. Will show him some hunters and some in dressage/CT probably. Hard for me to find a horse that "fits" height isn't really all their is to it!

Jan. 3, 2010, 12:53 AM
I am 5'2" on a tall day. My daughter's horse, Jurassica, is 17.3. My daughter is 5'6". She actually looks good on Jurassica. Me? Well, let's just say that I could sell tickets when I ride her. Everyone comes up to the ring to see the flea on the dinosaur.

Jan. 3, 2010, 09:43 AM
I'm 5'7" and my horse is about 16/1hh Holsteiner

And my OTTB that I just sold was about 15.3hh

I also ride tons of ponies for my trainer, probably around 13.2-14 hhhttp://photos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs023.snc3/11033_188768167765_595222765_2885743_7016078_n.jpg

sorry for the tons of photos, I luff my little ponehs

Jan. 3, 2010, 11:38 AM
I am 6'0" with long legs.

My old TB was 16.1 and very narrow. I looked pretty silly on him.

My current horse is a 17.1 draft cross. We make each other look normal sized :)

But we're both huge ;)

I am 5'4" on a tall day... my horse is 17.1. I sure don't look small on him, though.

I just skimmed the other posts so maybe someone has already pointed out that fit has to do with more than just the horse's height. In fact, IME it is often more about how much the horse's barrel takes up the rider's leg - a smaller rider can look lovely on a tall, slab sided horse, for example.

6'2" with a 36" inseam, my horse is 16.3hh and of "medium" build ...

Funny enough, the older I get, the shorter my horses get! I used to love the 16-16.2 hand horses when I was a kid! Now, I have a 15 hand and a 15.1 hand horse, and the 15.1 hand horse seems tall! I am 5'7" and have long legs, so a big-bodied horse looks good with me.

im barely 5ft and I ride a 15.1 wide barreled connemara and a 17h oldenburg :)
I look small on both of them lol.

Jan. 3, 2010, 06:08 PM
5'7" and ride a 17.1h wide, long Thoroughbred. I've been known to look really silly on 16h horses that are skinny but fine on 15.2 hand wide ones because I have a pretty long upper body as well as pretty long legs. I also ride occasional large ponies and look ok on them except for my upper body being really too big...

Jan. 3, 2010, 06:10 PM
5'7" and have a 17.1 and a 18 hand Tbs.

Jan. 3, 2010, 07:11 PM

Hahaha.

ohhh yeah! Power to the shorties! lol Im only 5'2" so luckily I can fit almost any size horse or pony (as long as their not too big... lol).

these are two of the more recent photos of me and the love of my life ( ) He's a 15.2 - 15.3(ish? need to have him sticked) QH who has the cutest ears around hahaha

I'm 5'9" and my baby is a TB gelding that is 16 1. He is built like a 17 hand horse on pony legs! LOL! We putz around at 2'9" or so and I think he is fine carrying me around... my leg fits his barrel well but my upper body might be a bit big for him - but since we mostly take lessons and show locally in good weather, I'm not so concerned with the "look". I would hate to think that I'm too big for him so please don't tell me otherwise! Anyway, my ottb and I are happy together so that's all that matters!

Please let me know if you can open this link - it's been an experiment trying to post it!

I'm in between horses right now, but I'm just barely 5'0 and 100lbs, so I look ridiculous on bigger horses. (And done growing...blah...) I love riding ponies, and at 5'0 I look normal on most of them. My last guy I owned was 13.2 on the dot:

And here's a 14.2 POA...
http://photos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs024.snc3/11137_1129165827042_1164090815_30437868_464494_n.j pg

And a 15.2 or 15.3 Thoroughbred...

I'm in the market right now and looking for an athletic sport pony type Welsh or German Riding Pony between 13.2-14.2. I like feeling like my leg is doing something other than tickling their sides!

Jan. 4, 2010, 12:41 AM
My horse is like 16.3 and I'm 5'4ish.

Jan. 4, 2010, 12:59 AM
I am 5'9" and have realllly long legs-no joke 36" inseam. I used to have a 14.2ish QH and I looked really stupid on her (mind you this was 2 summers ago and I was almost 5'8") I could also wrap my legs around her bareback. hehe:

I also had a 17h TB mare that I pretty well-she wore a 58" girth, while my poneh wore a 48", haha.:

Hehe, I've been rereading this thread because I have decided that when I grow up, I want a big pony, as well as a horse-horse :) Why would a 6 foot tall woman want a pony, you ask? Well, my lesson barn had a schooling show this weekend, and I couldn't ride the 16h QH I usually ride (my poor boy is lame! :( ), so my instructor put me on her 14.1h chubby Appy mare....who I ADORED! OMG! There is something so cheerful and happy about that little pony stride! And while I have no pics to prove it, I was told that I actually looked fine on her - which amazed me as my height is ALL leg!

So now I want one of my own, and decided to look at this thread to see if any other Amazons ride large ponies :) And it seems there are a few of you out there, so my hopes are not dashed! One day, I will have a pony to bop around on ;)

Mar. 3, 2010, 12:09 PM
In the hunter ring, it's always good for horse and rider to 'fit'. So how tall are you, and how tall is/are your horse(s) ? Pictures of you standing by your horse and/or riding are a bonus :-)

I am 5'2" on a good day . My main man is 17.2 hh. We also have a medium pony, now retired, a large pony, also retired, and a 16.2 hh WB gelding who's rehabbing. I ride/have ridden all of them.
He looks pretty bad in the pictures, it was right after we got him, he was underweight, out of shape, and with a really poor quality coat and we were in the middle of adjusting his diet for his EPSM. Excuse the dressage tack  it was all I had atm

I'm 5'6 and shrinking and my mare is 15.2hh on a good day although I haven't sticked her in a while. Fortunately she has a pretty decent heart girth that takes up my leg (which belongs on someone more like 5'1). I'd like my next horse to be in the 16hh range but definitely not with a huge barrel.

Mar. 3, 2010, 01:48 PM
My daughter is 13 and about 5'3. I am 5'4. Her horse is just under 18hh.

In this first pic my daughter is in the red jacket standing and I am on him:

This is her hacking him in the snow this past weekend. Her friend on the black horse is just over 5' and the horse is around 16.1:

I'm around 5'10, my big guy is about 17.2hh. I *think* he's done growing now so I should measure him to find out exactly... we couldn't fit eachother better. I wish I had a picture to post though...

Mar. 3, 2010, 03:06 PM
I am 5'7" and my main ride right now is 15.1 but big bodied. Not the perfect fit, but we win consistently (we event and do Dressage) so I can't complain one bit!

I also have a 15.3 hander (also a very large bodied Dutch Warmblood) and a 16.1 hander Hanoverian...which I would say for me is the perfect size. :)

pics of mine can be found at www.aretefarm.com

Mar. 3, 2010, 09:46 PM
I'm 5'2" and my mare is 15.2hh. We seem to fit each other pretty well.

The only picture I have standing next to her is from back when she was a newly turned three year old.

Almost three years later, I haven't changed size, but she has grown and filled out quite nicely (at least in my eyes she has ;)).

Mar. 3, 2010, 09:58 PM
I'm 5' on a good day and my horse of a lifetime is probably over 17 hands -- have never put a stick on him because I don't want to know! My other guy is probably 16.1 or 2. When I started to shop for the first one, I expected to buy something under 16 hands, but saw the big guy and was totally smitten from the first minute and now we are still together almost 11 years later, although he is semi-retired.

Sorry, I don't know how to post pictures, but there are some on my website. OP -- pm me if you want the name of the website.

i'm 5'.. almost 5'1''

my horse is a TB and he's 16 maybe 16.1 hh. he's kind of big bodied but sort of narrow in the barrel , and i have long legs.

then my pony is 14.1 and he's got a big fat barrel, though i just recently moved up from him (to the horse above) i still ride him sometimes

i'm 5'9 and up on my 16.1 it all feels about right :)

Mar. 4, 2010, 08:46 AM
I'm 5'9 and on my guy, who is 16.3, I look a little small on him. He takes up all 35 inches of my leg :D

My mare is 16.0 and I fit her perfectly.

Mar. 4, 2010, 09:58 AM
Cool pictures everyone - good to see some smaller horses that people fit well. Loved the paint pony! Could not see a lot of the Facebook links.

Here I am on my 17h+ (have not sticked him) Irish Draught. I am 5'8" (was 5'9" but am shrinking lol). Not a great pic of him - his neck is not that short "in real life".

I am 5'5"ish. My horses are 14.1hh and 16hh. I am vastly more comfortable on the taller one as I have fairly long legs for my height and the pony just does not take up my leg well. The pony is currently being ridden by a friend that is 5'3"ish and she looks much better on him.

I'm 5'8" and ALL leg. My current mount is about 15.2 but I would never go out and BUY a horse that small. I just ride him for his owner. I fit him alright but we won't be going out and winning any classes based on suitability any time soon. Unfortunately no pictures of him and I yet...too cold to ride outside and cameras don't work well indoors!

My last horse (I owned this one) was 16.3, I fit him alright enough...he was very refined though, there were times when I felt too big.
16.3 (http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-sf2p/v160/231/88/1487760023/n1487760023_30076197_1973.jpg)

I'm a little over 5'7" with long legs.
Horse #1 is almost 15.3 with a wide barrel:

Horse #2 is 16.1 and not quite as wide:

I personally love a 15.3 hand wide body. I used to think I needed them to be 16.2 or bigger to fit me well. Turns out that's not really the truth. So many people I meet or have met doing resales have thought they couldn't possibly buy a horse under 16.3. I think it's non sense! lol
Although I admit the horse I want to keep when he retires from racing is 16.3+ at 4 years old....but he's very uphill and a lovely ride. It's not really the height I love about him as much as how he rides.

Mar. 4, 2010, 04:42 PM
Horse in profile pic was 17H, I am just under 5'4".

Current horse is 16H and we fit each other just fine, though I'd prefer a shorter model with a wider barrel.
That's way more comfortable to me!

Mar. 4, 2010, 04:43 PM
I'm 5'3 and my horse is 17.3hh.

Mar. 4, 2010, 04:48 PM

I ride 15.3, 16.1, and 17.2ish.

I have to shorten my stirrups a hole for the 15.3, but she has a HUGE jump and a big heart so I don't feel weird on her.

16.1 is the first horse I've owned and we fit quite well, and he's kinda narrow.

17.2 is really narrow and slab-sided, and I fit him really nicely. If he was wide he'd probably ride like a tank, but he's a nice eq mount.

Mar. 4, 2010, 04:55 PM
I'm 5'3 and my horse is 17.3hh.

Good LORD! That just sounds like too much work.

I'm 5'3" and my horse is 16hh. And he makes it down the lines. ;)

Mar. 4, 2010, 04:56 PM
I'm 5'9 my mare is 16.1. I can ride smaller horses & not look too freaky, because of my short upper body. Thank God I have long legs, because if I didn't, I would probably be around 5'1.

Mar. 4, 2010, 04:57 PM
I am 5' 3" and my pony is 14.2.

Mar. 4, 2010, 05:45 PM
I am about 5'5" and my mare is 17.1+ and my gelding is 16.1 with a big barrel. At first I felt kind of small on my mare but now she feels right and when I get on my gelding he seems small.

this is her first time cantering

Friend at 5'3 barrel racing her hunter thats 15.2

I think it all depends on how round the horse is lol ; )

I'll play... I'm 5'2 (built like a twig) My first horse is a 15.3 Thoroughbred mare... I don't have any pics of me on her... I don't get along with her very well... red headed mare... nuff said? (she's got the white eye too!!)

My second Horse/pony is 15 hands... He's draft Haffie X

Then I had a 16.1 TB who sadly passed away 2 years ago

Then I have a still growing Paintxtb who's right now, stands 16hands of not 16.1 He has yet to fill out...
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c293/rebelpaintrider/Peterbilt/DSC_0324.jpg (I promise I'm not pulling on his mouth! I was in the middle of a pull and release!!)

But I do ride pretty much anything... Here's a 18h TBxShire
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c293/rebelpaintrider/The%20Horses/Sleepless2.jpg (Pardon the eq)

Here's Piglet... He's uhhh..... 9-10 hands??

and my boys for a height comparision between 15 hands an 16-16.1

Mar. 5, 2010, 11:02 PM
Well, it matters so much in regards to how both you AND the horse are actually built.

Example.. I'm about 5'5", 5"6 and mostly torso. So, I have shorter legs and can ride a shorter horse without looking silly. Also, my 15.3+ horse is VERY thick and broad.. she actually takes up my leg better than my Appendix that is more slabsided, but 16.3h. And I have a VERY quarterhorsey built 15.2h OTTB mare that I dont look silly on at all. My legs dont even come past her barrel.

So, to be honest, I think it depends more on how a horse is built than anything. A big, thick horse can be 15.2-15.3h and fit the same rider that fits a skinny 17h OTTB.

I'd rather see a rider that looks a little big for a horse, than a rider that looks TINY on a horse. Unless you're talking 5'9" on a Medium pony, haha! But I think 5ft on a 17h horse looks kind of ridiculous. Plus, its *usually* hard for that size rider to be effective.

I prefer a broad, big boned 16h-16.2h horse for almost any rider. Theyre compact enough to do jumpers, and often have enough step to make the hunter strides. Plus, they actually have to start jumping over 2'6", so they tend to have really pretty form even over smaller fences.

Mar. 5, 2010, 11:15 PM
What do you think?
I am short. (4'11-5'0 on a good day). I am pretty much done growing. My immediate family is 5'7 and 5'3. I am thinking about buying a pony that I would *hope* to able to keep forever.
She is 13'2 and super stocky. What do you think? Is that foolish? :|

Mar. 6, 2010, 06:36 AM
im at a short 5ft tall. and doran is currently 15h and a bit.but i have ridden as big as 17.2,that was just ackward and ppl looked at me oddly, but that was like 12 yrs ago in 4h. anything over 16.1 is getting to be too much height for me in terms of horse height to rider size

Fancy That
Mar. 6, 2010, 01:38 PM
I think it all depends on how round the horse is lol ; )

Agree 100%. It all depends on how wide/round the horse is across the back and through the ribs!

There are 15 hand horses that take up a riders' leg and wear a bigger girth than 16 hands horses.

My Morgan is 15.2, wears a 54" girth, and my legs don't really wrap around her at all! She is a TANK.

I'm 5'4". See? Lot's of 'body' under my stirrup :)

Mar. 6, 2010, 04:17 PM
I'm barely 5'5", but I have longish thighs, so I think I don't look too short on my boy, who is just about 16.3. He's super-leggy, but also narrow. I am little enough to ride ponies and not look too freaky as long as they're built big enough around the barrel.

Here we are a couple of years ago- he's bulked up quite a bit since then.

Mar. 6, 2010, 10:52 PM

Probably not, it depends on how pony is built and how your buile. I have this super stocky pony that above with daughter riding, but here I am at 5'7 on him and a friend thats 5'3 on him and he is 13.2. I'm long and to dang skinny and she is shorter and is thicker ;) in a good way

16.2 (for now), 16.3 and 16.3.

I'm 5'10" with a 38" inseam. I need a horse with a lot of side and a little longer leg to look really good up there. My gelding's a little narrower so I jack my stirrups up a bit.

I'm 5'5" & my horse is a broad, bigger boned 16 hands.

I'm 5'7'' with longggg legs

The OTTB I've ridden on and off for several years can be called 16 hands on a tall day. She's fairly big-boned, though I still felt a bit tall on her
not the best picture, but it's the only one that really shows my leg

Another OTTB I showed for about a year and a half was also right around 16 hands, but he was built more like a QH- he had a huge barrel.

Here's a pony I school for my trainer

This guy is right around 15 hands 15'1, but I make him look a lot smaller

This guy was 16'2- I only showed him once or twice before he had a suspensory injury- he's living the high life as a lesson horse now

My current horse is 16'1 and he's a chunker- I don't have any pictures on him, but here's one of him with my saddle on him for reference- you can imagine how he takes up my leg
