Ok, it came in an orange/tan can

The soap was solid and kind of an orange color

I think there was an old-fashioned carriage or jumping horse picture on the front.

I can't remember what it was called, and does it still exist?

are you thinking of Kao-cho-line? It has a four in hand in a tin, but it's almost raspberry colored. It's about 3" tall by 2" diameter. It's for softening leather, harness etc. I use it on things I not only need to soften, but on things I'm storing for a period of time I'm not using.

The only other one that comes in a tin that I can remember is Feiblings. It's a tin about 1" tall by about 5" across. It's brown on the bottom and yellow on top, and the paste is kind of golden yellow. That's great also for cleaning, but doesn't soften as well as the Kao-Cho-Line.

That's all I can think of off the top of the old bean.

I have several vintage/antique saddle soap tins....I would guess you are remembering Propert's...

Propert's had a yellow-tan can, old fashioned huntsman jumping on it (70's...). The current types/formulations I've seen are leather and boot creams in a small glass jar-could even be in plastic now. I've had that boot cream for about 7 years:) A little goes a long way, and I only use it on my show boots.

Viscol, tan can, with old fashioned horse head on it, in old hunter type bridle. Soap was yellowish. That can is probably from the 50's.

Palmgrens Sadeltval, that tin is from the 60's...Made in Sweden. Got this empty one at a yard sale, so no idea what color the soap was...

Anything jog your memory?

Oh, you are a genius, and how fun that you collect vintage saddle soap tins.

I was thinking of Properts... I don't suppose you know if Properts was made in the 1950s. Perhaps Viscol would be even better.... (writing a book, takes place in the 50s)

Propert's was around in the 1800's. Google's your friend!

Elizabeth, Have no idea when these products first came out, just that I have some vintage tins found here and there...Was seeing if any of those jogged your memory. Glad I could help!!

Good luck with your book, keep us informed when it comes out if it's horse related!!

In reading the OP's post, out of nowhere, a word I hadn't thought of in 40 years came up - Properts. Wow. That really, really takes me back to being a teenager.

Now, if I could just remember where i left my car keys a couple of hours ago ...
