View Full Version : Stallion Suggestions (Maybe Partnership?) for an International Showjumping Mare

I have recently purchased a new broodmare prospect and I am trying to decide my plans for the upcoming breeding season. She represented Canada numerous times including a team silver at the 2007 Pan Am games and many placings at 1.60m at CSI competitions. Injury forced her retirement from competition and she will be 16 this year. She is 16.2 h and is a solid built mare with good overall conformation. She is a KWPN mare and her sire is Elmero B (G.Ramiro Z x Alme) and out of a mare named Gwenda (Ulft x Transvaal). I have to go through the process but she will have her Sport predicate and her Crown predicate as she was ranked in the top 400 on several occasions (as high as 212) by the WBFSH jumper rankings.

I have started to investigate stallion possibilities. I would be interested to hear any suggestions. Are there any international callibre stallions (competitors or producers) that offer special consideration for a premium show mare.

Also, because the mare is older, I have started to investigate the costs associated with embryo transfer to see if I could maximize the mare’s production. Do you have any suggestions of people in Quebec/Ontario/Northern US that offer this service?

Anybody have any interest in a partnership (embryo sharing/foal sharing/other)?

In the province of Quebec, Trans-Bio is offering ET. Friends of mine have used their services and were satisfied.

Here is the link to their website: http://www.transbio.com/

Good luck on your surch. Your mare looks amazing !

Isn't that the vet that is involved in the big embryo/foal mixup thread?

Nice mare!

So this would be Melinda? It always lists her sire as Ulft.
Is this also the mare that was donated to Equine Canada?
Interesting history on this horse. http://www.htnb.org/news/ceo_jun09.pdf

This is a very fortunate find for you! I would imagine that the foals will be very marketable out of a mare with those credentials.
She is very impressive  Congrats!

Daniel Jou, of Equine Embryos, is great with ET. www.equineembryos.com
He is near Guelph.
The Jou brothers were cutting edge in this field, and Daniel is really one of the best.
Good luck. Ingrid

Thanks for the suggestions. I guess I have some calls to make on Monday!

Yes this is Melinda. Her pedigree was listed incorrectly and Ulft is actually her dam's sire.

I'm pretty excited to have her and can't wait to breed her!

Fabulous mare!!!! Wish she was mine!!!!

My suggestions: (without having seen her conformation or knowing her temperament)

1. Sandro Boy (expensive - but proven jumper)
2. Lap Top (proven producer of jumpers and has great gaits - semen relatively inexpensive - could be a dressage horse if can't jump)
3. Coconut Grove
4. Pablo (could get a dressage horse if can't jump)
5. Quidam de Revel (SF)
6. Indoctro
7. Irco Marco
8. Robin Z
9. Cardento
10. Corlando (ex Corland)

All of these horses are proven jumper sires of international horses. See the SWB BLUP index for jumpers at http://www.asvh.se/document/blup_hopp0.htm
for the rankings of many jumper sires used in European breeding.

I personally have some Lap Top in my tank for use on a mare (by my stallion) that jumps 5' (Diploma) and was Class 1 in dressage. I figure it is the best of all worlds - a tall leggy bay (my favorite color other than black) with awesome gaits who also is a proven producer of world class jumpers.

I already have a Sandro Hit filly (Sandro Boy is the 1/2 brother to Sandro Hit and won the 2007 World Cup) so I know that Sandro Boy would be awesome too - just at $2,900/dose - PRICEY!!!!

I would love to breed to Coconut Grove too, although he might be too light for Melinda. Of course, if you breed to any of the Capitol line, you're going to get a homozygous grey but it will be able to jump but could be hot!

Have fun shopping!

Dr. Raggio at the Hopital vétérinaire of St-Hyacinthe is the best. He goes back every winter in his country in South America where he does thousand of breeding (yes, I know it sound incredible) and come back in April at St-Hy. He does my AI but this year I plan to do embryo transfer with him.

As for Trans-Bio, they were involved in a controversial ET last year. There is a topic on this thread...

Congratulations for your mare! This is a great buy. Do you have the name of her grand dam (dam side) ?

ARKO III copeted himself with Nick Skelton (?) at the olympics.
Eurocommerce Berlin (saw a super stallion by him at his stallion test)
Landkönig (Father of Lantinus under Dennis Lynch)

Very nice. Indoctro is very proven with the Ramiro lines. It would be good to see some conformation pictures and any details on anything on her character or anything else that might need tweeking.

Ooo-la-la!!! Lucky you!!! Congrats!

I would also be very tempted to use Indoctro on this mare...you cannot beat the sheer numbers of int'l jumpers from him, and the quality he seems to produce.

I really like the stallions at Beaulieu Farms as well, and that would be a local option if frozen is not going to work for her. Also local is Bratt Z (Baloubet du Rouet/Capitol/Laurin/Sacremento Song xx)

I'm trying to find her entire pedigree, but it seems for the places I have searched the dam's pedigree is incomplete making it difficult to say who exactly to recommend...I would LOVE to know more about her motherline, and it sure would tell you more about what might be a successful cross. I'll check around a little more and see what I can find. Oh how exciting for you!!! i'm going to live for a moment vicariously through your experience ;0)

Another wonderful imported stallion with great bloodlines and a super jump is Cotopaxi. He's currently standing at my friend's farm just outside Ottawa, so close to home for you as well.

(This is his owner's BC-based farm. I don't know if my friend/Coto's new rider has a website up yet with Cotopaxi's latest news, pics etc)
