View Full Version : How many of you paste worm via meals?

 I have purchased my very first ever Powerpac and I was wondering how many of you just squirt it into your horse's feed?

My guy will eat anything as long as its mixed in his beet pulp, but I have never ventured to add the paste wormer. Any thoughts? Success? He never turns down feed....

My new pony has a big issue with getting things dosed orally.

I squirted his Equimax right into his grain. He ate it right up. :) Of course, he came from a farm that let him get way too thin, and he was willing to eat anything at this point he was so hungry....lol.

My TB, however, would never let me do this, lol.

One of my girls is difficult to paste worm or bute, etc. I didn't put it in her grain (since she eats grain very slowly), but put it on an apple which she'd happily gobble right up. Easy, peasy. :)

I've done the apple thing for some other difficult horses to deworm and for some it works, others will spit out the particles. I've also tried putting it in grain, but some horses are immensely talented and will eat every speck around the dewormer.

One particularly difficult gelding, I realized that he was decent to bridle and if his bridle was on with the bit in his mouth, he could be dewormed. Not an ideal situation, but it worked.

I do it allll the time. Both of mine will eat anything that doesn't eat them first.

Granted, I can orally dose the Clyde-X no problem. But the 17.3 Percheron?! No way jose'...and when 17.3 doesn't want something, she turns into 20 hands and there's no way 5' 6" me is gonna get-r-done. Sooo into the beet pulp it goes.

If it's Quest or QuestPlus (particularly icky to them), I'll mix it with some apple sauce, cinnamon and then the beet pulp.

17.3 must be a blast! Makes 16 hands seem easy!!!!

Actually my guy does paste worm fine, but I figured by day 3 he will HATE me!!!!!!!! Hence, the food theory! Adding something tasty to the beet mash should be easy....

Well, maybe I will just tube at first and see how it goes. Oh it's going to be FUN!

I do it that way frequently. I just make sure that it is mixed in really well so that the horses can't separate it out. For those who don't get as much feed (so that mixing it in is more difficult), I will sometimes put some molasses on top.

We have a horse here that is more or less impossible to worm the standard way (we found this out the hard way when we decided he needed a Powerpac when he first arrived). It takes two of us to even attempt to worm him, and usually we end up with more wormer on us (on him, up in the rafters, all over the walls) than actually IN him. So, I either get the stuff that comes in pellets for him (I don't understand why every type of wormer doesn't come in that form), I stick it in his food...he'll eat it just fine that way.

My mom takes care of my older horse and his geriatric companion. Neither are that bad about being wormed (my guy has a game, but since I know how to win the game, it is very easy for me to worm him), but my mom isn't terribly comfortable with wrestling with them, so she just sticks it in their feed, which they eat just fine.

l do it all the time too. Not because my horses don't paste (they do). It's just easier for me and I'm sure they lick up every morsel. The only ones I paste are those that are known grain dribblers/spillers.

I also just put it in their feed. My two aren't hard but the foster is, which is when I discoved, probably on here, that you can just put it in their feed. They all eat it just fine that way.

Mine won't touch the paste in his food. No way, no how. He is touchy about bute in his food too.

But he will happily gobble up the liquid (including the liquid fen for a PowerPac dose), and I assume he would eat the pellets but I've never tried those.

I do this sometimes for really hard to worm horses, but does anyone know if it is still as effective as putting it straight into their mouths? Assuming they eat all of it.

I do it with about half of my horses. I figure it gets mixed in their stomach anyway.

I can't imagine why not. It's all going the same place, after all. I know I almost always worm them as they are coming in for their evening meals...the walk from the pasture to their stalls lets them finish chewing whatever was left in their mouth, and their in hand and ready to go. Worm them, put them away and give them their dinner. I don't see how that would be any different from just sticking it right in their food, and since some manufacturers are making it in pellet form and other types of top dressing, I'm assuming as long as it gets in them, it works.
