If my morgan can't be well behaved, he might as well look stunning whilst being bad

He has the potential for a world class main & tail (he's got thick wavy locks) but its extremely fragile, breaks so easily, and grows so slowly. I basically just leave it alone, fearing to brush it out most of the time. From wearing a good fitting turnout sheet only a few times, he lost about 10" of mane, not rubbed out, but broken and ragged. :( And his occasional tail rubbing results in a nearly bald dock within just a day or two.

he has a wonderful coat otherwise, strongly dappled even through his winter woolies, fine and silky, and strong feet... so could his fragile mane and tail be dietary?

oddly too, along with the unusual fragility, his mane and tail hairs are always 'grimy' feeling, though I don't use products on him usually. Its not dirty, but grimy. All the time too, even if he's freshly bathed his mane and tail will be grimy feeling the next day. Its almost like a body oil issue, but mane and tail only. His bodycoat is lovely and clean year round, no matter how much mud he rolls in, and he always smells fresh too (everyone comments on how good he smells). But his mane and tail are gross. He has a perpetually dirty sheath too :(

Oh, and I rough board and its winter here, so no bathing of any kind till spring.

Thank you!!!!
