My coming two year old will be two in April. He is 16HH. I was wondering how tall everyone elses "yearlings" are!

Not very ;) I'd say one is 15h and the other 15.1 - just eyeballing them, that is. My 2009 is almost the same height already.

I just can't believe how tall he is. He has been about 16HH for a couple months now. I hope he is slowing down.:-)

My June '08 model is over 16 hands at the withers and 16.2.&1/2 at his rump. Just measured him yesterday. He's grown a lot in the last 3 months. Very butt high at the moment, but cute as a button!!!!

My April 2008 Westporte gelding is already 16.1 and all legs - he wears a 78 blanket. I am afraid we are looking at over 17 hands when he is done - whew!

Qredit was last measured at 16.0 1/4 in Oct...and he was going through a growth spurt, so I'm pretty sure he's bigger now:yes:. He turns two in the end of Feb.

My filly is 15.3 and is being lightly backed right now. Her Mom is 15.3 and sire is said to be 15.3 as well. I don't know if that means she just arrived at her full grown height quickly or if she will surpass her parents. Her half brother is by a much larger stallion and just hit 15.2 at almost 4 years old.

I'm glad that there are other"giants" out there. My Sinatra Song filly will be 2 in May. Everything looks good, but she has already passed up her mom. Peg

The 2 girls are about 15.2H: 2 days apart in late April. Both are o/o 15.3H TB mares and by 17H Hanno stallion Waldaire. I expect them to mature at 16.2 to 16.3H.

I have not measured my May '08 Freestyle filly in several months but at last measure she was 15.3. She is out with the "big girls" and doesn't look a whole lot smaller! She's wearing a 72" blanket this year (from a 63" last year!).
She was the winner of the Yearlings class at the East Coast GOV Show in Sept (as well as Reserve Young Horse Champion) and they commented on how well developed she is and how she already looks like she could be a 2 y.o...and that was over 3 months ago!
Mom is 16.3 and Freestyle is 17.0+ so she'll be a big girl...

I happened to measure mine tonite. They are both just under 15.2 at the withers and just over 15.3 behind. My gelding is early April and the filly late May. Both parents on my gelding ar 16.2 and both on the filly 15.3. Both are in size 76 blankets.

My Irish Sport Horse filly (May 6 foal date) was a touch over 16 h the last time I measured. I think she will finish 16.3-17 h. Sire 16.3, dam 16h.

My boy will be "2" on March 3rd. and just a few weeks ago I put a stick on him and he is 16.1+ and very butt high.
I am hoping he keeps growing we did the string test and came up with 17.1 hands. Which is Perfect for me.:D

Peg, our Fleur is 15.3 at the withers and higher behind. She is very narrow right now and has that "I've some growing to do look" yikes!

Just eyeballing her, my April 2008 filly is about 15.1 -- but nearly as tall as her April 2007 full brother! Thankfully, he is undergoing a clear growth spurt (very butt high) and she may be slowing down her growing a bit. But she is going to be a tall girl.

Neither mom or dad (Torino) were early maturing, so they both still have plenty of growth yet. When I first bred to Torino he was 6 and a little over 16 hands. He finished at 17.

How do you do the string test?

I am not sure how tall my guy is. He is wearing a 78 blanket right now and last time I measured him he was at least 15.3. He will be 2 Feb. 23rd.

I will have to see if I can find someone to help me measure him.

His mother is 15.3 and the father was 17 hands. I am assuming he will be around 16.2 to 16.3.

He is in a pasture with two 17 hand tanks (that wear size 90 blankets!) so he looks pretty small compared to them.

My 08 baby, Ozzie, is 15.3H at the moment, but butt high. He is an Oswald baby out of a tb mare.

Our Popeye K x TB cross is about 15.2 at the butt now..going through another growing phase! He was his mom's first foal..so I hope he gets the height like his 09 sister is looking like she will have!! She is huge for an 8th month old!

I didn't breed her, but the filly I just got has grown an inch in the past 2 weeks! WTF??? Lol. Its amazing what good nutrition will do! 18 hh, according to the string test. Yikes! Lol. Dad is 17.2, which I'm thinking is more realistic. Either way, she's a big baby!

My June 08 colt, out of a pony mare(12.1) I rescued out of New Holland(unbeknownst to me she was prego) is about 13 hands.
He hangs out with 17.2- 18 hand drafts. I should have named him Napoleon, he will be herd boss someday.

My coming 2 y.o full brother and sister (ET) Hofrat babies are huge...both are 16.3 and butt high, they will not be 2 until March and April, I'm going to need a ladder by the time they are 3:lol:

With my coming 2 yr old. we have a rambo blanket on him and it is a "81" and fits him perfectly .
I the breeder did a string test on him and we are expecting over 17 hands and right now he seems Butt High again.
just now hoping for good joints and no soundness issues. And I have also been told to look out for Spring Time when all the 2 yr olds will make a major change again???
Anyone ever heard of this happening >...

Here are a couple pics of my now two year old. So far she has been a breeze to start. She does circles and figure 8's as well as a few half passes at the walk and trot.

Gotta love those easy ones! I have to admit that I got on my boy yesterday when he was hanging out in pasture standing next to the fence. He could care less. He won't be started or have anything done with him until the end of the year/early next year but he'll be a dream. He lets me lay on him when he naps - just loves the attention.

Technically she is dark bay because she gets a brown muzzle in the winter but for all intents and purposes she is black just like her Mom.

I think my June 08 gelding is about 15hh now at almost 19 months. I measured him at 15 months and he was a little over 14.3hh. I am trying to be good and not measure him again until he's closer to his 2-yr birthday, otherwise I drive myself crazy wanting him to grow.. lol..

Dunno why, though. It's a mystery why we're so conditioned to think a baby "MUST" reach 16h. It's really silly.

I should just be grateful that he's growing slow and steady and still looks drop dead gorgeous at what should be an awkward, growthy stage. :D He looks like a tall, elegant weanling still - so I assume he's got lots and lots of growth left...?!

Here is my 08' guy. He is still around 15.3. Already wheres a 78 blanket!

I probably won't start riding him until April. He has to be able to walk trot canter by the end of August, so we will see how that works. ;)

So what do you think, does he he look like a tb or a wb to you?

So if he is 15.3 now, he might be what, 16.2? I would love for him to stay 16.2.

It just worries me when he isn't even 2 yet and he is already wearing his mothers blanket!

Laurie, your filly is the same color as Ace! Especially in the winter, that light nose comes out! Ace actually has white hairs throughout his body, so in the summer he gets really light.

Well, you all with your "normal" to "large" coming 2 year olds can gloat now. My gorgeous Sempatico homozygous pinto filly sticks a whopping 14 hands at 19 months... not exactly the minimum 15 hands I was hoping for...Maybe I'll need to switch to breeding Spotted Sport Ponies...:)

Seriously, everything's a crap shoot. Over the years I've had 16.1 yearlings that stopped there, geldings that grew slowly but surely to between 16.2 and over 17 hands and took a good 6...years to do it. I've had the babies that are little, tiny at birth and end up 16 hands, and enormous babies that end up just "regular"...

I truly have loved them all. But I do now have to go buy a 16+ ready to start spotted dressage prospect because things just never did work out the way I had hoped. I still blame my bad luck in getting my color breeding just right on ending up with a set of healthy, no problems twins [one tobiano, one overo] back in the days before ultrasound. To top it off, both were presented improperly and my husband, on his one day off, delivered both while the vet was on the way from a distance.

I know that is what scares. Me . this is all a crap shot. and I am hoping mine continues to grow at a good rate to get the height I want.
I know too many breeders that have had the same luck as yourself with them not becoming the horse that they dreamed of.
Best of luck to each of you for your Coming 2 yr olds to become the stars we all dream of .

My 08 filly is now 15.1, she will be 2 April 14th. She just seems to grow evenly daily. I have yet to see her butt high. Her mother (16.2) and aunt,(17.1), uncle (17h) grew the same way. It looks like the 09 filly is going to do the same, slow and steady.
I am happy to read this post as I know I am not alone when I look at the youngsters and wonder " what are you going to be when you grow up?" As well as the daily question of " are you growing, eating, playing, etc properly?"

so thanks for the posts!

My May 08 filly is a hair under 15H. Both parents are Dutch.

I think she'll mature around 16H like her mom.

I bred outside the box for my next Team roping horse. I breed Holsteiners normally but I still miss roping from my old life and thought I'd give it a try with a nice TB I had in our barn. I was hoping for 15.2hh. Well...he is not even 19 mos. old and he is already 15.1. The "little goober" is pictured here this past Sept. He will have to go english because I think he is going to be too big. What do you guys think?

We just sticked our 19 month olds. Both are by Routinier (16.1) and out of mares that are around 16.1. The filly (mine) is 14.2 1/2, and the colt (my sister's) is 15.2. I'm hoping the filly will hit 16 hands at maturity, and my sister is hoping the gelding does NOT hit 17 hands...oh well, we'll adore them any which way they grow up!

well a bit small is normal for twins.
