View Full Version : Shoeing Polo vs. Hunter/Jumper

We've been in polo for most of our horse business. Our farrier is a polo farrier. Problem, we now have a horse that my son is using for hunter/jumper and the vibes I'm getting from my farrier is that he's not sure how to shoe for jumpers. I do know he's never used studded shoes for eventers and doesn't really know how to set them. Also, in conversation, he's not sure what is legal for dressage, but then I'm not a dressage person, so I don't know either.
Can anyone tell me the requirements needed for jumpers vs polo? My current farrier does a wonderful job of keeping shoes on, even with the shoe sucking mud we've had in Maryland this fall/winter.
Don't want to tick off my current farrier, but need to have an adequate shoeing job for the hunter.

I shoe my hunter (I mean hunter as in hunter jumper--not riding with hounds hunter) in an aluminum 2 degree, wide web shoe (his front foot angle needs the help--that's not a "hunter" thing). Nothing particularly special...no studs or anything--compete/train in sand arena. Right now we are taking some time off and he is barefoot behind.
When we get serious about jumping, next shoeing, I will have him use the same shoe with clips.

Truthfully all our horses are shod the same (trim wise)......polo and non polo. A balanced trim is a balanced trim to me. The only difference is the polo ponies have caulked shoes on the hinds during the polo season. Their shoes are pulled for the winter. Jumpers and eventers tend to have removeable/tap in studs so the studs can be changed according to the footing needs. The 2 that I have had jumping though (father a few years back and 4 YO son now) are barefoot. The only thing I have had the young un shod for was fronts for trail riding this fall because of the rocks on the trails at Fair Hill.

His 2 YO brother showed in hand this year. We didn't win the class but the judge did give the colt the "unofficial best looking feet" award......so having TB Feet is not necessarily a curse!!
