View Full Version : Vitamin C in an older horse...how much is enough?

I've noticed a lot of joint supps tout having vitamin C, but the amounts vary widely. My grain has vitamin C--is it necessary to supplement? Any guidelines on how much is enough or too much?

TIA!

Well, I'm not a vet but I believe horses fall into the category of being perfectly able to synthesize their own from glucose (unlike humans). However, vit C is a good antioxidant so it may serve to protect the supplement from oxidation. If it is a solid supplement, however, the protection may be limited...

In general, horses make/get plenty of Vit C on their own.

That said, I did read somewhere that it seemed to be shown that glucosamine (or was it chondroitin sulfate?) worked better when it had C right with it, which is likely why you see it in joint supps.

I do believe there is a problem with supping too much though

Pretty sure excess Vit C is excreted in their urine since they synthesize their own.
