Hi everyone,
Anyone have any input on what to use on outdoor rings in the winter to keep them from freezing? I have heard some people use rock salt, but is it hard on their feet?
Thanks! Kara

I know that mag chloride lowers the freezing temp but once it gets rained on it's pretty much gone.

We had reasonable luck just dragging the outdoor arena
to keep it rideable in winter. First we plowed the snow
off and then used the spike tooth drag (weighted) to
break up the sand and limestone into a reasonable footing.
We do use salt in our indoor; the horses are turned out
after riding and the snow rinses their hooves of salt just
fine. Never considered salting the outdoor, the snow
would just wash it all away when it melted.

Salt works, mag chloride best (least irritant to horses). But it does wash away in rain.
