I have been using a senior feed from my local feed store. They're doing fine but I have read about horses really blooming on Purina Senior so I decided to give it a try.
Two horses are fine on it but one has acted a little colicky right after eating it on two occassions. Obviously I'm not giving it to her again but wondered if anyone else has had a problem like that with it?

How did you do your switch from local brand to Equine Senior? Did you just go from one bag to the other, or gradually switch over a couple weeks? If you did an immediate switch your horses gut flora may not be ready and giving some stomach aches (eg colic)

Dumplin' always had Equine Sr. because we couldn't get TC. He did very well on it, but I was certain TC was better so we found it in Ithaca and gradually switched him over. Anyway, before we did we had been using the new formula for about 5 weeks. OMG!!! He looked AMAZING! But again, I was sure that if he looked that good on Purina he would look better on TC  WRONG! The one regret I have with Dumplin' is that I didn't go back to the Purina.
I have never had anyone tell me of problems with the new formula. I did with the old. Perhaps it is just too much for the one horse? Being a complete feed and all?

It was a gradual switch. She never made the full switch though. The first time was the first time she got 25/75, with Equine Senior being the 25%. I dropped the amount of Equine Senior then slowly brought her up to 50/50. She was okay with that amount. When I bumped her up to 75/25 she acted colicky so I thought maybe this was just not a feed that agrees with her.
I've changed feeds on her before with no issues at all. She was on a regular feed but the vet suggested putting her on a complete or senior feed. The feed store I used doesn't carry the name brands so I went with what they had and slowly switched her over with no problem.
If my other two were having a problem I would think bad bag but they're fine.

So you're saying I shouldn't give up just being really, really slow with the change? She gets about 6lbs total concentrates a day, 3lbs morning and 3lbs evening, so not a huge amount.

Oh golly, I really don't know if that is it, just a thought. I know I have had people tell me that the complete feeds were too much for their horses. So maybe this is the case?
Dumplin' was a mini with no teeth so eating a complete feed was the norm. But I remember trying Trooper on it and it wasn't his thing. He was a bit a runny and NQR so we went back to mostly hay and beet pulp for him. We were trying to get some weight on him when he first got here and Sr. feed is something that most always works!

Gotcha. Hmm. I'm not quite sure what to do. Maybe keep it 50/50 for now. She was okay with that.
Thanks for the input.
