I'm trying to find info on an older horse. The vet has aged him at somewhere between 17-25. His tattoo is very faded and hard to make out. Here is a pic of the lip tattoo.

Here it is with a bit of enhancement

And here is the horse

I'm really wanting to find out any history and a true age on this guy. I've made a few submissions to the Jocky Club but no luck so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Geez. I can see what I THINK are a 365 as the first three numbers, but I cannot make out the letter, which would tell you his age...from the enhanced photo, my (wild) guess would be, based on where the letter's ink seems to be, he is either 1987, 88, or 89. Which would make him 18-22 and either Q, R or S365**. If you can figure out where the cowlicks and any white marks that aren't age-white hairs are, that MIGHT be enough for the Jockey Club to at least narrow the field.

registry.jockeyclub.com has tips on how to make tattoos more legible.

I was guessing that the letter was an R. I tried a combination of R365** with the Jockey club and they had no matches. I reasonably sure the 3 and 6 are correct so I've resubmitted it with just those numbers still using R as the letter. I may try Q as the letter next if I don't get a hit with my last submission. He was given up when an Atlanta polo club went out of business. He is a really sweet guy that has had some nice training at some point in his life. But I know nothing else about his background.

You might want to try a black light? Supposedly they make the tattoos easier to read.

I send pics (of both horse and tattoo) to http://www.trpb.com/idres.htm for my guy and they were able to ID him.

Does he have any white on him at all? Also, take a look at his face closely and see where his cowlick(s) are placed and let us know......

The digit you think might be a 5 looks like an 8 to me.

More pictures of the tat, some focused more to the left, another more to the right, could be helpful as well. Be sure to blot the lip to reduce glare.

I'll take more pics tomorrow and see if I can get better ones focused to the right and left. I'll also get some pics of his head. He has double cowlicks on his forehead and some random white hairs but the hairs may be due to age. His only other white (besides a few scars) is the heel bulbs of his left hind ( I think, need to double check whether right or left hind). Thanks for the tips.

Try messing with the blue hues in the photo, really helped when trying to ID my guy's similarly difficult tattoo.

The white heel will definitely help narrow it down. Get as much detail as you can with the description- one bulb or both? Higher on one side? Any random white hairs on the rest of that ankle?

Also be as precise as possible with the cowlicks on his head- having a double will help eliminate possibilities as well. Is one higher than the other? Are they side by side horizontally or are they aligned vertically?

It'll be tough to know if he's always had white hairs scattered on his forehead or whether they're age-related, but its easy enough to search both ways. Description of those too, please! :)

I'm thinking the letter may be a Q instead of an R. Here are pics of his left heel bulbs and head.

I tried more shots of the tattoo but they aren't any more legible than the ones already posted.

I forgot, he also has some random white hairs on his head but I'm not sure if he was born with them or aquired them later in life. He has a scar on his head above the whorls.

The only one that comes close is:

Double diagonal cowlick above eye level, right is higher. Left hind: white on heel on inside.

Horse Name- Jack Dandie
Tattoo- R36688
Year of Birth- 1988
Dam Name- Jackie Bayou
Color - Dark Bay or Brown
Sex- Horse

But I don't know that its right. It should say "patch of hairs" for the type of marking he has in the photo on his heel. Every other one I could pull up only had single cowlicks, or more white on the heel if it had double-cowlicks. I tried it with and without the patch of white hairs on his head. There are too many results for Q and R using 3 and 6 with white on the head, and I can't narrow it down any further without coming up with non-matches......

Does he have any white on the base of his tail, or anywhere else on his body?

My 20 yr old gelding's tattoo was about that hard to read.....I took a good pic....make sure to wipe the lip off really well.

THEN I inverted the colors in photoshop. You'll find that really helps POP the numbers.

I finally found out who my guy was, but I think that was only because I'd heard his name like 10 years ago, so recognized it when the JC gave me a name.

Best of luck! It can be so frustrating, but I think you'll figure it out :D

Thanks so much. That is definitely a possiblility. He has a few white hairs on the back of his left pastern but these are probably due to age or injury. No white on the tail base or anywhere else that is not definitely from an injury. Two trainers have seen him go and they both think he moves like a younger horse. But his teeth say he is in his late teens to early 20s. I'm continuing to submit searches to the Jockey Club using different number and letter possibilities.

Thanks so much Cammie and every one else that gave me tips on reading that tattoo. I'm pretty sure he is Jack Dandie. After doing a few more searches, this is the one that fits the best. He now has a real name and is on his way to finding a forever home. :)

I hope he finds a new home soon. He looks like a lovely older gentleman. :)

Only one start, unplaced. His immediate family isn't very familiar, but he has some nice names a little further back. Bred by Rex and Kim Ellsworth in Kentucky.
