We have a 16+ hh TB mare that has been off for an injury around 5 months now, with at least 6 more to go (injury is not soundness related), and I am *thinking* about breeding her next year.

Her pluses: beautiful mare, good size and bone, excellent brain, very smart, very brave, very athletic (almost catlike), very nice jump, HUGE stride. She has foxhunted for 4 seasons, shown in the hunters and jumpers, and done x-country schooling.
What needs to be improved: she is a bit straight in the back, and only about a 7 mover.
Her pedigree: http://www.pedigreequery.com/n+y+senorita
Pictures: http://www.cherryblossomfarm.net/tresjolie.html

What I would be trying to get: show hunter! Quiet, smart, excellent mover, excellent jump, 16 hh or larger, amateur-friendly, and good trainability. She has chrome, and I prefer it.

Stallion limitations: Need a stallion built uphill. I prefer one that is approved, as I would plan on taking mare/baby to the foal inspections for approval. Prefer cooled semen, not frozen.

I still have a breeding to Silvio (Middleburg, VA) that I could use, but he is not approved, although he fits all the other requirements.

Thoughts?

First stallion that came to my mind when I saw your mare is Redwine. I think he would be a nice match. He would improve her topline. He is uphill and has nice gaits. But he is EVA+. So you have to figure if it is possible for you to do the vaccination protocole.

I would also see Sir Wanabi as a perfect match. He is known to improve topline. He scored a prefect 10 for is temperament. Almost all of his foals scored premium at their inspections. He has been bred to tb and wb mares and he seems very prepotent in passing his qualities.

Good luck on your search.

Devon- Look at Claim to Fame. We have a yearling colt and we also have an older mare by him that was bred by the stallion owner. They are very very easy, beautiful to look at, and lovely movers. Plus it is like Christmas waiting to see if you may get a pinto!

I saw 2 GOV foals by Aprio out of TB mares that were quite gorgeous in the latest issue of the GOV magazine. Both went premium and one also received a foal of distinction award (not many given out overall). Apiro seems to cross quite nicely with TB mares, has size and great jump, and has a ton of chrome. I know that Apiro generally places pretty well in the hack too.

He is at www.silvercreeksporthorses.com (http://www.silvercreeksporthorses.com)

Lotus T is approved AHHA and BWP - BWP is probably the easier registry to get a TB mare into. Oh - apparently he's also approved RPSI, though I have no personal experience with that registry.

His babies have FANTASTIC laid back tempers, great work ethics, and lots have chrome. He's also tall and throws consistently tall babies with LOVELY toplines and uphill movement. Even though he's a tall boy, he is elegant and refined, not at all heavy.

I'm also quite sold on Justice, though he doesn't have Lotus's size... He's the stallion I'm looking at for next year. My mare is a 3/4 sister to Lotus so Lotus is a little too close for comfort for me ;). Justice is VERY underused in my opinion.

Of course I second Claim to Fame - especially if you are looking for a keeper foal.

I loved our Apiro foal this year. Beautiful type, fabulous mover, good size and great brain.

I just acquired Cabalito and he would fit your bill, except for the chrome department. :) Before Cabi was availiable with fresh, Claim to Fame was up on my list and the owner is super nice to deal with.

I second Apiro- my TB mare is booked to him for 2010

Also consider Baron Van Gogh- he has lovely bloodlines on the dam and stallion side and classic jumping technique. He is currently participating in the 70 stallion test at Silver Creek, and looked fantastic in the stadium jumping! On top of that he throws fantastic temperaments ;) I am expecting a foal from him in March and could not be more excited.

Just spitting out the first two names that popped into my head for a cross with a TB: Apiro or Ironman (in no particular order). I really like what Apiro has done for the topline of the TB crosses I've seen and Ironman is a very successful breeding stallion.

Thanks everyone!

Re the Claim to Fame suggestion, I think that I would like to stick to only a 1/2 TB baby, and since he's already 3/4 TB, that would give me a 7/8th TB foal. And while *I* like the pintos, my husband prefers the more solid types, and the foal would be for him in the long run (hopefully).

I should have mentioned that I would prefer a non-gray (I already have a gray 2 yr old), as I don't mind scrubbing white socks or mostly-white pintos, but grays are SO much harder to keep clean! ;)

According to his website, Apiro will be frozen only for 2010 except for June/July, which is a lot later that I would plan on breeding.

Look at the stallion, Richard, www.theequineathlete.net.

He meets your criteria. He crosses very well with TB mares, is black with chrome, 17.0 hh, approved with BWP. He has shown not only in the hunter ring but also through Grand Prix show jumping. He has a fantastic temperment and is also passing this to his offspring. Extremely trainable, great mover, and almost anyone can ride him.

Have a look at Sir Wanabi, an approved Hanoverian stallion. He is an all round athlete and gives fancy, athletic, pretty babies. He was shown in the hunter ring by his amateur owner with success this past year. He has the size, chrome and movement.

Cabalito
I have a 2 year old Cabi filly out of a TB cross mare. Momma was built downhill and my filly is not...very strong in the hind end and balanced. Lovely mover, fab temperment, can't wait to get her butt in the hunter ring! He improved the dam in every way...movement, temperment, jump (what we have seen of it), overall looks & quality.

Cabalito does not have much chrome but my filly's dam is a plain bay with a teeny star and my girl ended up with 3 socks, a star, stripe and snip.

Cunningham
My Old NA/ISR Main Mare Book TB mare is booked to him for 2010. Love him! Oooops, he is grey though. Worth a look perhaps!

What I would be trying to get: show hunter! Quiet, smart, excellent mover, excellent jump, 16 hh or larger, amateur-friendly, and good trainability.

My Westporte filly is all of those things. Really smart, simple, and learns quickly. She's 16h now as a 2.5 year old, out of a 16h mare. She's a tremendously better mover than her dam. My friend has a 3yo by Westporte also out of a TB mare and he is very similar. Easy, ammy-friendly, excellent mover.

The only thing they don't have much of is chrome.

Also there is a new guy on the horizon, Amazing (Balou du Rouet/Votaire) who, while unproven as a sire at this point, seems to have all the goods. We are trying him this spring. You can get the introductory discount since he's new in the market before he gets popular and possibly more $. :) He is big, bay with lots of chrome (sabino) and jumps incredible, plus is a good mover and great temperament.

The Baron Van Gogh horse is interesting, recently saw new video and was intrigued. He is grey though! :)

I like Redwine and Apiro for consistency in production - the foals seem quite stamped and you have an idea of what you're going to get. We have another mare in foal to Apiro for May and are excited to see our second one out of this different mare.

Romantic Star is lovely as well though unless the mare moves well I wouldn't say you will get the be all end all hack winner, but he is strong everywhere else.

I actually quite like Cunningham as well, but crud, he's grey. :)

I would go with Apiro in a heartbeat. Barb at Silverwood is great to work with. I own the Apiro foal Albi TWF that received the "Foal of Distinction" award that Edgewood mentioned. Apiro did everything I could have hoped for in the cross with my TB mare. He put a great topline, neckset, added bone and movement. My friend is expecting a foal by him in May. I'm really looking forward to seeing that foal.

I did not even think about Amazing. He certainly fits all your requirements, although he is young and has no foals on the ground but I think he will be one to watch in coming years.

Thanks for mentioning my new stallion Galatois who as of today now has a life time breeding license with Oldenburg N/A.
The French registry is no longer active here in the US so needed a new home and I have been very happy with Oldenburg N/A for years with Alla'Czar. As you note Galatois had a super hunter career both with pro's and with amateurs. He doesn't have alot of offspring because he has been primarily a show horse, but what he does have on the ground are doing well.
Please take a look

Thank you again!

My husband likes the looks of Redwine, but unfortunately we will not be able to manage the EVA vaccination protocol (I don't have room to allow a stall in between her and other mares, unfortunately). What are your thoughts about Aloha? Since he has the same "look" as Redwine, but I'm not sure he is as uphill or will give such a nice topline.

DH also liked Aprio, but since he's frozen, that is out, and Cunningham, but oh, I so do NOT want another gray!

According to his website, Apiro will be frozen only for 2010 except for June/July, which is a lot later that I would plan on breeding.

Apiro has GREAT frozen semen with several vets that have worked with it preferring the frozen to cooled as it's sitting in the tank waiting for the appropriate time to breed.

Hope that helps!

I just checked out Sir Wanabi this evening and really like him!!

...And Cabalito can throw a lot of white! :) I have had lots of babies with 4 socks and blazes! Comes through from his sire, Cordoba.
