My foals all just got weaned. Now I usually have pretty big babies but one filly this year is well, HUGE. She came out big (with a big round butt and bulit like a brick house) and grew from there.

She is 6 months old, takes a small horse halter, stands nearly 14 hands at the butt AND she needs a 60 inch blanket. Her sire is my 17 hand Dutch stallion and her dam is a 15.1H Pinto WB(State of the Art) mare. Granted Her dam is built like a tank-she takes an 80 inch blanket but holy cow. Finally, the filly, has a full sister whom we also own. Surprise is 3.5 years old and stands an honest 16.2 and is a sturdy but elegant horse. Finally is way larger than her older sister was at this age. My stallion does not put "small" on the ground. I am thankful this filly is so easy and personable.

Even my big babies from last year wore a 60, with room to spare, for the entire winter of 08-09. There is no way she's going to make the winter in a 60. Time to buy a few more blankets.

Anyone else have those monster big foals?

My filly by Coromino is 7 months old. She's 13.2, almost 13.3 at the wither... didn't measure her butt, but it's high:lol:. Her sheet is a 60" (cut large). Her true-to-size blanket is a 64"! Yay for big babies!

And she's in a yearling halter.

Coromino is 17hh. Her TB dam is 15.2hh.

my 8 month old ES Donavan oldenburg cross filly is 14.3hh - she barely fits a 68 pony blanket and I am sure she will be in a 72 before the end of the winter.

Here she is at the royal with my son - who is 6' tall

But then again, her brother is 17.2hh - in an 86 blanket and is only 2 1/2 yrs old.

Here he is in the summer - I am 5'8"

The dam is only 16.2hh

Count me in...I posted earlier this week that my 7 month old filly had a cannon bone measurement of 18 inches....Taken and retaken several times with witnesses!! We too, breed big horses..TB's and Irish Sport Horse crosses, but jeez!! This paint filly is out of a 16.1 mare and sired by a 16.2 stud and is three weeks younger that our 3/4 TB/ISH whose parents are 16.3 and 17+ hands and the paint filly is a couple of inches taller than the ISH (who is plenty big for 7 months!!) Must be something in the air or water this year!! I just changed halters today to yearling size.

<Raises hand>
We have one filly that was a whopper when she was born this year and is now taller than two of our coming 2 year olds.
This is Roxette (http://foxhavenfarminc.com/rox2009filly.html) Keep in mind that her dam is 16 hands...

Here's the funny part with Finally. It took me two years to get her dam back in foal-hence her name Finally. AND, she was born 3 years to the day of her older sister. AND it was the longest her dam had ever held a pregnancy. Her older sister is named Surprise b/c she was born at 320 days-she held this filly for 334 days.

Well if anyone has any 62, 64, 66, 68 blankets, I am in the market for them. Her sire has get who have gotten taller than him out of small mares so one can only hope.

My two other foals for only a few weeks later and also by my dutch stallion are much smaller, good sized but much smaller-like in 48 inch blankets, which are a tad too big. Go figure.

Our foal this year is the biggest we have had to date, but I'm not sure if there are other contributing factors (for one, not a maiden mare, for a change).

Our mare base is typically around the same height/build - 16.1 or bigger and light/medium bone. This filly is quickly catching up to our 2 yearlings and it won't surprise me if she out grows them soon.

Raises hand sheepishly. Purebred TK bred to a stallion that doesn't normally throw size out of a mare that is 16 hh. He is a half brother to Tate (who is 17 hh and growing at coming 4) and I used to think all the size on Tate came from his sire but I now think the size is coming from the dam also.

Truman is the same size (half inch shorter) as my 17 month old Oskar colt (who last month stuck at 14.3 1/2 and has grown a bit since) at 6 months old (actually 6 months at the END of this month). He is about to get weaned thank goodness for his poor mom.

My filly out of Miz Yenko, by Ironman was HUGE! Jasmin 55 is a full sister to Ironrule who is now over 16.3 but she dwarfs him comparatively speaking at the same age. She is the biggest foal I have ever had. I am not sure how tall she is now as she was sold, but she sure had a large cannon bone on her. The dam is 16.1.

So far everyone has mentioned very big fillies! My filly this year is not huge- just under 14 hands at the withers at 8 months.... but my does she have a BIG butt!! She is an Appy/Trak cross so it could be the spots that make her butt seem so large.... but really I just think its round!

Could curves be coming back in style?

The only thing I'd change about our 'monster' foal this year was a colt package arrived, instead of the hoped-for filly!

Apart from that, we got a handsome, strapping colt who is going to make up into a fine middleweight and already 'born sensible'. Bred to event - by Ghareeb (TB), out of a King's Master (ISH) mare and as those two boys are noted for their placid temperaments, reckon that's where he gets his laid-back nature from.

His dam is 17 hands, which is where his height comes from and she goes back to Imperius, King of Diamonds and Ben Purple, Custom Made's maternal grand-sire. This fellow is already in a 5'3" Rhino with the next size up rug already waiting.

Have lots of pics of him if it's okay to post Photobucket links?

Here's my little dude on his 8 month birthday. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWbQ1VbY9Ew

I haven't measured him recently but I'll do it this morning. Last time I sticked him he was 14.1 at the withers and 15.0.1/4 at his rump.
