I have a young mare that I'd like to eventually breed- probably not for several more years once we've competed more. But- I'm really excited and it and I want to learn as much as I in the meantime.

Are there any good books that I could pick up to read? Either about breeding or raising foals and their first couple years?

I recommend Blessed Are the Broodmares - just don't let the book scare you off : ). It tells the good and the bad, but is a great book. I also have a book called Foal to Five Years that I really like. I am not sure who authored it off the top of my head but it is a good book.

Yep, Blessed are the Broodmares and Blessed are the Foals are good, a little outdated in some areas now, but still good info :)

And as Yankee Lawyer said, don't let all the scary stories and pictures worry you, they will most likely not happen, but they are good to know about all the same.

My favorites are The complete Book of Foaling by Dr. Karen Hayes, and Complete Foaling Manual by Teresa Jones.

As mentioned above, don't let scary pictures and stories scare you off, because most of the time everything goes smoothly. However, being educated may save the life of your mare and foals.

Those are the two that I have been recommending for years.

Ditto from me too.
