View Full Version : Western pad - short backed horse

Dec. 4, 2009, 08:09 PM
So I'm going to get a western endurance saddle for when I get back into riding in the Spring.

Since I'll have been on crutches for almost a year - I want the extra security of the western.

My "horse" is a pony with a pretty short back....like a 19" dressage saddle is a tad too long. (more a combinatino of 'shortish' back and 'longish'wither).

Assuming that the saddle maker has a bar that fits the horse, I'd like to get a pad combo where I can add some ultrathinline and that is not too thick or too    category pricewise.

I like the shorter sheepskin/thinline - but they are definitely in the    pricewise.

And I can't seem to find any just really basic shaped pads for a shorty. Anybody have any suggestions?

For a combo wool/inserts:

Toklat Woolback (you can get inserts for it):

Or use this with another pad: http://www.chicksaddlery.com/page/CDS/PROD/1030/SAB25

Google "barrel saddle pad" and you should get quite a few cheaper basic pads.

Check out pads made for Arabs, barrel racers, and some english square pads. Measure your saddle and search the internet, tack shops, and catalogs. Endurance.net has a lot of great website links and they are usually specific about size. Good Luck:D

5 Star pads will make any size wool pad you want. I had them make a shorter wool western pad for me. Personally I think its too thick to use my ultrathinline pad with it. I do however use a dixie midnight knockoff with it to keep it clean.

Bank of Dad - how thick of a 5star did you get? Maybe a 1/2" would work w/ the ultrathinline? or not?

I ride a pony too, I finally had to get Tom at Skito to make me a short pad. I got the one made for Paso's, it works with my english saddle, my western and my Yancy. I use the Dixie midnight knock off under it to keep it clean.

I believe my is a 1/2 inch. I know it wasn't the thickest.

I use my ultrathinline between my saddle and english fleece pad to reduce the concussions from his trot.
