To get something for the show ring. I would be delighted with the mare as is. She is an up on leg Irish Draught mare. Very good hunter gaits lovely jump. She is a bit to tight in the loin and she is a worrier (no spook at all but thinks too much) so I would not like to add heat to that...or sass actually as she is so powerful that is she wanted to give you attitude no one could stay on. Prefer non-grey as she is likely homozygous grey. 17.1 and about 1700 lbs...gets bigger and bigger the closer you get but she has all the proportions right for a lovely show hunter.. Thanks PatO

What breed of stallion are you looking for?? We bought a lovely big TB colt this past summer with the intent of crossing him on 1/2 TB, ISH mares that we have. In July, as a three year old, he sticked a bit over 17 hands and has grown since then. The remarkable thing about him is his bone. I haven't measured him, but he gives our Touch of the Blues ISH colt a run for the money in the bone department. I've never seen such bone on a TB....not clunky, though. He is very dark bay with one white sock behind and a pencil wide strip down his face. Considering his pedigree, he is most likely homozygous for black. I guess grey cancels that out though! The biggest plus for him is that he is a sweetheart. He stands in a center aisle stable with a half door screen and can actually hang his head over the side walls due to his size!! He turns out alone or with assorted geldings from youngsters who play with him to retirees who just tell him about the "good old days". He is a very nice "hunter type" mover as well. We are definitely using him to produce hunter type horses. Jackie

Not a proven hunter sire yet but such a fabulous jumper and small and throws small from what I hear is the Hanoverian As Di Villagana - but he is showing so most likely only frozen available.
I love Ian McVai too!
Prefer non-grey as she is likely homozygous grey.
If indeed she's GG, then all color stallions are open to you, as you *will* get gray, regardless of the stallion's color ;)

What about Vallado or Aloha? They are both around 16.1h and well tempered.

I am looking for proven hunter sires as I am already considering my untraditional(in show hunter terms anyway) Irish mare. I would love it if we had a Show Cob world like Ireland and Great Britain but we don't so I am not looking to shorten as with a Connie her but more to lighten her, maybe pretty her. I do not want a homozygous offspring from her so that is why I am not looking for greys...I know it is not science but she has melanomas...her heterzygous youngsters don't have any(so far). Thanks PatO

Aloha is at the 70 dt right now - you should check him out. Lovely stallion.
Vallado has been making his mark in the jumper ring lately, but worth checking out as well.
I'd also take a look at Shine.

Jupiter by Zues - small and refined, fabulous jumper, won everywhere in the hunters
Or what about Empire's Power - Welsh K, fabulous hunter sire of ponies but he is a very large, large.

Ditto this. I really like Aloha.
If you'd consider a full TB, Jones Hall is a proven hunter sire, about 16.1h though I do not know what he produces size wise. Lovely, lovely stallion, exudes class. I was very impressed with him when I saw him shortly after his arrival from TX.
As mentioned above, Shine & Jupiter are also not too big.

Aloha pretty.
Is there size farther back on Aloha? Would he be considered refining? Oh and thanks all. Some I had thought of myself and it is nice to confirm. Thanks PatO

I was going to suggest Jones Hall for a full TB too :)
I have no idea about any of the heights on Aloha's dam side, though his dam was 1/2 TB and 1/4 Trak. On his sire's side, his grandsire Andiamo was over 16.2h and the damsire Ritual was 16.3h.

For a full TB there is my stallion Guaranteed Gold and another one I have really liked a lot is Musing - does anyone know if there is any semen from him left at all? He was quite a refined stallion and has some lovely babies crossed with heavier mares ...
What about Noble Houston - again for a full TB sire?

I do not want a homozygous offspring from her so that is why I am not looking for greys...I know it is not science but she has melanomas...her heterzygous youngsters don't have any(so far). From the study done on grays, it was shown that Homozygous grays do have a higher incidence of melanomas than heterozygous grays do.

Absolutely second Jupiter. He is by Zeus and should give refinement. Plus he had a super record as a show hunter. He tends to sire horses around 16 hands, he would be my choice!
Zeus sired great jumpers but also wonderful hunters too!

I love Noble Houston (by Houston) - in fact I have a broodmare by Houston. But he is a big TB - my mare is big a TB - 16.3. I think there may be too much substance in those lines for what you are looking for - go for Jupiter - I believe he has quite a bit of TB and anglo arab in there.
AND he was a FABULOUS performance horse - you cant beat his record.

I would also agree that Jupiter would be a great bet. What a lovely type and jump! Perfect choice for a really big mare.
I would also consider Just the Best, and agree Jones Hall would be a great choice too.

I like KWPN stallion Wolfgang (does NOT throw size), jumper stallion but throws wonderful temperment and nice jump, AHHA Riverman (Gray stallion) or one of his progeny - usually not large horses, throws sensitive but nice temperment, or perhaps Voltaire (KWPN stallion - not sure about size but nice temperment and good jumping form).

I agree with the other posters. Empire's Power and Jupiter are great choices. Also like Shine and Jone's Hall. Ironically, all chestnuts?

Ah, gotcha - RMT is right, studies show that GG horses do have a fairly increased chance of melanomas. I thought it was just a color thing for you :)

I bred my bigger WB mare to the TB stallion A Fine Romance and it is a very nice cross. My youngster is VERY good minded and easy. AFR lightened nicely and gave me some lovely improvements in the hind end and gaits (his canter is just super!).
Some other very nice stallions have been mentioned here as well. Shine, especially, he has a super temperment and has been very successful in the hunters. What about Tish Quirk's boys Just the Best or More Than Luck?

Hey can you share any recent pictures or video? I remember him being born, and would love to see how the cross turned out.
Personally, I would breed to a TB like AFR. A RID/TB cross is a known cross IMO in that it's a known typical successful refining cross with the RID. And IMO a good minded TB is better than anything in the temperament department.
I would be really worried that no matter how "refining" a warmblood would typically be, a cross with a RID could give you something pretty random in the quality department, and could give you something pretty heavy.
I would never consider breeding my Hanoverian mare to a gorgeous local RID stallion, no matter how much I love the stallion! I could just see the offspring coming out really weird.

I'm not much of a photographer, but this is from last fall. My friend Brad who was playing photographer wasn't quite at the right angle...but it's still not a bad shot. ;) LOL!

Couldnt agree more on the thoughts that you really want to breed TB or close to it - hence why I chose Jupiter - although a wmbld by registry, Zues (his sire) was 82% Anglo-Arabian blood . As a 9-time champion of his age group, and with the earnings of his offspring totaling almost 4 million DM, in Germany alone, Zeus is known as one of the best producers of jumpers the world has ever seen. I dont know much about the dam line. . .

Someone has already suggested my stallion- Empire's Power.
Last year, he had 3 TB mares in his book for the downsize.
And also last year-- Jamie Terhune's 17.2 premium imported Danish WB conformation hunter by Andiamo had her foal by Empire's Power. The foal is stunning. Filly's name is Ankura. PHoto on my website under client owned offspring. Maybe I can get someone to post the picture for me. I let my premium membership expire because I could never get it to work. While Power can be used to upside with pony mares, he is also great for a downsize on horses.

As Di and "hunter" just do not sound right in the same sentence! lol I know a few of his babies and he doesn't throw movement, but they all can jump incredibly! In fact, I believe he didn't score high in movement upon inspection. He does sometimes throw small, As Di Athena is a good size horse as well as As Di Villagana...As Di Cinzano is small and so is an up coming 2 year old of his, As Di Absolut...

I think your best bet is going to be a nice Thoroughbred like AFR or a Trakehner. Otherwise, you won't get any lightening up. There are some nice TK's that do well in the hunters -- Impressionist I know sires nice ones.

On the Trakehner front, this is a stallion I know personally and he is gorgeous, and is siring some really nice foals. He's also got a temperament to die for.

That is interesting. As Di looks like can move very good from some of the footage I have seen

As Di can move but he's not the best and wouldn't be what I call a hunter mover, if ya know what I mean?
Here are his inspection results:
1996 bay 16.0-1/2-hand Hanoverian
Approved for: Hanoverian
Stallion Performance Test 1999, Adelheidsdorf:
Overall score 112.73/ 8th of 33
Dressage score 89.85/ 21st
Jumping score 142.67/ 1st
Winner of the Dobrock Championship 2000 for four-year-old jumping horses.
Please don't get me wrong, he's my absolute favorite and my husband took care of him for years, however I would breed for his jump over his movement any day!
