Okay, so I feel different about blanket methods in our barn.

My horse is clipped and lives in a barn. When the temperature at night is down to 50, I cotton sheet, below 50 I put heavier thick sheet with mesh lining (my favorite for most nights). Below 40 blanket, and the low 30's double blanket.

But, my barn wants to blanket heavier. I keep saying that "just because the temp. outside is 45, does not mean inside the barn, inside the stall and a horse with higher temp. and eating hay, is not the same as us".

Plus, I have a hot horse. He gets sweaty much easier than the other horses. I feel that I know him very well, but want to of course do what's best.

How do you all blanket around here?

Jeepers...up here a clipped horse would go naked if it was 50!!!

My trace clipped guy lives outside 24/7 and he's still wearing a rain sheet with no fill. Overnight temps have been at 32. He's fine.

You know your horse best.
And of course, inside a barn with multiple horses, it can get very warm.

Why does it matter to the BO/BM what kind of blanket you use?

My horse is body clipped and I am a bit farther south in Texas than the OP. I put a sheet on if it is going to get below 50. (Will probably revise this downward a bit later but she has only been clipped for a week so is pretty "naked.") Will only blanket with a medium weight blanket if it is going to get below 35 or 40. I have NEVER put more than a medium weight blanket on her, EVER. Double blanketing a horse in Texas that is in a stall at night seems like overkill.

My mare is out 24/7, which I think is a bit different than being in a stall just because she is always moving some. She doesn't grow much of a winter coat, so I don't clip her. I blanket her when it gets below 40 and is raining. If it is not wet out, I don't blanket her unless it gets down to 25-30. I usually just let it go if it will be cold for one night and save the blanketing for when there is a cold snap of several days. I do have a heavy blanket I will put on if it is 25 and wet, but otherwise I just use a no fill sheet.

I follow Inca's practice. My horse isn't clipped, but I may reconsider since she sweats easily and it is difficult to get her dry in a timely fashion in the winter.

When my horse is clipped, I'll use only a medium weight blanket. I would consider a sheet and medium weight if we experience another 2 weeks of 30-degree or less temps like last winter.
