I have a small 5 lb bag of BOSS and I don't intend to feed the birds if I can help it. :) Can I safely give a small handful to one of my horses until the bag is gone? I don't intend to continue to keep the horse on it once it's gone.

The horse is a 17 yr old OTTB with periodic bouts of gas discomfort. He's been good since his last attack in June but had had 9 bouts of gas discomfort since May of 2008. I say discomfort because I can't always say it's a full blown colic attack and he's usually fine with 7-10 cc Banamine PO and ~ 40 minutes of walk and trot on the lunge line. The horse is retired and this would just be to use up the seeds.

Needless to say I don't want to rock the apple cart with him so if I gave him about a tablespoon or 2/day, would that make any difference?

I have another guy, a 27 yr old QH that has a very loose soft stool that can go to diarrhea very easily so I won't even try it with him. :(

OK, I do realize that the seeds may come out in the manure and feed the damn sparrows after all. :( :( :(

My horses each get a cup a day. I wouldn't worry about feeding the sparrows as much as growing sunflowers on the manure pile. We get at least two or three a year.
I can't speak to whether they would be difficult for your horses to digest. None of ours have any trouble, and I would think a hanful a day would be fine.

Thanks. I'm not too worried about sunflowers sprouting as all the manure is removed from the paddocks and hauled away, but I might just keep a handful of seeds and toss in the garden! :D
